Glass Details

Rifle scopes allow you to specifically aim a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target over a range. They accomplish this through magnifying the target by employing a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adapted for consideration of different ecological things like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand exactly where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are seeing via the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. A lot of modern rifle optics have around 11 parts which are found inside and outside of the scope body. These parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage and elevation turrets, objective focus rings, and other parts. See all eleven parts of a rifle optical system.

Rifle Scope Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Going for the optimal type of rifle scope is based on what type of shooting you plan to do.

First Focal Plane Optics

Focal plane scopes (FFP) include the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These types of scopes are helpful for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting situations where calculations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who have an idea for their target “hold over” and “lead” equations for their firearms
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and takes up more visual sight room than a SFP reticle

About Second Focal Plane Optics

Second focal plane glass (SFP) come with the reticle to the rear of the magnifying lens. This causes the reticle to remain at the very same overall size in connection with the volume of zoom being used. The outcome is that the reticle measurements shift based upon the zoom chosen to shoot over greater distances considering the markings present various increments which fluctuate with the zoom. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick. These particular sorts of glass are beneficial for:

  • Far away types of shooting where shooters have additional time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most of the shots take place within shorter ranges and distances
  • Shooters who like a clearer optic picture without space used up by the bigger FFP reticle

About Rifle Optic Zoom

The quantity of magnification a scope provides is figured out by the diameter, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Fixed Power Lens Rifle Glass

A single power rifle optic uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this kind of scope can not change considering that it is a set power scope.

Info About Variable Power Lens Rifle Glass

Variable power rifle scopes can be changed between magnification power levels. These types of scopes will note the zoom amount in a configuration like 2-10×32. These numbers mean the zoom of the scope could be adjusted in between 2x and 10x power. This always includes the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power shift is achieved by operating the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell piece.

Power Levels and Range Correlations

Here are some suggested scope powers and the ranges where they could be effectively used. Highly magnified scopes will not be as efficient as lower magnification level rifle scope glass given that too much zoom can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The exact same concept goes for longer distances where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see where to properly aim the rifle.

Rifle Optic Lens Finish

All current rifle optic and scope lenses are coated. Lens finishing is a crucial element of a shooting system when looking into high end rifle optics and scope equipment.

HD Versus ED Lenses

Some optic manufacturers will also use “HD” or high-def glass coatings that make the most of various procedures, polarizations, chemicals, and aspects to extract different colors and viewable target definition through lenses. This high-definition coating is normally used with increased density lens glass which reduces light’s ability to refract by means of the lens glass. Some scope suppliers use “HD” to describe “ED” meaning extra-low dispersion glass. ED deals with how certain colors are presented on the chromatic spectrum and the chromatic deviance or aberration which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration is often visible around items with hard edges and outlines as light hits the item from certain angles.

Single Glass Lens Covering Versus Multi-Coating

Different scope lenses can even have different coatings applied to them. All lenses usually have at least some type of treatment or coating applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. This is since the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass. It becomes part of the finely tuned optic. It must have a finishing placed on it so that the lens will be efficiently functional in lots of kinds of environments, degrees of sunshine (full VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is generally a protective and enhancing multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can shield the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less advantageous things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single covered lens depends upon the scope company and how much you spent on it. Both the manufacturer and amount are signs of the lens quality.

Some scope makers also make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” covered. This indicates the lens has had multiple treatments applied to the surfaces. If a lens receives several treatments, it can show that a company is taking multiple actions to combat various environmental elements like an anti-glare finish, a scratch resistant anti-abrasion finishing, followed by a hydrophilic finishing. This additionally doesn’t always mean the multi-coated lens is better than a single layered lens. Being “better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment solutions and the quality of glass used in developing the rifle glass.

Details on Hydrophobic Finish

Water on an optic’s lens does not support retaining a clear sight picture through an optic in any way. Lots of top of the line and high-end optic producers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic coating. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this type of treatment. It provides protection for the exterior of the Steiner scope lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or develop surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads roll off of the scope to maintain a clear, water free sight picture.

Glass Installation Alternatives

Mounting solutions for scopes can be found in a few options. There are the standard scope rings which are separately installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different types of mounts also generally can be found in quick release variations which use toss levers which permit rifle operators to quickly install and dismount the scopes.

Rifle Glass Mounting Solutions with Hex Key Rings

Basic, clamp design mounting optic rings use hex head screws to install to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These styles of scope mounts use double individual rings to support the scope, and are normally made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are made for long distance accuracy shooting. This kind of scope mount is very good for rifle systems which require a resilient, rock solid mount which will not move regardless of how much the scope is moved about or jarring the rifle takes. These are the style of mounts you should have for a devoted scope setup on a far away hunting or hard target interdiction long gun which will almost never need to be altered or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can also be used on the mount’s screws to keep the hex screws from wiggling out after they are mounted safely in position. An example of these rings are the 30mm type made by the Vortex Optics brand. The set typically costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Glass Ring Mounts

These kinds of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly attach and remove a scope from a rifle. Several scopes can also be switched out if they all use a similar style mount. The quick detach design is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers fasten tightly to a flat top type Picatinny rail. This allows the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, taken off of the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while preserving precision. These types of mounts are useful and beneficial for rifles which are transferred between vehicles a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for aiming systems which are adopted between multiple rifles. An example of this mount style is the 30mm mount from Vortex Optics. It normally costs around $250 USD

What to Know About Rifle Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle optic can destroy a day of shooting and your pricey optic by triggering fogging and developing residue inside of the scope tube. Most scopes prevent moisture from going into the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof.

Gas Purged Rifle Scope Tubes

Another element of preventing the buildup of wetness within the rifle optic’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Considering that this space is currently taken up by the gas, the scope is less affected by temp alterations and pressure distinctions from the external environment which may potentially allow water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to look for.
