Primary Arms SLX 3-18x50mm FFP Rifle Scope – Illuminated ACSS-HUD-DMR-308
The SLx optics are the heart of our lineup. The trusted optics that have built our reputation through the years. Although many SLx optics will be familiar to Primary Arms fans, we are always pushing forward with new generations and adding even more options in response to the demands of our loyal customers.
The 3-18x50mm is equipped with the ACSS HUD DMR 308 reticle, the most advanced moving target reticle in the world. Capable of guiding first shot hits on moving targets out to a never before seen 600 yards, HUD DMR even accounts for three different target speeds. You can’t hit any target if you don’t know how far out they are, so HUD DMR takes the guesswork out of range estimation. The integrated ranging system quickly and accurately provides target ranging, wind holds, and BDC out to a full 1,000 yards. Tuned for common .308-loads, this reticle can be used with some .223-loadings as well.
The 3-18x50mm scope body is our most advanced to date, offering a removable and replaceable fin on the power ring allows for rapid adjustment of the magnification range just like a throw lever, with the placement of the fin entirely at the discretion of the operator. The improved turrets have tactile and audible 0.1 MIL click adjustments, as well as offering easy reset once you’ve zero’ed your rifle, and secure locking to prevent accidental knob turning. The illumination turret offers six settings with an ‘OFF’ setting between each for fast switching to your preferred setting. A smooth parallax adjustment and fast focus eyepiece work together to provide a perfectly crisp image of the target and reticle.

Info Glass

Rifle scopes enable you to exactly align a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target over a distance. They do this through zoom by employing a set of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted for consideration of separate natural considerations like wind and elevation decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand exactly where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are seeing via the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. A lot of contemporary rifle optics have about 11 parts which are found internally and on the exterior of the scope. These optic pieces consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment dials, focus rings, and other components. See all eleven parts of scopes.

The Varieties of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Deciding upon the perfect type of rifle glass depends on what type of shooting you plan to do.

Info About First Focal Plane Optics

First focal plane glass (FFP) feature the reticle ahead of the magnifying lens. This causes the reticle to increase in size based on the extent of zoom being used. The benefit is that the reticle measurements are the same at the magnified distance as they are at the non amplified distance. As an example, one tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards without having “zoom” is still the corresponding tick at one hundred yards using 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes work for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away types of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where estimations are minor
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their target “hold over” and also “lead” ratios for their long gun
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is bigger and occupies more visual eyesight space than a SFP reticle

Info on Second Focal Plane Glass

Second focal plane optics (SFP) feature the reticle to the rear of the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement.

  • Far away styles of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most of the shots occur within shorter ranges and proximities
  • Shooters who would like a clearer optic sight picture without area used up by the larger size FFP reticle

Rifle Scope Magnification

The extent of scope zoom you need depends upon the type of shooting you plan to do. Just about every style of rifle glass supplies some degree of magnification. The quantity of zoom a scope supplies is established by the diameter, density, and curves of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the opic. This implies what the shooter is looking at through the scope is magnified times the power aspect of what can usually be seen by human eyes.

About Single Power Lens Optics

A single power rifle optic will have a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this type of scope can not change considering that it is a fixed power optic.

Info About Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Optics

Variable power rifle scopes have adjustable power. These types of scopes will note the zoom level in a configuration such as 2-10×32. These numbers suggest the zoom of the scope can be changed in between 2x and 10x power. This always utilizes the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power manipulation is achieved using the power ring component of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell piece.

The Power and Range Correlation of Rifle Glass

Here are some recommended scope power settings and the ranges where they may be efficiently used. High power glass will not be as useful as lower magnification level optics because too much magnification can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The exact same concept goes for longer ranges where the shooter needs to have adequate power to see precisely where to properly aim the rifle.

Optic Lens Coating

All modern-day rifle optic lenses are layered. There are various types and qualities of glass coatings. Lens coating is a crucial element of a rifle’s setup when looking into high-end rifle optics and targeting systems. The lenses are among the most crucial pieces of the optic because they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The finish on the lenses protects the lens surface area and assists with anti glare capabilities from refracted sunshine and color discernibility.

HD Versus ED Lenses

Some rifle scope makers even use “HD” or high-def lense finishings which employ various processes, polarizations, elements, and chemicals to enhance a wide range of colors and viewable target visibility through the lens. This high-def finish is frequently used with higher density glass which lowers light’s capability to refract by means of the lens glass. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” suggesting extra-low dispersion glass. ED deals with how certain colors are represented on the chromatic spectrum and the chromatic difference or aberration which is similarly called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration is often noticeable around items with hard shapes as light hits the object from various angles.

Single Rifle Optic Lens Finishing Versus Multi-Coating

Different scope lenses can even have different coverings applied to them. All lenses usually have at least some type of treatment or covering applied to them before they are used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. This is because the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass. It becomes part of the carefully tuned optic. It requires a coating to be applied to it so that the lens will be optimally usable in lots of kinds of environments, degrees of sunlight (full VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is typically a protective and enhancing multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less helpful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends upon the scope developer and how much you spent for it. Both the manufacturer and amount are indications of the lens quality.

Some scope manufacturers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. Being “better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of products used in constructing the rifle scope.

About Anti-water Finishing

Water on an optical lens does not help with retaining a clear sight picture through a scope whatsoever. Lots of top of the line and premium optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic covering. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this kind of treatment. It treats the exterior surfaces of the Steiner optic lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or produce surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads slide off of the scope to maintain a clear, water free sight picture.

Scope Mounting Choices

Mounting options for scopes are available in a couple of options. There are the standard scope rings which are individually installed to the optic and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These different kinds of mounts also typically come in quick release versions which use toss levers which enable rifle operators to rapidly mount and dismount the glass.

Rifle Optic Mounts with Hex Key Rings

Basic, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on the tops of rifles. These varieties of scope mounts use a pair of independent rings to support the optic, and are normally constructed from 7075 T6 billet aluminum or similar materials which are designed for long distance accuracy shooting. This kind of scope mount is ideal for rifle systems which need a resilient, rock solid mount which will not change regardless of how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes. These are the style of mounts you should get for a faithful scope setup on a far away scouting or sniper competition firearm which will hardly ever need to be modified or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can also be used on the scope mount screws to keep the hex screws from wiggling out after they are mounted firmly in place. An example of these rings are the 30mm style from Vortex Optics. The set typically costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Scope Ring Mounting Solutions

These kinds of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly connect and take off a scope from a rifle. A wide range of scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a complementary style mount. The quick detach design is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers fasten solidly to a flat top style Picatinny rail. This permits the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while preserving accuracy. These types of mounts are useful and convenient for shooting platforms which are moved a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are adopted in between several rifles. An example of this mount style is the 30mm mount designed by the Vortex Optics manufacturer. It normally costs around $250 USD

Sealing and Gas Purging for Optic Tubes

Moisture inside your rifle scope can wreck a day of shooting and your costly optic by triggering fogging and making residue within the scope’s tube. Many scopes protect against wetness from getting in the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant. Typically, these optics can be immersed beneath 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can force moisture past the O-rings. This should be plenty of moisture content prevention for basic use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you intend on taking your rifle aboard a watercraft and are worried about the optic still functioning if it goes overboard and you can still rescue the firearm.

Scope Gas Purging

Another part of preventing the accumulation of moisture within the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Since this area is currently occupied by the gas, the optic is less affected by temperature level alterations and pressure differences from the outside environment which could possibly allow water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to seek out.
