Info About Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes permit you to specifically aim a rifle at different targets by lining up your eye with the target at range. They accomplish this through magnifying the target by employing a set of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted for the consideration of various natural aspects like wind and elevation decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to understand precisely where the bullet will land based upon the sight picture you are seeing with the optic as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. Many contemporary rifle optics have about 11 parts which are located inside and on the exterior of the scope. These optic pieces consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, modification turrets or dials, objective focus rings, and other elements. Learn about the eleven parts of optics.

Rifle Optic Varieties

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” kind of scopes. The sort of focal plane an optic has establishes where the reticle or crosshair lies in connection with the optic’s magnification. It actually indicates the reticle is situated behind or ahead of the magnifying lens of the optic. Deciding on the most ideal style of rifle optic depends on what variety of hunting or shooting you anticipate undertaking.

About First Focal Plane Scopes

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the magnifying lens. This triggers the reticle to increase in size based upon the amount of zoom being used. The result is that the reticle measurements are the same at the enhanced distance as they are at the non magnified distance. For instance, one tick on a mil-dot reticle at 100 yards with no “zoom” is still the very same tick at one hundred yards with 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes work for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away kinds of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where computations are small
  • Experienced shooters who know their aim point “hold over” as well as “lead” correlations for their firearms
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and requires more visual eyesight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Optic Facts

Second focal plane optics (SFP) include the reticle behind the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement.

  • Long distance kinds of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most shots occur within much shorter ranges and distances
  • Shooters who choose a clearer optic sight picture without area taken up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Details on Optic Zoom

The quantity of scope magnification you require is based on the style of shooting you plan to do. Practically every style of rifle optic delivers some amount of magnification. The amount of magnification a scope provides is determined by the diameter, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the opic. This suggests what the shooter is looking at through the scope is magnified times the power element of what can normally be seen by human eyes.

Single Power Lens Rifle Scope Details

A single power rifle optic uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This means the magnification power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this type of optic can not adjust because it is fixed.

About Variable Power Lens Rifle Glass

Variable power rifle scopes have adjustable power. It will note the zoom level in a configuration such as 2-10×32. These numbers suggest the zoom of the scope could be set in between 2x and 10x power. This also incorporates the powers in-between 2 and 10. The power modification is achieved utilizing the power ring component of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Scope Power Level and Ranges

Here are some recommended scope power levels and the ranges where they may be effectively used. High power rifle scope glass will not be as effective as lower magnification optics due to the fact that too much magnification can be a bad thing. The same concept relates to extended ranges where the shooter needs to have adequate power to see exactly where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Details on Rifle Optic Lens Finishing

All present day rifle optic lenses are covered. Lens coating can be an essential aspect of a shooting system when buying high end rifle optics and scope systems.

HD Versus ED Optic Lens Coatings

Some scope brands likewise use “HD” or high-definition lens coatings which use different processes, polarizations, chemicals, and aspects to draw out a wide range of colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” to signify the lens has extra-low dispersion glass.

Details on Single Finish Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can also have various coatings applied to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or finishing used to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends on the scope manufacturer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope makers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are covered or “multi” covered. Being “much better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of materials used in building the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Finishing for Glass

Water on a lens doesn’t assist with maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Numerous top of the line and military grade optic companies will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic covering.

Rifle Scope Installation Alternatives

Mounting options for scopes are available in a few choices. There are the basic scope rings which are separately mounted to the optic and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also typically are made in quick release versions which use manual levers which permit rifle shooters to rapidly mount and dismount the scope.

Hex Key Glass Rings

Normal, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two different rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is designed for long range accuracy shooting. This type of scope mount is great for rifles which need a durable, sound mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Glass Ring Mounts

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly detach a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. Multiple scopes can also be switched out if they all use a similar designed mount. The quick detach design is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers connect solidly to a flat top type Picatinny rail. This allows the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, taken off of the rifle, and remounted while preserving accuracy. These types of mounts are useful and beneficial for shooting platforms which are moved a lot, to take off the glass from the rifle for protection, or for sight systems which are employed in between several rifles. An example of this mount type is the 30mm mount from the Vortex Optics manufacturer. It normally costs around $250 USD

About Scope Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle scope can mess up a day of shooting and your pricey optic by triggering fogging and developing residue inside of the scope tube. Many scopes avoid moisture from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof.

Rifle Scope Gas Purging

Another part of avoiding the buildup of moisture inside of the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this space is already occupied by the gas, the glass is less influenced by climate alterations and pressure distinctions from the outside environment which might possibly permit water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
