Rifle Glass Info

Rifle scopes allow you to exactly aim a rifle at different targets by lining up your eye with the target at range. They do this through zoom by employing a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted to take into account numerous natural aspects like wind and elevation increases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to help the shooter understand precisely where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are seeing using the optic as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. Most modern-day rifle scopes have around 11 parts which are located inside and on the exterior of the optic. These scope parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment turrets or dials, objective focus rings, and other components. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle glass.

Rifle Glass Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Deciding on the optimal type of rifle scope is based on what type of shooting you plan to do.

Info on First Focal Plane Glass

First focal plane scopes (FFP) come with the reticle before the zoom lens. This induces the reticle to increase in size based on the amount of zoom being used. The result is that the reticle measurements are the same at the amplified range as they are at the non amplified range. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at 100 yards with no “zoom” is still the same tick at one hundred yards by using 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes are valuable for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where calculations are low
  • Experienced shooters who understand their aim point “hold over” plus “lead” ratios for their weapon
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is enlarged and occupies more visual sight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Glass

Second focal plane optics (SFP) come with the reticle behind the zoom lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement.

  • Far away styles of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most of the shots occur within shorter ranges and spaces
  • Shooters who want a clearer optic sight picture without area used up by the enlarged FFP reticle

Magnification for Rifle Optics

The amount of magnification a scope offers is determined by the diameter, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Single Power Lens Rifle Glass Info

A single power rifle scope will have a magnification number designator like 4×32. This indicates the magnification power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of scope can not change considering that it is set from the factory.

Info on Variable Power Lens Glass

Variable power rifle scopes have adjustable power. It will list the zoom degree in a format like 2-10×32. These numbers imply the zoom of the scope could be changed between 2x and 10x power. This also incorporates the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power manipulation is achieved by operating the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell piece.

Power and Range Correlations

Here are some advised scope power settings and the ranges where they may be successfully used. Consider that higher power scopes will not be as practical as lower magnification level optics and scopes because too much zoom can be a negative thing in certain situations. The very same idea goes for extended distances where the shooter needs increased power to see where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

Details on Rifle Optic Lens Finishing

All contemporary rifle optic and scope lenses are covered in special coatings. There are different types and qualities of finishings. When looking at luxury rifle optical units, Lens finish can be a critical component of a rifle. The glass lenses are among the most key components of the optic given that they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the point of impact. The finish on the lenses protects the lens exterior and even helps with anti glare from refracted natural light and color visibility.

About Rifle Optic Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some rifle scope producers also use “HD” or high-definition glass coverings which make the most of various processes, elements, polarizations, and chemicals to enhance a wide range of color ranges and viewable target visibility through lenses. This high-def finishing is frequently used with more costly, high density lens glass which reduces light’s chance to refract through the lens glass. Some scope corporations use “HD” to describe “ED” suggesting extra-low dispersion glass. ED handles how certain colors are represented on the chroma spectrum and the chromatic aberration which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration is often noticeable around objects with hard outlines as light hits the item from specific angles.

Rifle Scope Lens Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating

Various scope lenses can also have various finishings applied to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or finishing applied to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. Because the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It becomes part of the finely tuned optic. It needs to have a coating put on it so that the lens will be efficiently functional in numerous kinds of environments, degrees of sunlight (full light VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

Single coated lenses have a treatment applied to them which is generally a protective and enhancing multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can shield the lens from scratches while reducing glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends upon the scope company and just how much you spent paying for it. Both the manufacturer and amount are indications of the lens quality.

Some scope producers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. Being “better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Finishing for Glass

Water on a scope’s lens doesn’t help with maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope whatsoever. Numerous top of the line or high-end scope makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic finish. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this kind of treatment. It provides protection for the exterior of the Steiner glass lens so the water particles can not bind to it or create surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads slide off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Rifle Glass Installation Options

Installing approaches for scopes come in a few choices. There are the standard scope rings which are individually mounted to the scope and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various kinds of mounts also usually come in quick release versions which use manual levers which enable rifle shooters to rapidly mount and dismount the glass.

Hex Key Rifle Optic Ring Mounts

Normal, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two different rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for long distance precision shooting. This type of scope install is great for rifles which require a long lasting, sound mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abused.

Rifle Optic Mounting Solutions with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These kinds of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly detach a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. If they all use a comparable design mount, several scopes can also be swapped out in the field. The quick detach mount style is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers connect solidly to a flat top type Picatinny rail. This allows the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted while preserving precision. These types of mounts come in handy for rifles which are moved a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for sight systems which are used between several rifles. An example of this mount style is the 30mm mount designed by Vortex Optics. It normally costs around $250 USD

Scope Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle optic can destroy a day of shooting and your costly optic by bringing about fogging and producing residue inside of the scope tube. Many scopes prevent moisture from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

Gas Purged Glass Tubes

Another element of preventing the accumulation of moisture within the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this space is currently taken up by the gas, the scope is less influenced by temperature shifts and pressure variations from the outside environment which may potentially allow water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
