Facts About Rifle Optics

Rifle scopes enable you to exactly aim a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target over a distance. They accomplish this through magnification using a set of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be dialed in to account for many ecological aspects like wind speed and elevation increases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand exactly where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are seeing with the optic as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. The majority of modern rifle scopes have around 11 parts which are located internally and externally on the scope. These parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, modification dials, objective focus rings, and other elements. See all eleven parts of scopes.

The Varieties of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” style of scopes. The kind of focal plane a scope has establishes where the reticle or crosshair is located in connection with the scopes magnification. It actually implies the reticle is behind or in front of the magnification lens of the scope. Selecting the best kind of rifle glass is based on what kind of hunting or shooting you plan on undertaking.

Info About First Focal Plane Optics

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These types of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where calculations are small
  • Experienced shooters who understand their aim point “hold over” and “lead” correlations for their firearms
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is enlarged and takes up more visual sight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Optics

Second focal plane optics (SFP) include the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement.

  • Far away forms of shooting where shooters have more time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most of the shots occur within shorter spaces and ranges
  • Shooters who like a clearer optic sight picture with less space taken up by the bigger FFP reticle

Ins and Outs of Optic Magnification

The quantity of magnification a scope supplies is identified by the size, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

About Fixed Single Power Lens Rifle Optics

A single power rifle optic will have a magnification number designator like 4×32. This means the magnification power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of scope can not adjust considering that it is a fixed power optic.

Variable Power Lens Optic Info

Variable power rifle scopes use variable power levels. The power adjustment is handled by using the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power Level and Range of Optics

Here are some recommended scope power levels and the ranges where they can be efficiently used. Bear in mind that higher power scopes and optics will not be as effective as lower powered glass due to the fact that too much zoom can be a bad thing. The same applies to extended distances where the shooter needs to have enough power to see where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Lens Finish for Rifle Scopes

All modern rifle optic and scope lenses are covered in special coatings. There are different types and qualities of glass coatings. Lens coating is an essential element of a rifle’s setup when looking into luxury rifle optics and scope units. The lenses are one of the most crucial pieces of the scope considering they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The coating on the lenses offers protection to the lens exterior and improves anti glare capabilities from refracted natural light and color perception.

Details on Rifle Optic Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope brands also use “HD” or high-definition lens finishings which use various methods, chemicals, components, and polarizations to draw out a wide range of colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” meaning extra-low dispersion glass.

About Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating

Various optic lenses can also have different coverings used to them. All lenses usually have at least some type of treatment or covering used to them before they are used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is generally a protective and boosting multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope producer and the amount you spent paying for it. Both the make and cost are signs of the lens quality.

Some scope producers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are covered or “multi” covered. Being “better” depends on the manufacturer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Lens Covering

Water on an optical lens does not improve maintaining a clear sight picture through an optic whatsoever. Many top of the line and premium scope manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic finishing. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this type of treatment. It treats the surface area of the Steiner scope lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or create surface tension. The result is that the water beads slide off of the scope to maintain a clear, water free sight picture.

Options for Installing Glass on Firearms

Mounting solutions for scopes come in a couple of choices. There are the standard scope rings which are separately installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different types of mounts also generally are made in quick release versions which use toss levers which permit rifle operators to quickly mount and dismount the glass.

Rifle Glass Mounting Solutions with Hex Key Rings

Standard, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of separate rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is designed for long distance accuracy shooting. This type of scope install is perfect for rifles which need a durable, sound mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abused.

Quick-Release Cantilever Scope Ring Mounting Solutions

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly take off a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Several scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a similar design mount. These types of mounts come in handy for long guns which are transferred a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for scopes which are used in between several rifles.

About Rifle Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Wetness inside your rifle scope can ruin a day of shooting and your costly optic by bringing about fogging and developing residue inside of the scope tube. Many scopes prevent moisture from going into the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof.

Gas Purged Rifle Glass Tubes

Another component of preventing the buildup of wetness inside of the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this area is already taken up by the gas, the optic is less altered by climate changes and pressure differences from the outside environment which could potentially permit water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
