Scope Information

Rifle scopes permit you to precisely align a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target over a distance. They do this through magnification by using a set of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted for the consideration of various natural aspects like wind and elevation decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to help shooters understand precisely where the bullet will land based upon the sight picture you are viewing via the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. A lot of modern-day rifle scopes and optics have around 11 parts which are arranged inside and outside of the scope. These scope parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, elevation dials, focus rings, and other parts. See all eleven parts of an optic.

Rifle Glass Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Choosing the finest type of rifle glass is based around what type of shooting you plan to do.

First Focal Plane Optics

First focal plane glass (FFP) feature the reticle before the zoom lens. This causes the reticle to increase in size based on the level of magnification being used. The benefit is that the reticle measurements are the same at the enhanced distance as they are at the non magnified distance. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at 100 yards without “zoom” is still the very same tick at 100 yards by using 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes work for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where calculations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who have an idea for their aim point “hold over” as well as “lead” correlations for their firearm
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is enlarged and requires more visual eyesight space than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Glass Details

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) feature the reticle to the rear of the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick.

  • Long distance forms of shooting where shooters have more time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most of the shots occur within shorter proximities and ranges
  • Shooters who would like a clearer optic sight picture without space used up by the larger size FFP reticle

Details on Rifle Glass Zoom

The quantity of scope magnification you need on your glass depends on the kind of shooting you desire to do. Almost every kind of rifle scope gives some degree of magnification. The level of zoom a scope gives is identified by the dimension, thickness, and curvatures of the lens glass inside of the rifle optic. The magnification of the optic is the “power” of the opic. This implies what the shooter is aiming at through the scope is amplified times the power factor of what can usually be seen by human eyes.

Fixed Power Lens Scopes

A single power rifle optic will have a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this kind of optic can not adjust considering that it is a set power scope.

Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Glass Facts

Variable power rifle scopes can be changed between magnification increments. These types of scopes will list the zoom amount in a format like 2-10×32. These numbers indicate the magnification of the scope could be changed between 2x and 10x power. This additionally involves the powers in-between 2 and 10. The power modification is accomplished by making use of the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell piece.

Optic Power and Range Correlation

Here are some recommended scope power levels and the ranges where they could be successfully used. High power glass will not be as beneficial as lower magnification level scopes since too much magnification can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The exact same idea goes for extended ranges where the shooter needs enough power to see where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

Details on Lens Coatings

All present day rifle optic lenses are coated. Lens coating can be an important element of a rifle system when looking at high end rifle optics and scope systems.

Info on Rifle Scope Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope manufacturers also use “HD” or high-definition lens coverings which use various techniques, chemicals, polarizations, and components to draw out separate colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” meaning extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Optic Lens Finish Versus Multi-Coating

Various optic lenses can also have various finishes applied to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or finish used to them before they are used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is usually a protective and improving multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can shield the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope manufacturer and the amount you paid for it. The scope’s maker and cost are signs of the lens quality.

Some scope makers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. Being “better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in building the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Coating for Optics

Water on a lens does not assist with maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Numerous top of the line and high-end optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating.

Scope Installation Choices

Mounting options for scopes are available in a few options. There are the basic scope rings which are separately installed to the optic and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These different kinds of mounts also typically are made in quick release variations which use toss levers which allow rifle shooters to rapidly mount and remove the scope.

Hex Key Glass Ring Mounting Solutions

Standard, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two separate rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is designed for long range accuracy shooting. This type of scope install is wonderful for rifles which need a durable, sound mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abused.

Glass Mounts with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly detach a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. Multiple scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a complementary designed mount. The quick detach design is CNC machined from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers fasten solidly to a flat top design Picatinny rail. This enables the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while maintaining accuracy. These types of mounts are useful and handy for shooting platforms which are shipped a lot, to take off the scope from the rifle for protection, or for sight systems which are adopted between several rifles. An example of this mount type is the 30mm mount designed by the Vortex Optics brand. It normally costs around $250 USD

Sealing and Gas Purging for Rifle Optic Tubes

Wetness inside your rifle scope can mess up a day of shooting and your expensive optic by triggering fogging and developing residue inside of the scope tube. A lot of scopes prevent wetness from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

Gas Purged Rifle Scope Tubes

Another part of preventing the buildup of moisture inside of the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Considering that this area is already taken up by the gas, the optic is less influenced by temperature level shifts and pressure differences from the external environment which could possibly enable water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
