Optic Facts

Rifle scopes enable you to exactly align a rifle at different targets by lining up your eye with the target over a range. They accomplish this through magnifying the target by utilizing a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be dialed in for consideration of varied environmental things like wind speed and elevation to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand exactly where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are seeing with the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended point of impact. The majority of modern-day rifle scopes and optics have about eleven parts which are located within and externally on the optic. These parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment dials, objective focus rings, and other elements. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle glass.

The Types of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Choosing the perfect type of rifle optic is based around what type of shooting you plan to do.

First Focal Plane Glass

Focal plane scopes (FFP) include the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These kinds of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting situations where calculations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who have an idea for their aim point “hold over” as well as “lead” equations for their firearms
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and requires more visual eyesight room than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Optic Info

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) feature the reticle behind the zoom lens. This triggers the reticle to stay at the exact same scale in connection with the volume of magnification being used. The outcome is that the reticle dimensions adjust based on the magnification used to shoot over greater ranges because the reticle markings present distinct increments which can vary with the zoom. In the FFP illustration with the SFP glass, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These particular kinds of glass work for:

  • Long distance styles of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most of the shots happen within much shorter ranges and distances
  • Shooters who like a clearer optic sight picture with less room taken up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Magnification for Glass

The amount of zoom a scope supplies is determined by the diameter, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Single Power Lens Glass

A single power rifle optic will have a magnification number designator like 4×32. This implies the magnification power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of optic can not adjust since it is a fixed power scope.

Adjustable Power Lens Optic Info

Variable power rifle scopes can be changed between magnification levels. It will note the zoom level in a configuration like 2-10×32. These numbers mean the zoom of the scope can be changed in between 2x and 10x power. This additionally involves the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power shift is achieved by employing the power ring component of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

Glass Power Level and Range Correlation

Here are some suggested scope powers and the distances where they can be efficiently used. High power scopes will not be as beneficial as lower magnification optics because too much zoom can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The same concept applies to longer distances where the shooter needs to have increased power to see exactly where to properly aim the rifle.

Details on Lens Finishing

All modern-day rifle optic and scope lenses are covered in special coatings. There are different types and qualities of coatings. Lens coating can be a crucial element of a rifle’s setup when considering high-end rifle optics and scope systems. The lenses are one of the most critical pieces of the scope due to the fact that they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the point of impact. The covering on the lenses offers protection to the lens surface area as well as helps with anti glare capabilities from refracted sunrays and color discernibility.

ED Versus HD Scopes

Some scope brands also use “HD” or high-definition lens coverings which use different techniques, polarizations, elements, and chemicals to draw out various colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope manufacturers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating for Rifle Glass

Various optic lenses can even have various finishes applied to them. All lenses typically have at least some kind of treatment or finish applied to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. Since the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It is part of the carefully tuned optic. It needs to have a coating put on it so that it will be optimally functional in many types of environments, degrees of sunshine (full light VS shade), and other shooting conditions.

This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends on the scope maker and how much you paid for it.

Some scope producers also make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in building the rifle scope.

Info on Hydrophobic Finish

Water on a scope lens does not support keeping a clear sight picture through an optic in any way. Numerous top of the line and premium optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic covering. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this sort of treatment. It treats the exterior of the Steiner glass lens so the H2O particles can not bind to it or produce surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads move off of the scope to maintain a clear, water free sight picture.

Rifle Scope Installing Choices

Mounting solutions for scopes can be found in a few choices. There are the standard scope rings which are individually mounted to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also normally can be found in quick release variations which use toss levers which permit rifle shooters to rapidly install and dismount the optics.

Rifle Glass Mounting Solutions with Hex Key Rings

Standard, clamp type mounting scope rings use hex head screws to install to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on the tops of rifles. These forms of scope mounts use double separate rings to support the optic, and are normally made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum or similar materials which are designed for long distance accuracy shooting. This form of scope mount is exceptional for rifles which need a durable, unfailing mount which will not change regardless of just how much the scope is moved or jarring the rifle takes. These are the type of mounts you should have for a faithful optics setup on a far away scouting or sniper competition rifle which will hardly ever need to be modified or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can also be used on the screws to keep the hex screw threads from backing out after they are installed tightly in position. An example of these rings are the 30mm style made by Vortex Optics. The set generally costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Glass Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly detach a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Several scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a compatible design mount. These types of mounts are convenient for rifle platforms which are transported a lot, to swap out the optic from the rifle for protection, or for scopes which are used between multiple rifles.

Sealing and Gas Purging for Rifle Scope Tubes

Wetness inside your rifle scope can ruin a day of shooting and your highly-priced optic by causing fogging and creating residue inside of the scope’s tube. The majority of optics prevent wetness from entering the optical tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant. Usually, these scopes can be submerged beneath 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be plenty of humidity avoidance for basic use rifles, unless you plan on taking your rifle aboard a watercraft and are concerned about the scope still working if it goes overboard and you can still rescue the gun.

Info Around Rifle Glass Tube Gas Purging

Another part of avoiding the buildup of moisture within the rifle optic’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this area is currently taken up by the gas, the scope is less impacted by climate changes and pressure distinctions from the outdoor environment which might potentially permit water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to seek out.
