V-Brite Illuminated MOA Reticle
Uses the V-Plex format along with battery-powered electronics to illuminate the center dot for better low-light performance. Good for hunters/shooters during extra-low light conditions.
Second focal plane (SFP) reticles are located near the scope’s eyepiece behind the image erecting and magnifying lenses. This style of reticle does not visually change in size when you change the magnification. The advantage of an SFP reticle is that it always maintains the same appearance. Listed reticle subtensions used for estimating range, holdover, and wind drift correction are only accurate at one particular magnification.

Info Optics

Rifle scopes permit you to precisely aim a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They do this through magnification by utilizing a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted to account for different natural things like wind and elevation to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help the shooter understand precisely where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are viewing through the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended point of impact. A lot of contemporary rifle scopes have about 11 parts which are located inside and on the exterior of the optic. These scope parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage turrets or dials, objective focus rings, and other components. See all eleven parts of a rifle scope.

Rifle Optic Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Picking the optimal type of rifle scope is based on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

Info About First Focal Plane Glass

First focal plane optics (FFP) come with the reticle ahead of the magnifying lens. This causes the reticle to increase in size based upon the extent of zoom being used. The result is that the reticle measurements are the same at the magnified distance as they are at the non magnified range. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at 100 yards with no “zoom” is still the very same tick at one hundred yards with 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes are valuable for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where calculations are minor
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their aim point “hold over” and also “lead” ratios for their weapon
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and requires more visual eyesight room than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scope Facts

Second focal plane optics (SFP) come with the reticle behind the magnifying lens. This triggers the reticle to remain at the exact same overall size relative to the level of zoom being used. The final result is that the reticle measurements shift based upon the magnification applied to shoot over greater distances considering the reticle markings represent distinct increments which fluctuate with the magnification level. In the FFP illustration with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These styles of glass are convenient for:

  • Long distance types of shooting where shooters have additional time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most of the shots occur within much shorter ranges and proximities
  • Shooters who would like a clearer optic sight picture with less space used up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Magnification for Rifle Scopes

The level of scope zoom you need on your scope depends on the sort of shooting you intend to do. Virtually every style of rifle glass gives some level of zoom. The volume of zoom a scope supplies is determined by the dimension, thickness, and curves of the lenses within the rifle scope. The magnification of the optic is the “power” of the scope. This means what the shooter is aiming at through the scope is amplified times the power aspect of what can generally be seen by human eyes.

Info on Fixed Power Lens Glass

A single power rifle scope or optic comes with a magnification number designator like 4×32. This implies the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this kind of scope can not fluctuate considering that it is a fixed power optic.

Variable Power Lens Glass

Variable power rifle scopes use variable power levels. The power modification is accomplished by using the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power Level and Range of Optics

Here are some suggested scope power settings and the distances where they could be effectively used. Keep in mind that higher power optics and scopes will not be as practical as lower powered scopes since too much zoom can be a bad thing. The same idea relates to longer distances where the shooter needs sufficient power to see exactly where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Lens Finish for Glass

All modern rifle scope lenses are coated. There are various types and qualities of glass lens finishings. Lens finishing is a crucial aspect of a rifle when contemplating high-end rifle optics and targeting systems. The lenses are one of the most key parts of the glass because they are what your eye sees through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The coating on the lenses shields the lens exterior and even assists with anti glare from refracted daylight and color discernibility.

About Rifle Scope Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope brands likewise use “HD” or high-definition lens coverings which use various techniques, elements, polarizations, and chemicals to draw out separate colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope manufacturers use “HD” to refer to “ED” to signify the lens has extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Rifle Glass Lens Finish Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can also have various finishings used to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or finishing applied to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single coated lenses have a treatment applied to them which is typically a protective and boosting multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can shield the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less helpful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope developer and how much you spent for it. Both the manufacturer and amount are signs of the lens quality.

Some scope manufacturers also make it a point to define if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” covered. This means the lens has multiple treatments applied to the surfaces of the glass. If a lens gets multiple treatments, it can indicate that a manufacturer is taking numerous actions to combat various environmental elements like an anti-glare finish, a scratch resistant anti-abrasion finish, followed by a hydrophilic finish. This additionally doesn’t always imply the multi-coated lens is better than a single coated lens. Being “better” is dependent on the manufacturer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of components used in creating the rifle glass.

Anti-water Glass Lens Finishing

Water on a lens doesn’t assist with maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Numerous top of the line and military grade scope companies will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating.

Choices for Installing Rifle Optics on Long Guns

Installing approaches for scopes are available in a few choices. There are the basic scope rings which are separately mounted to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various kinds of mounts also normally come in quick release versions which use manual levers which allow rifle shooters to quickly install and dismount the glass.

Hex Key Scope Rings

Normal, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of separate rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for long range precision shooting. This type of scope mount is wonderful for rifles which require a long lasting, rock solid mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abused.

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Scope Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly connect and remove a scope from a rifle. Several scopes can also be switched out if they all use a similar designed mount. The quick detach design is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers attach firmly to a flat top type Picatinny rail. This enables the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, taken off of the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while keeping the original sighting settings. These kinds of mounts come in handy for rifles which are moved a lot, to take off the scope from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are adopted between a number of rifles. An example of this mount style is the 30mm mount from the Vortex Optics brand. It normally costs around $250 USD

Rifle Scope Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Wetness inside your rifle optic can mess up a day of shooting and your costly optic by triggering fogging and producing residue inside of the scope tube. Many scopes prevent moisture from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

Gas Purged Rifle Optic Tubes

Another element of preventing the accumulation of moisture inside of the rifle scope’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this space is currently occupied by the gas, the optic is less impacted by condition changes and pressure distinctions from the external environment which could possibly enable water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to look for.
