Info Scopes

Rifle scopes allow you to exactly align a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They do this through magnifying the target by making use of a set of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adapted to account for various ecological things like wind and elevation to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand precisely where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are viewing through the optic as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. The majority of modern-day rifle optics have about eleven parts which are located within and externally on the scope. These optic pieces include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage turrets or dials, focus rings, and other parts. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle scopes.

Rifle Glass Varieties

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Deciding on the finest type of rifle glass depends on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Optics

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the zoom lens. This causes the reticle to increase in size based on the amount of zoom being used. The result is that the reticle measurements are the same at the enhanced range as they are at the non magnified range. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at 100 yards with no “zoom” is still the exact same tick at one hundred yards with 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes work for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away types of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where computations are minimal
  • Experienced shooters who know their aim point “hold over” plus “lead” equations for their firearm
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and uses up more visual eyesight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scope Details

Second focal plane glass (SFP) feature the reticle behind the magnifying lens. This induces the reticle to remain at the same dimensions relative to the quantity of zoom being used. The result is that the reticle measurements evolve based upon the zoom chosen to shoot over lengthier distances due to the fact that the markings present various increments which differ with the magnification level. In the FFP illustration with the SFP glass, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These particular kinds of optics work for:

  • Far away kinds of shooting where shooters have extra time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most of the shots happen within shorter ranges and spaces
  • Shooters who prefer a clearer optic sight picture with less room used up by the enlarged FFP reticle

Glass Zoom

The amount of zoom a scope supplies is determined by the diameter, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Fixed Single Power Lens Rifle Optic Info

A single power rifle scope will have a magnification number designator like 4×32. This implies the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this kind of optic can not fluctuate because it is a set power scope.

Variable Power Lens Glass

Variable power rifle scopes can be tweaked between magnified settings. The power change is performed by the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

Optic Power and Ranges

Here are some advised scope power levels and the ranges where they can be efficiently used. High power rifle scope glass will not be as efficient as lower powered glass since too much magnification can be a bad thing. The same goes for extended ranges where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Optic Lens Finish

All modern-day rifle scope and optic lenses are coated. There are various types and qualities of glass coverings. When looking at high end rifle optical devices, Lens coating can be a critical component of defining the capability of the rifle. The glass lenses are one of the most essential parts of the scope considering they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the point of impact. The finishing on the lenses shields the lens surface and even helps with anti glare from excess direct sunlight and color visibility.

HD Versus ED Lenses

Some scope producers also use “HD” or high-definition lens coatings which use different processes, components, chemicals, and polarizations to draw out separate colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope manufacturers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating for Rifle Scopes

Different optic lenses can also have different coverings applied to them. All lenses generally have at least some type of treatment or coating used to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single covered lens depends on the scope manufacturer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope producers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the manufacturer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of materials used in developing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Lens Finishing

Water on an optic’s lens does not improve retaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Many top of the line or premium scope manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this type of treatment. It deals with the exterior surfaces of the Steiner scope lens so the H2O molecules can not bind to it or develop surface tension. The result is that the water beads roll off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Alternatives for Installing Rifle Glass on Firearms

Installing options for scopes are available in a few choices. There are the basic scope rings which are individually mounted to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different kinds of mounts also usually come in quick release variations which use toss levers which permit rifle operators to rapidly mount and remove the scope.

Optic Mounting Solutions with Hex Key Rings

Standard, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to install to the flattop style Picatinny scope mounting rails on rifles. These styles of scope mounts use double independent rings to support the scope, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are made for long distance accuracy shooting. This type of scope mount is excellent for rifles which need to have a long lasting, rock solid mount which will not move regardless of just how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes. These are the style of mounts you really want to have for a dedicated scope system on a long distance hunting or competition rifle which will hardly ever need to be changed or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can also be used on the mount’s screws to prevent the hex screws from backing out after they are installed securely in position. An example of these rings are the 30mm style from Vortex Optics. The set generally costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Optic Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly detach a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Several scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a similar design mount. These types of mounts are convenient for long guns which are transported a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protecting the scope, or for optics which are used between several rifles.

Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Wetness inside your rifle scope can mess up a day of shooting and your costly optic by causing fogging and creating residue inside of the scope tube. Most scopes avoid wetness from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof.

Rifle Scope Gas Purging

Another part of avoiding the accumulation of moisture inside of the rifle optic’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this space is already occupied by the gas, the scope is less altered by temp alterations and pressure differences from the outdoor environment which may potentially enable water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
