Information Glass

Rifle scopes enable you to specifically align a rifle at different targets by lining up your eye with the target over a distance. They do this through magnifying the target by making use of a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s alignment can be dialed in to account for different natural considerations like wind and elevation to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand exactly where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are viewing via the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Most modern rifle scopes have about eleven parts which are found inside and on the exterior of the scope. These scope parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage and elevation turrets or dials, objective focus rings, and other elements. See all eleven parts of optics.

About Scope Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. The type of focal plane an optic has determines where the reticle or crosshair lies in regard to the scopes zoom. It literally suggests the reticle is located behind or in front of the magnification lens of the scope. Picking out the best type of rifle glass is based on what variety of hunting or shooting you intend on doing.

About First Focal Plane Glass

First focal plane glass (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the magnification lens. This triggers the reticle to increase in size based on the amount of magnification being used. The outcome is that the reticle measurements are the same at the amplified range as they are at the non magnified range. As an example, one tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards without having “zoom” is still the very same tick at 100 yards using 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes are practical for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where calculations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who know their target “hold over” and also “lead” equations for their rifles
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and requires more visual eyesight space than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scope Facts

Second focal plane optics (SFP) include the reticle behind the zoom lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement.

  • Long distance forms of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most shots happen within much shorter ranges and proximities
  • Shooters who want a clearer optic sight picture with less space used up by the larger sized FFP reticle

About Optic Magnification

The amount of magnification a scope offers is determined by the size, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Single Power Lens Optic Info

A single power rifle scope uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This indicates the zoom power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of scope can not change since it is a set power scope.

About Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Scopes

Variable power rifle scopes have adjustable power. These types of scopes will list the magnification degree in a configuration like 2-10×32. These numbers suggest the magnification of the scope can be adjusted in between 2x and 10x power. This additionally utilizes the powers in-between 2 and 10. The power modification is achieved by employing the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell piece.

Rifle Optic Power and Range Correlation

Here are some suggested scope power settings and the distances where they may be effectively used. Highly magnified rifle scope glass will not be as effective as lower powered glass due to the fact that too much zoom can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The same concept relates to extended distances where the shooter needs to have enough power to see exactly where to best aim the rifle.

Lens Coating for Scopes

All modern rifle scope lenses are covered in special coatings. There are different types and qualities of lens finishes. Lens finish is a crucial element of a rifle’s setup when contemplating high end rifle optics and scope units. The lenses are one of the most significant components of the glass since they are what your eye sees through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The covering on the lenses shields the lens surface area and assists with anti glare capabilities from excess daylight and color exposure.

Info on Rifle Glass Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some rifle scope makers even use “HD” or high-definition lense finishes which apply different processes, polarizations, chemicals, and elements to enhance a wide range of colors and viewable target definition through lenses. This HD finishing is normally used with greater density glass which lowers light’s capability to refract through the lens glass. Some scope vendors use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass. ED handles how colors are represented on the chroma spectrum and the chromatic aberration or deviance which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration can be visible around objects with defined outlines as light hits the item from various angles.

Single Finishing Versus Multi-Coating

Various optic lenses can also have various coverings used to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or finish used to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can offer protection to the lens from scratches while reducing glare and other less advantageous things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single covered lens depends on the scope manufacturer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope producers also make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are covered or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

What to Know About Hydrophobic Finish

Water on a scope lens does not improve maintaining a clear sight picture through an optic in any way. Numerous top of the line or premium scope producers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic covering. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this sort of treatment. It provides protection for the surface area of the Steiner glass lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or develop surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads move off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Glass Installation Alternatives

Mounting options for scopes are available in a couple of choices. There are the standard scope rings which are individually installed to the optic and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These different types of mounts also typically can be found in quick release versions which use manual levers which allow rifle shooters to quickly mount and remove the scopes.

Hex Key Rifle Glass Rings

Standard, clamp type mounting optic rings use hex head screws to install to the flattop style Picatinny scope mounting rails on the tops of rifles. These kinds of scope mounts use two detached rings to support the scope, and are normally made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum or similar materials which are made for far away accuracy shooting. This form of scope mount is exceptional for rifles which require a resilient, hard use mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved about or abuse the rifle takes. These are the type of mounts you really want to have for a dedicated scope system on a long distance scouting or competitors rifle that will almost never need to be altered or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can additionally be used on the scope mount’s screws to keep the hex screw threads from wiggling out after they are mounted firmly in place. An example of these mounting rings are the 30mm style from the Vortex Optics brand. The set generally costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Glass Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly take off a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Multiple scopes can also be switched out if they all use a similar style mount. These types of mounts are handy for rifle platforms which are transported a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for scopes which are used between numerous rifles or are situationally focused.

What to Know About Rifle Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle glass can mess up a day of shooting and your costly optic by triggering fogging and developing residue inside of the scope’s tube. Most optics prevent moisture from getting in the optical tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Generally, these water resistant scopes can be immersed under 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can force moisture past the O-rings. This should be ample moisture prevention for standard use rifles, unless you anticipate taking your rifle on a boat and are concerned about the scope still performing if it goes over the side and you can still salvage the rifle.

What to Know About Optic Tube Gas Purging

Another component of preventing the accumulation of wetness inside of the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this area is already taken up by the gas, the scope is less influenced by condition changes and pressure distinctions from the outside environment which might possibly allow water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to seek out.
