About Optics

Rifle scopes enable you to exactly align a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target over a range. They do this through magnification by utilizing a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted to take into account varied natural aspects like wind and elevation increases or decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand exactly where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are seeing with the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Most modern rifle optics have around 11 parts which are found within and outside of the optic. These scope parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage and elevation turrets or dials, focus rings, and other elements. See all eleven parts of an optic.

Rifle Scope Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Going for the optimal type of rifle glass depends on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Glass Info

First focal plane optics (FFP) come with the reticle ahead of the magnification lens. This induces the reticle to increase in size based upon the level of zoom being used. The result is that the reticle measurements are the same at the enhanced distance as they are at the non magnified distance. For instance, one tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards without “zoom” is still the exact same tick at one hundred yards with 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes are valuable for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away kinds of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where computations are minor
  • Experienced shooters who know their target “hold over” plus “lead” relationships for their firearms
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is bigger and uses up more visual eyesight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scope Details

Second focal plane glass (SFP) include the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. This triggers the reticle to remain at the exact same overall size in connection with the volume of magnification being used. The result is that the reticle dimensions shift based upon the zoom used to shoot over lengthier ranges considering the markings represent distinct increments which differ with the zoom level. In the FFP example with the SFP optic, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These particular types of optics work for:

  • Far away forms of shooting where shooters have more time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most of the shots take place within shorter proximities and ranges
  • Shooters who prefer a clearer optic picture with less room taken up by the enlarged FFP reticle

Rifle Glass Zoom

The extent of scope zoom you need on your optic depends on the style of shooting you would like to do. Nearly every style of rifle glass gives some amount of magnification. The amount of magnification a scope offers is determined by the dimension, thickness, and curvatures of the lens glass within the rifle optic. The magnification level of the scope is the “power” of the opic. This implies what the shooter is checking out through the scope is magnified times the power element of what can typically be seen by human eyes.

Single Power Lens Optics

A single power rifle optic comes with a zoom number designator like 4×32. This indicates the magnification power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of scope can not adjust given that it is fixed.

Adjustable Power Lens Optics

Variable power rifle scopes can be adjusted between magnification power levels. It will note the zoom level in a format like 2-10×32. These numbers indicate the magnification of the scope can be changed in between 2x and 10x power. This also involves the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power adjustment is achieved by working with the power ring component of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell piece.

Power Levels and Range

Here are some advised scope power levels and the ranges where they may be successfully used. Highly magnified scopes will not be as useful as lower magnification glass considering that too much zoom can be a bad thing. The exact same concept goes for longer distances where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see where to properly aim the rifle.

Details on Lens Finish

All top teir rifle glass lenses are coated. Lens finishing can be an important element of a rifle’s setup when thinking about high end rifle optics and scope equipment.

About Scope Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some rifle glass suppliers also use “HD” or high-def glass finishes that employ different processes, polarizations, elements, and chemicals to enhance different color ranges and viewable definition through the lens. This high-def covering is typically used with more costly high density lens glass which drops light’s potential to refract by means of the lens glass. Some scope corporations use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass. ED deals with how colors are represented on the chroma spectrum and the chromatic aberration or deviance which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration can be noticeable over objects with defined shapes as light hits the item from particular angles.

Single Finishing Versus Multi-Coating

Different scope lenses can even have various coatings applied to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or finishing applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. This is since the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass. It becomes part of the carefully tuned optic. It requires a coating to be applied to it so that the lens will be optimally usable in many kinds of environments, degrees of light (full VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

This lens treatment can offer protection to the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less advantageous things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends on the scope producer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope producers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of products used in constructing the rifle scope.

Details on Anti-water Finish

Water on a lens does not help with keeping a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Lots of top of the line and high-end optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating.

Options for Mounting Scopes on Long Guns

Installing options for scopes can be found in a few options. There are the standard scope rings which are separately installed to the optic and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also generally come in quick release variations which use toss levers which enable rifle shooters to quickly mount and remove the glass.

Hex Key Glass Rings

Basic, clamp-on style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to install to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on the tops of rifles. These types of scope mounts use double independent rings to support the optic, and are usually constructed from 7075 T6 billet aluminum or similar materials which are developed for long distance accuracy shooting. This form of scope mount is ideal for rifle systems which are in need of a resilient, rock solid mount which will not shift despite just how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes. These are the type of mounts you want for a faithful optics system on a reach out and touch someone hunting or hard target interdiction long gun that will almost never need to be changed or recalibrated. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can also be used on the mount’s screws to prevent the hex screw threads from backing out after they are installed firmly in place. An example of these mounting rings are the 30mm style made by the Vortex Optics company. The set generally costs around $200 USD

Rifle Optic Mounts with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly connect and detach a scope from a rifle before reattaching it to a different rifle. Numerous scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a compatible style mount. These types of mounts are convenient for rifles which are transferred a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protecting the scope, or for optics which are used between multiple rifles.

Rifle Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Wetness inside your rifle optic can spoil a day on the range and your highly-priced optic by inducing fogging and generating residue within the scope’s tube. Most scopes protect against humidity from entering the optical tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Usually, these scopes can be immersed under 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be plenty of humidity avoidance for basic use rifles, unless you anticipate taking your rifle on your motorboat and are worried about the optic still working if it is submerged in water and you can still rescue the rifle.

Gas Purged Rifle Optic Tubes

Another component of avoiding the accumulation of wetness inside of the rifle optic’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Considering that this space is already occupied by the gas, the optic is less affected by temperature changes and pressure variations from the outside environment which could potentially enable water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
