Rifle Optic Info

Rifle scopes allow you to exactly align a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They accomplish this through magnifying the target by using a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adjusted to take into account separate environmental considerations like wind and elevation increases or decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand exactly where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are viewing via the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. A lot of modern-day rifle scopes have around eleven parts which are found within and externally on the scope body. These optic pieces include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage and elevation turrets or dials, focus rings, and other parts. Learn about the eleven parts of glass.

About Scope Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Going for the perfect type of rifle scope is based around what type of shooting you plan to do.

About First Focal Plane Glass

First focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle ahead of the magnifying lens. This causes the reticle to increase in size based on the amount of zoom being used. The outcome is that the reticle measurements are the same at the magnified distance as they are at the non magnified range. For example, one tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards without any “zoom” is still the exact same tick at 100 yards using 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes are valuable for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where computations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who know their aim point “hold over” plus “lead” correlations for their long guns
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and uses up more visual eyesight room than a SFP reticle

Info on Second Focal Plane Glass

Second focal plane optics (SFP) include the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement.

  • Long distance forms of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most shots take place within much shorter ranges and spaces
  • Shooters who like a clearer optic picture without area used up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Rifle Optic Magnification

The level of scope zoom you need on your optic is based on the kind of shooting you want to do. Pretty much every style of rifle glass delivers some amount of magnification. The quantity of magnification a scope gives is determined by the size, density, and curvatures of the lenses within the rifle scope. The magnification level of the optic is the “power” of the glass. This denotes what the shooter is checking out through the scope is magnified times the power factor of what can generally be seen by human eyes.

Fixed Power Lens Scope Facts

A single power rifle scope or optic will have a magnification number designator like 4×32. This indicates the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of scope can not fluctuate because it is a set power scope.

Info on Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Glass

Variable power rifle scopes have adjustable power. It will note the magnification amount in a format like 2-10×32. These numbers mean the magnification of the scope could be changed in between 2x and 10x power. This additionally involves the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power shift is accomplished by employing the power ring component of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell piece.

Power Levels and Range

Here are some suggested scope power settings and the distances where they could be efficiently used. Always remember that high power glass will not be as practical as lower magnification level scopes due to the fact that increased zoom can be a bad thing. The same applies to extended distances where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see where to properly aim the rifle.

Details on Scope Lens Finish

All current rifle glass lenses are layered. Lens covering can be a crucial aspect of a rifle when buying high end rifle optics and scope equipment.

HD Versus ED Lenses

Some scope makers also use “HD” or high-definition lens coverings which use various techniques, chemicals, polarizations, and components to draw out a wide range of colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope producers use “HD” to refer to “ED” to signify the lens has extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Finish Versus Multi-Coating for Rifle Optics

Various optic lenses can also have various coverings used to them. All lenses normally have at least some type of treatment or coating applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can offer protection to the lens from scratches while decreasing glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single covered lens depends on the scope manufacturer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope makers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. Being “better” depends on the manufacturer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Rifle Optic Lens Anti-water Covering

Water on a lens does not improve maintaining a clear sight picture through an optic at all. Many top of the line and premium scope producers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic coating. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this sort of treatment. It treats the surface of the Steiner scope lens so the H2O molecules can not bind to it or create surface tension. The result is that the water beads move off of the scope to maintain a clear, water free sight picture.

Glass Installation Choices

Mounting options for scopes come in a couple of choices. There are the standard scope rings which are individually installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also typically come in quick release variations which use toss levers which allow rifle operators to quickly mount and remove the scopes.

Rifle Glass Mounts with Hex Key Rings

Standard, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on the tops of rifles. These varieties of scope mounts use two individual rings to support the optic, and are normally constructed from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are developed for far away accuracy shooting. This form of scope mount is great for rifles which need to have a durable, rock solid mount which will not shift despite how much the scope is moved about or jarring the rifle takes. These are the style of mounts you should get for a devoted optics setup on a long distance scouting or hard target interdiction firearm that will seldom need to be changed or recalibrated. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can also be used on the mount screws to stop the hex screws from wiggling out after they are mounted firmly in position. An example of these rings are the 30mm style made by the Vortex Optics brand. The set typically costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Glass Ring Mounting Solutions

These kinds of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly take off a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. Several scopes can also be switched out if they all use a similar designed mount. The quick detach mount style is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers connect securely to a flat top style Picatinny rail. This permits the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted while preserving the original sighting settings. These kinds of mounts are useful and convenient for rifles which are moved a lot, to take off the scope from the rifle for protection, or for scopes which are used in between several rifles. An example of this mount style is the 30mm mount designed by the Vortex Optics brand. It typically costs around $250 USD

Rifle Optic Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle optic can mess up a day of shooting and your costly optic by bringing about fogging and producing residue inside of the scope tube. The majority of scopes avoid wetness from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

What to Know About Scope Tube Gas Purging

Another part of avoiding the accumulation of moisture inside of the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this area is already occupied by the gas, the scope is less impacted by climate alterations and pressure distinctions from the external environment which could potentially permit water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
