What You Need to Know About Rifle Optics

Rifle scopes permit you to exactly aim a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They do this through zoom by utilizing a set of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adjusted to account for numerous natural factors like wind and elevation to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand precisely where the bullet will hit based on the sight picture you are viewing through the optic as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Many modern rifle scopes and optics have about eleven parts which are found inside and outside of the optic. These optic pieces consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment dials or turrets, objective focus rings, and other parts. Learn about the eleven parts of glass.

Rifle Scope Varieties

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Selecting the perfect type of rifle optic is based on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Glass Info

Focal plane scopes (FFP) come with the reticle in front of the magnification lens. This triggers the reticle to increase in size based on the level of magnification being used. The result is that the reticle measurements are the same at the magnified range as they are at the non amplified distance. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards with no “zoom” is still the exact same tick at 100 yards with 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes are valuable for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away kinds of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are small
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their aim point “hold over” and “lead” relationships for their long guns
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and uses up more visual sight space than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Optics

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) include the reticle behind the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick.

  • Far away styles of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most of the shots take place within shorter proximities and ranges
  • Shooters who choose a clearer optic picture with less area taken up by the larger size FFP reticle

Zoom for Rifle Scopes

The level of scope magnification you need on your scope depends on the kind of shooting you wish to do. Virtually every type of rifle glass provides some amount of magnification. The quantity of magnification a scope supplies is determined by the dimension, density, and curves of the lens glass within the rifle optic. The magnifying level of the scope is the “power” of the scope. This suggests what the shooter is aiming at through the scope is amplified times the power aspect of what can usually be seen by human eyes.

Info on Single Power Lens Rifle Optics

A single power rifle optic or scope comes with a zoom number designator like 4×32. This implies the magnification power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of optic can not adjust because it is fixed.

Info on Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Scopes

Variable power rifle scopes use variable power levels. The power change is achieved by making use of the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power and Range Correlation of Optics

Here are some suggested scope power levels and the distances where they may be successfully used. Highly magnified rifle scope glass will not be as efficient as lower powered glass because too much magnification can be a bad thing. The same concept applies to extended distances where the shooter needs sufficient power to see exactly where to properly aim the rifle.

About Lens Finishes

All modern rifle optic and scope lenses are coated. There are various types and qualities of glass lens finishings. When considering luxury rifle optics and scope setups, Lens finishing can be a crucial element of a rifle. The glass lenses are one of the most essential components of the glass given that they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the point of impact. The finish on the lenses shields the lens exterior and also improves anti glare from refracted sunlight and color profiles.

HD Versus ED Lenses

Some glass companies also use “HD” or high-definition lense coatings that take advantage of different procedures, polarizations, rare earth compounds, and components to extract a wide range of colors and viewable target definition through lenses. This high-def covering is normally used with more costly, high density lens glass which lowers light’s potential to refract through the lens glass. Some scope brands use “HD” to describe “ED” indicating extra-low dispersion glass. ED deals with how certain colors are represented on the chromatic spectrum and the chromatic difference or aberration which is similarly called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration is often noticeable around items with defined outlines as light hits the object from particular angles.

Single Finish Versus Multi-Coating for Rifle Scopes

Various optic lenses can also have different finishes used to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or coating used to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope manufacturer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope makers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are covered or “multi” coated. Being “better” depends on the manufacturer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of products used in constructing the rifle scope.

Anti-water Covering for Optics

Water on a lens does not assist with preserving a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Lots of top of the line and military grade scope companies will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic finish.

Scope Installing Options

Installing options for scopes are available in a couple of options. There are the standard scope rings which are separately mounted to the scope and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These different types of mounts also typically are made in quick release variations which use throw levers which allow rifle operators to quickly install and dismount the scopes.

Optic Mounts with Hex Key Rings

Normal, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of different rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is developed for long distance precision shooting. This type of scope install is wonderful for rifles which require a durable, rock solid mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Scope Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly take off a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Multiple scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a compatible design mount. These types of mounts are convenient for rifle platforms which are transferred a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are used between multiple rifles or are situationally focused.

Sealing and Gas Purging for Rifle Glass Tubes

Moisture inside your rifle optic can wreck a day of shooting and your pricey optic by resulting in fogging and generating residue within the scope tube. Most optics prevent wetness from getting in the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Normally, these water-resistant scopes can be submerged within 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be ample wetness prevention for common use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you anticipate taking your rifle boating and are worried about the scope still functioning if it is submerged in water and you can still recover the gun.

About Optic Tube Gas Purging

Another element of avoiding the accumulation of moisture within the rifle scope’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this space is currently taken up by the gas, the optic is less influenced by temp changes and pressure differences from the outdoor environment which might potentially enable water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to look for.
