What You Need to Know About Optics

Rifle scopes allow you to specifically align a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They accomplish this through magnifying the target by utilizing a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adjusted for consideration of many natural aspects like wind speed and elevation to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand exactly where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are viewing through the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. Many modern-day rifle optics have about eleven parts which are located internally and on the exterior of the optic. These scope parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, modification dials, focus rings, and other components. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle scopes.

Rifle Glass Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Picking the best type of rifle glass depends on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Optics

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the zoom lens. These kinds of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their target “hold over” and “lead” equations for their long guns
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and uses up more visual eyesight room than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Glass Facts

Second focal plane glass (SFP) feature the reticle behind the magnifying lens. This triggers the reticle to stay at the very same size relative to the volume of magnification being used. The final result is that the reticle dimensions shift based on the magnification chosen to shoot over longer distances since the reticle measurements present distinct increments which vary with the zoom. In the FFP illustration with the SFP glass, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These particular kinds of scopes are useful for:

  • Long distance forms of shooting where shooters have additional time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most shots happen within shorter distances and ranges
  • Shooters who select a clearer optic sight picture with less room used up by the bigger FFP reticle

Magnification for Scopes

The amount of magnification a scope provides is identified by the size, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Info on Fixed Power Lens Rifle Optics

A single power rifle optic uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the magnification power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this type of optic can not adjust because it is fixed.

Variable Power Lens Scope Facts

Variable power rifle scopes use enhanced power. The power adjustment is performed using the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Power and Range Correlations

Here are some suggested scope power levels and the ranges where they may be efficiently used. Consider that high magnification scopes and optics will not be as effective as lower magnification level scopes since too much magnification can be a negative thing in certain situations. The exact same idea goes for longer ranges where the shooter needs increased power to see where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

Rifle Scope Lens Finishing

All contemporary rifle optic and scope lenses are covered. Lens covering can be a significant aspect of a rifle when looking into high end rifle optics and scope systems.

HD Versus ED Glass Lens Coatings

Some scope producers also use “HD” or high-definition lens coverings which use different techniques, chemicals, polarizations, and elements to draw out a wide range of colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” to signify the lens has extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Finishing Versus Multi-Coating for Glass

Various optic lenses can also have various finishes applied to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or covering applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. Because the lens isn’t simply a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It becomes part of the carefully tuned optic. It requires a coating to be applied to it so that the lens will be efficiently usable in many types of environments, degrees of sunlight (full light VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while reducing glare and other less helpful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends on the scope producer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope manufacturers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” covered. Being “better” depends on the manufacturer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Details on Anti-water Coating

Water on an optical lens doesn’t improve maintaining a clear sight picture through an optic whatsoever. Lots of top of the line or premium optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic finishing. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this type of treatment. It provides protection for the exterior surfaces of the Steiner scope lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or create surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads slide off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Alternatives for Installing Rifle Scopes on Long Guns

Installing solutions for scopes come in a couple of choices. There are the basic scope rings which are individually mounted to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also typically can be found in quick release variations which use throw levers which permit rifle operators to rapidly install and dismount the optics.

Hex Key Optic Ring Mounts

Standard, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two separate rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are developed for long range accuracy shooting. This type of scope install is great for rifles which need a durable, rock solid mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Scope Rings

These kinds of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly connect and detach a scope from a rifle. If they all use a similar design mount, a number of scopes can often be switched out on the range. The quick detach mount style is CNC machined from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers connect firmly to a flat top type Picatinny rail. This permits the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, taken off of the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while retaining accuracy. These kinds of mounts are useful and convenient for rifles which are transferred a lot, to remove the scope from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are used between a number of rifles. An example of this mount type is the 30mm mount designed by the Vortex Optics brand. It normally costs around $250 USD

Sealing and Gas Purging for Glass Tubes

Moisture inside your rifle optic can destroy a day of shooting and your pricey optic by bringing about fogging and developing residue inside of the scope tube. Most scopes avoid moisture from going into the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

Gas Purged Rifle Optic Tubes

Another element of preventing the buildup of moisture inside of the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this space is already occupied by the gas, the scope is less affected by temperature level changes and pressure variations from the external environment which might potentially enable water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
