All About Rifle Optics

Rifle scopes enable you to specifically aim a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They do this through magnification by making use of a set of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adapted to account for varied ecological aspects like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand precisely where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are seeing using the optic as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. Most modern-day rifle scopes and optics have about 11 parts which are arranged within and on the exterior of the optic. These scope parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, modification dials or turrets, objective focus rings, and other elements. See all eleven parts of optics.

Rifle Glass Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Deciding upon the perfect type of rifle scope is based around what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Glass

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These kinds of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where calculations are small
  • Experienced shooters who know their target “hold over” as well as “lead” ratios for their firearms
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and occupies more visual eyesight room than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Glass Facts

Second focal plane glass (SFP) feature the reticle behind the magnification lens. This triggers the reticle to remain at the same scale relative to the volume of zoom being used. The end result is that the reticle measurements alter based on the zoom used to shoot over greater ranges since the markings represent distinct increments which change with the magnification level. In the FFP example with the SFP glass, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These particular varieties of scopes work for:

  • Far away styles of shooting where shooters have more time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most shots occur within shorter ranges and proximities
  • Shooters who want a clearer optic sight picture without area used up by the bigger FFP reticle

Ins and Outs of Optic Zoom

The amount of zoom a scope provides is identified by the size, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Single Power Lens Rifle Optic Details

A single power rifle scope and optic comes with a magnification number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of scope can not adjust because it is a fixed power optic.

Info on Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Optics

Variable power rifle scopes can be adjusted between magnification levels. It will list the magnification degree in a configuration such as 2-10×32. These numbers mean the zoom of the scope can be adjusted between 2x and 10x power. This always utilizes the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power manipulation is accomplished by operating the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell piece.

Power Levels and Range Correlations

Here are some suggested scope power settings and the ranges where they may be successfully used. Remember that high power scopes will not be as efficient as lower magnification level scope and optics since too much zoom can be a bad thing. The very same idea goes for longer distances where the shooter needs enough power to see where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Lens Finishing for Rifle Glass

All present day rifle scope and optic lenses are covered. Lens covering is an important aspect of a rifle’s setup when thinking about high end rifle optics and scope equipment.

Details on Rifle Scope Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope brands likewise use “HD” or high-definition lens finishes which use various processes, polarizations, aspects, and chemicals to draw out different colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” indicating extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating for Rifle Optics

Various scope lenses can also have various finishings applied to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or finishing applied to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. Since the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It is part of the finely tuned optic. It must have a covering placed on it so that the lens will be efficiently usable in many kinds of environments, degrees of light (full VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

Single coated lenses have a treatment applied to them which is generally a protective and boosting multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while decreasing glare and other less helpful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope maker and how much you spent on it. The scope’s maker and cost are indications of the lens quality.

Some scope makers also make it a point to define if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the manufacturer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in building the rifle scope.

Anti-water Rifle Scope Lens Finishing

Water on a lens doesn’t help with maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Lots of top of the line and military grade optic companies will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating.

Options for Installing Scopes on Firearms

Installing approaches for scopes come in a few options. There are the standard scope rings which are individually mounted to the optic and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also usually are made in quick release variations which use throw levers which permit rifle operators to quickly mount and dismount the scopes.

Hex Key Glass Ring Mounts

Basic, clamp design mounting optic rings use hex head screws to install to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on the tops of rifles. These forms of scope mounts use a pair of detached rings to support the scope, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum or similar materials which are designed for far away accuracy shooting. This kind of scope mount is good for rifles which require a resilient, hard use mount which will not shift regardless of how much the scope is moved about or abuse the rifle takes. These are the design of mounts you should get for a faithful scope system on a reach out and touch someone scouting or tournament rifle that will hardly ever need to be modified or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can additionally be used to stop the hex screws from wiggling out after they are mounted tightly in position. An example of these rings are the 30mm type from the Vortex Optics brand. The set normally costs around $200 USD

Rifle Glass Mounts with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly remove a scope and connect it to a different rifle. Several scopes can even be switched out if they all use a similar design mount. These types of mounts are convenient for rifle platforms which are carried a lot, to swap out the optic from the rifle for protecting the scope, or for scopes which are used in between numerous rifles.

Info on Rifle Optic Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Wetness inside your rifle optic can wreck a day on the range and your pricey optic by inducing fogging and creating residue within the scope’s tube. The majority of scopes protect against moisture from going into the optical tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant. Normally, these water resistant scopes can be submerged under 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can force moisture past the O-rings. This should be sufficient moisture avoidance for basic use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you anticipate taking your rifle aboard a watercraft and are worried about the optic still performing if it is submerged in water and you can still find the rifle.

Gas Purged Scope Tubes

Another component of avoiding the buildup of moisture within the rifle scope’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Considering that this area is already taken up by the gas, the glass is less influenced by climate shifts and pressure distinctions from the outside environment which may potentially permit water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to seek out.
