All About Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes permit you to exactly aim a rifle at different targets by lining up your eye with the target over a range. They do this through zoom by utilizing a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted for consideration of different environmental considerations like wind and elevation increases or decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand precisely where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are viewing through the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended point of impact. Most modern-day rifle scopes have around 11 parts which are arranged within and externally on the scope. These parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment dials, objective focus rings, and other parts. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle scopes.

The Styles of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Picking the perfect type of rifle glass is based on what type of shooting you plan to do.

About First Focal Plane Glass

Focal plane scopes (FFP) come with the reticle in front of the zoom lens. This triggers the reticle to increase in size based upon the amount of zoom being used. The result is that the reticle measurements are the same at the magnified distance as they are at the non amplified range. For example, one tick on a mil-dot reticle at 100 yards with no “zoom” is still the exact same tick at one hundred yards using 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away kinds of shooting
  • Shooting situations where estimations are low
  • Experienced shooters who understand their aim point “hold over” as well as “lead” ratios for their firearms
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is enlarged and requires more visual eyesight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scope Details

Second focal plane optics (SFP) come with the reticle behind the magnifying lens. This causes the reticle to remain at the exact same dimensions in connection with the volume of magnification being used. The end result is that the reticle dimensions shift based on the zoom applied to shoot over lengthier ranges given that the markings represent various increments which fluctuate with the zoom. In the FFP illustration with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement. These particular types of scopes are useful for:

  • Long distance types of shooting where shooters have extra time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most shots take place within much shorter ranges and spaces
  • Shooters who would like a clearer optic sight picture with less room used up by the larger size FFP reticle

About Rifle Glass Zoom

The amount of zoom a scope offers is determined by the diameter, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Fixed Power Lens Rifle Scope Facts

A single power rifle scope or optic uses a magnification number designator like 4×32. This means the magnification power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of scope can not change considering that it is set from the factory.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Scope Details

Variable power rifle scopes use variable power levels. The power change is handled using the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power Level and Range Correlation of Rifle Scopes

Here are some recommended scope power settings and the ranges where they can be efficiently used. High power scopes will not be as beneficial as lower magnification level glass considering too much zoom can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The same idea goes for longer ranges where the shooter needs enough power to see where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

Scope Lens Covering

All contemporary rifle optic and scope lenses are covered. Lens finishing can be a significant aspect of a rifle’s setup when looking at high end rifle optics and scope setups.

About Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope makers also use “HD” or high-definition lens coverings which use different procedures, polarizations, chemicals, and aspects to draw out different colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope producers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating

Various optic lenses can likewise have different finishings used to them. All lenses generally have at least some type of treatment or coating used to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is usually a protective and enhancing multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can preserve the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single covered lens depends upon the scope developer and just how much you spent on it. Both are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope makers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” covered. Being “better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of materials used in constructing the rifle scope.

Anti-water Lens Coatings

Water on a lens doesn’t help with maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Lots of top of the line and military grade optic companies will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic covering.

Rifle Scope Installing Options

Mounting solutions for scopes can be found in a few options. There are the basic scope rings which are separately installed to the scope and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different kinds of mounts also usually come in quick release versions which use manual levers which allow rifle operators to quickly install and remove the glass.

Hex Key Rifle Optic Ring Mounting Solutions

Standard, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two different rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for long range precision shooting. This type of scope install is excellent for rifles which require a long lasting, sound mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Optic Rings

These kinds of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly take off a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. Several scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a complementary designed mount. The quick detach design is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers connect tightly to a flat top type Picatinny rail. This allows the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while maintaining accuracy. These kinds of mounts come in beneficial for shooting platforms which are shipped a lot, to remove the scope from the rifle for protection, or for aiming systems which are adopted between multiple rifles. An example of this mount style is the 30mm mount designed by the Vortex Optics manufacturer. It usually costs around $250 USD

Sealing and Gas Purging for Glass Tubes

Moisture inside your rifle optic can destroy a day of shooting and your expensive optic by triggering fogging and producing residue inside of the scope tube. Many scopes avoid moisture from getting in the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

Gas Purged Rifle Scope Tubes

Another part of preventing the accumulation of moisture within the rifle scope’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this area is already taken up by the gas, the glass is less influenced by temp alterations and pressure distinctions from the outdoor environment which might possibly permit water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
