What You Need to Know About Glass

Rifle scopes allow you to exactly aim a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They do this through magnifying the target using a set of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s alignment can be dialed in to account for varied natural aspects like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand precisely where the bullet will hit based on the sight picture you are viewing via the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended point of impact. Most modern rifle scopes and optics have about 11 parts which are found internally and outside of the scope body. These parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage turrets or dials, objective focus rings, and other elements. See all eleven parts of a rifle optical system.

About Glass Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Selecting the best type of rifle optic depends on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Scope Details

Focal plane scopes (FFP) include the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These styles of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are minor
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their target “hold over” as well as “lead” equations for their firearms
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and requires more visual eyesight space than a SFP reticle

About Second Focal Plane Scopes

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) include the reticle behind the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement.

  • Far away forms of shooting where shooters have extra time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most shots occur within shorter ranges and spaces
  • Shooters who want a clearer optic picture with less area used up by the bigger FFP reticle

Ins and Outs of Optic Zoom

The quantity of zoom a scope supplies is figured out by the size, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Info About Single Power Lens Rifle Glass

A single power rifle optic and scope uses a magnification number designator like 4×32. This means the zoom power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of scope can not change since it is a fixed power scope.

Variable Power Lens Glass Facts

Variable power rifle scopes can be tweaked between magnified settings. The power adjustment is handled using the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Power and Range

Here are some advised scope powers and the distances where they can be successfully used. Bear in mind that higher power scopes and optics will not be as practical as lower powered optics and scopes since excessive magnification can be a detractor. The same concept applies to extended ranges where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see where to best aim the rifle.

Optic Lens Finishing

All present day rifle optic and scope lenses are layered. Lens covering is an important element of a rifle when thinking about high end rifle optics and scope setups.

HD Versus ED Lenses

Some scope manufacturers also use “HD” or high-definition lens finishes which use various procedures, aspects, polarizations, and chemicals to draw out different colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” to signify the lens has extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can also have different finishings applied to them. All lenses usually have at least some type of treatment or covering used to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is generally a protective and improving multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can preserve the lens from scratches while decreasing glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single covered lens depends upon the scope company and the amount you spent paying for it. Both are signs of the lens quality.

Some scope producers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Anti-water Rifle Scope Lens Finish

Water on a lens does not help with keeping a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Many top of the line and high-end optic companies will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic covering.

Rifle Glass Installation Options

Installing options for scopes come in a few choices. There are the basic scope rings which are separately installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also usually are made in quick release versions which use manual levers which allow rifle operators to quickly mount and remove the scope.

Optic Mounting Solutions with Hex Key Rings

Basic, clamp-on style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to position to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on the tops of rifles. These kinds of scope mounts use double separate rings to support the scope, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are manufactured for long distance precision shooting. This kind of scope mount is ideal for rifle systems which are in need of a durable, hard use mount which will not change no matter just how much the scope is moved about or jarring the rifle takes. These are the type of mounts you should have for a specialized optics setup on a long distance scouting or interdiction rifle which will almost never need to be changed or recalibrated. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can additionally be used on the scope mount’s screws to keep the hex screw threads from backing out after they are installed securely in place. An example of these rings are the 30mm type made by Vortex Optics. The set generally costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Glass Ring Mounts

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly connect and detach a scope from a rifle before reattaching it to a different rifle. Multiple scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a compatible design mount. These types of mounts are convenient for long guns which are carried a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are used between multiple rifles.

What to Know About Rifle Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle optic can ruin a day of shooting and your pricey optic by bringing about fogging and developing residue inside of the scope tube. A lot of scopes prevent moisture from going into the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

About Scope Tube Gas Purging

Another component of preventing the buildup of wetness inside of the rifle scope’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Considering that this area is currently taken up by the gas, the glass is less impacted by temperature level shifts and pressure distinctions from the external environment which might potentially allow water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to look for.
