About this item
A subset of the Viper HS line, the Viper HS LR (Hunting & Shooting Long Range) 6-24×50 First Focal Plane scope is perfect for when you need to extend your shooting range and bullet drop and wind drift compensation are crucial.
The XLR Reticle is a hashmarked MOA-based long range reticle with wind drift dots and 1 MOA wind reference subtensions. Good for long range shooters dialing for bullet drop or holding drop while using the reticle.
In the advanced optical system, the XD glass renders an image that is sharp and clear from edge to edge. There are XR multi-coated lenses allowing you to capture the most light from dawn til dusk. The 4x zoom range will pull you close to your target.
The HS LR offers exposed target-style elevation turrets for dialing elevation at extended ranges. The CRS Zero Stop allows you to get back to referencing zero even after coming up several revolutions on the turret.Field of View:17.8-5.1 ft/100 yds
Ultra-hard, scratch resistant Armortek coatings protect the exterior lenses of the scope. Argon purging provides fogproof and waterproof performance. The hard-anodized matte black finish is extremely durable and looks awesome too.
Viper HS LR 6-24X50 XLR (MOA) Riflescope (VHS-4315-LR)
Want to extend your effective shooting range at distances where bullet drop and wind drift become critical Take a look at the Viper HS LR riflescope. The LR stands for long range ” and we mean it. This riflescope features an exposed target-style elevation turret built for dialing elevation at extended ranges. The capped windage turret maintains the scope’s sleek lines and prevent it from hanging up on clothing, rifle cases or pack scabbards.
Viper HS LR riflescopes feature an advanced optical system highlighted with a 4x zoom range for magnification versatility. A forgiving eye box with increased eye relief gets shooters on target quickly and easily. Built on an ultra-strong 30mm one-piece machined aluminum tube for increased windage and elevation travel and optimal adjustment.

XLR MOA Reticle
Hashmarked MOA-based long range reticle with wind drift dots and 1 MOA wind reference subtensions. Good for long range shooters dialing for bullet drop or holding drop while using the reticle.
First focal plane (FFP) reticles are located near the windage and elevation turrets in front of the image-erecting and magnifying lenses. This style of reticle will visually grow and shrink as you change the magnification. The main advantage of an FFP reticle is that the reticle subtensions used for ranging, holdovers, and wind drift corrections are consistent at all magnifications. The reticle is heavier at higher magnifications and finer at lower magnifications.
Fast focus eyepiece allows quick and easy reticle focusing.

All About Rifle Optics

Rifle scopes permit you to exactly align a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target at range. They do this through magnifying the target using a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be dialed in to account for numerous environmental considerations like wind speed and elevation decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand exactly where the bullet will hit based on the sight picture you are viewing through the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. Most modern-day rifle optics have about eleven parts which are found within and outside of the scope body. These optic pieces consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, modification dials, objective focus rings, and other components. Learn about the eleven parts of optics.

Rifle Optic Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Considering the finest type of rifle optic is based on what type of shooting you plan to do.

Info on First Focal Plane Optics

First focal plane glass (FFP) include the reticle in front of the zoom lens. This causes the reticle to increase in size based on the amount of zoom being used. The benefit is that the reticle measurements are the same at the amplified distance as they are at the non magnified range. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards without “zoom” is still the same tick at one hundred yards by using 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away kinds of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are minimal
  • Experienced shooters who know their aim point “hold over” and also “lead” equations for their firearm
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and occupies more visual eyesight space than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Optic Facts

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) come with the reticle behind the zoom lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick.

  • Long distance types of shooting where shooters have extra time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most shots happen within shorter proximities and ranges
  • Shooters who like a clearer optic sight picture without room taken up by the bigger FFP reticle

Zoom for Glass

The quantity of magnification a scope supplies is figured out by the diameter, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Info About Single Power Lens Rifle Optics

A single power rifle scope or optic uses a magnification number designator like 4×32. This suggests the magnification power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this kind of optic can not fluctuate given that it is set from the factory.

Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Optic Info

Variable power rifle scopes use enhanced power. The power change is handled by using the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

Glass Power Level and Range Correlation

Here are some advised scope power settings and the distances where they can be efficiently used. Bear in mind that high magnification glass will not be as effective as lower magnification level optics since increased zoom can be a negative thing in certain situations. The exact same concept goes for extended ranges where the shooter needs increased power to see where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

Rifle Optic Lens Covering

All current rifle scope and optic lenses are coated. Lens covering is a crucial aspect of a shooting platform when considering high end rifle optics and scope systems.

Info on Rifle Scope Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope manufacturers also use “HD” or high-definition lens coatings which use various methods, chemicals, polarizations, and elements to draw out a wide range of colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope producers use “HD” to refer to “ED” meaning extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Rifle Glass Lens Finishing Versus Multi-Coating

Various optic lenses can even have various finishings applied to them. All lenses normally have at least some type of treatment or covering applied to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. This is since the lens isn’t simply a raw piece of glass. It becomes part of the finely tuned optic. It must have a covering applied to it so that the lens will be optimally usable in lots of types of environments, degrees of sunshine (full VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

Single covered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is generally a protective and improving multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single covered lens depends upon the scope manufacturer and how much money you spent on it. Both are indications of the lens quality.

Some scope manufacturers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” covered. Being “much better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of materials used in constructing the rifle scope.

Anti-water Lens Coverings

Water on a lens does not help with keeping a clear sight picture through a scope in any way. Lots of top of the line and premium optic manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic covering. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this kind of treatment. It treats the exterior of the Steiner optic lens so the water particles can not bind to it or create surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads roll off of the scope to keep a clear, water free sight picture.

Rifle Scope Mounting Alternatives

Installing solutions for scopes can be found in a couple of options. There are the standard scope rings which are separately mounted to the scope and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also generally come in quick release variations which use manual levers which permit rifle operators to rapidly install and dismount the scope.

Hex Key Glass Ring Mounting Solutions

Standard, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of separate rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are created for long range precision shooting. This type of scope install is great for rifles which need a long lasting, rock solid mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Scope Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly take off a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. A wide range of scopes can also be switched out if they all use a complementary designed mount. The quick detach design is CNC machined from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers fasten firmly to a flat top type Picatinny rail. This allows the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while retaining accuracy. These kinds of mounts are useful and handy for rifles which are shipped a lot, to remove the scope from the rifle for protection, or for sight systems which are utilized in between numerous rifles. An example of this mount style is the 30mm mount designed by the Vortex Optics brand. It typically costs around $250 USD

About Optic Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle optic can mess up a day of shooting and your costly optic by triggering fogging and developing residue inside of the scope tube. The majority of scopes prevent wetness from getting in the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof.

Glass Gas Purging

Another element of avoiding the accumulation of wetness inside of the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Considering that this space is already occupied by the gas, the optic is less affected by temperature alterations and pressure distinctions from the external environment which could potentially allow water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
