Rifle Scope Product Details

Primary Arms PLx 6-30x56mm FFP Rifle Scope – Illuminated MIL-Dot
The PLx rifle scopes are our flagship scopes manufactured and assembled in Japan with superior glass clarity and the best materials available. The advanced yet intuitive scope body features maximize the capability of the latest ACSS reticle found inside. Our PLx line stands toe-to-toe with leading low power variable and precision scopes offered by other brands.
This 6-30x56mm Platinum Series scope is equipped with the first focal plane illuminated MIL-Dot reticle. Properly matched with MIL/MIL turret adjustments, this traditional reticle in use by military forces in almost every country allows shooters to range and find their holdovers without being forced to use caliber-specific BDC systems. Each dot is .2 MIL in diameter, meaning the space between the edges of each dot equal to .8 MIL. The center dot floats between the crosshair and measures .08 MIL to ensure your target is not obscured at long distances. The included manual goes into greater depth on the reticle to make sure you take full advantage of its features whether you are hunting or target shooting.
Our advanced reticle designs promote set-and-forget zeroing, but for those who prefer to count their clicks, the Japanese made platinum series features tactile, audible, and — more importantly — precise and repeatable 0.1 MIL click adjustments. Once zero has been achieved, the finger-adjustable turrets can be easily reset to 0 as well, allowing future adjustments to be readily tracked. To protect your zero, the turrets are locking. Pull out on the turrets to make your adjustments, push in to lock them down and ensure bumps on the range or in a bag won’t throw off your zero.

Rifle Optic Details

Rifle scopes enable you to specifically aim a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They do this through magnification by employing a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adapted for consideration of separate environmental elements like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help the shooter understand exactly where the bullet will land based upon the sight picture you are viewing with the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Many modern rifle scopes and optics have around eleven parts which are arranged internally and externally on the optic. These parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, elevation dials or turrets, focus rings, and other parts. See all eleven parts of optics.

Rifle Scope Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Choosing the perfect type of rifle scope is based around what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Glass Details

Focal plane scopes (FFP) include the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These styles of scopes are helpful for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where computations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who know their target “hold over” and also “lead” relationships for their weapon
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is bigger and takes up more visual sight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scope Details

Second focal plane optics (SFP) feature the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement.

  • Far away types of shooting where shooters have extra time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most shots happen within much shorter spaces and ranges
  • Shooters who prefer a clearer optic sight picture with less space used up by the larger size FFP reticle

Scope Magnification

The extent of scope magnification you need on your glass depends upon the type of shooting you wish to do. Nearly every style of rifle optic delivers some level of zoom. The level of zoom a scope supplies is established by the size, density, and curves of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification level of the scope is the “power” of the scope. This indicates what the shooter is observing through the scope is magnified times the power factor of what can usually be seen by human eyes.

Fixed Single Power Lens Glass Details

A single power rifle optic and scope will have a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the magnification power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of scope can not fluctuate considering that it is a set power scope.

Info About Variable Power Lens Optics

Variable power rifle scopes use enhanced power. The power change is handled using the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power Level and Range of Optics

Here are some suggested scope powers and the ranges where they could be effectively used. Consider that higher magnification optics will not be as effective as lower powered optics because too much magnification can be a bad thing. The same idea applies to longer ranges where the shooter needs to have adequate power to see exactly where to properly aim the rifle.

Info on Scope Lens Coatings

All contemporary rifle optic and scope lenses are layered. There are various types and qualities of coverings. Lens covering can be an important element of a rifle’s setup when looking into high-end rifle optics and targeting systems. The glass lenses are among the most essential parts of the glass as they are what your eye sees through while sighting a rifle in on the point of impact. The finishing on the lenses shields the lens exterior and even assists with anti glare capabilities from excess daylight and color visibility.

HD Versus ED Lens Coatings

Some scope manufacturers also use “HD” or high-definition lens coverings which use different methods, polarizations, chemicals, and components to draw out different colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope manufacturers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass.

Rifle Scope Lens Single Finish Versus Multi-Coating

Different scope lenses can also have different finishes applied to them. All lenses typically have at least some kind of treatment or finishing applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. Due to the fact that the lens isn’t simply a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It is part of the finely tuned optic. It needs to have a finishing applied to it so that it will be efficiently functional in numerous kinds of environments, degrees of light (full light VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

Single coated lenses have a treatment applied to them which is normally a protective and improving multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can shield the lens from scratches while decreasing glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single layered lens depends upon the scope company and how much money you spent for it. Both the manufacturer and amount are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope manufacturers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” covered. Being “better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of products used in building the rifle scope.

Rifle Scope Lens Anti-water Finishing

Water on a scope’s lens doesn’t assist with preserving a clear sight picture through a scope in any way. Lots of top of the line or high-end scope manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic finishing. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this sort of treatment. It deals with the surface of the Steiner glass lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or create surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads sheet off of the scope to keep a clear, water free sight picture.

Scope Mounting Choices

Mounting approaches for scopes come in a couple of choices. There are the standard scope rings which are separately installed to the scope and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These different types of mounts also usually come in quick release versions which use manual levers which enable rifle operators to rapidly install and remove the optics.

Hex Key Rifle Scope Ring Mounts

Basic, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope mounting rails on the tops of rifles. These varieties of scope mounts use two individual rings to support the scope, and are normally constructed from 7075 T6 billet aluminum or similar materials which are designed for far away accuracy shooting. This kind of scope mount is exceptional for rifles which need a resilient, unfailing mount which will not shift despite just how much the scope is moved about or jarring the rifle takes. These are the style of mounts you really want to have for a devoted optics setup on a long distance hunting or tournament firearm that will rarely need to be changed or recalibrated. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can additionally be used on the scope mount’s screws to protect against the hex screws from backing out after they are mounted firmly in place. An example of these rings are the 30mm type from the Vortex Optics brand. The set generally costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Optic Ring Mounts

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly remove a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Numerous scopes can also be switched out if they all use a compatible design mount. These types of mounts are convenient for rifles which are carried a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are used in between multiple rifles or are situationally focused.

Optic Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Wetness inside your rifle optic can ruin a day of shooting and your costly optic by triggering fogging and developing residue inside of the scope tube. Many scopes avoid moisture from getting in the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

What to Know About Glass Tube Gas Purging

Another part of avoiding the accumulation of wetness within the rifle optic’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this area is currently occupied by the gas, the optic is less altered by temperature changes and pressure variations from the outside environment which might potentially permit water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
