Facts About Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes enable you to precisely aim a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target over a range. They do this through zoom by using a set of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adjusted for the consideration of separate environmental factors like wind and elevation increases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to understand exactly where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are viewing via the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Many modern rifle scopes have around 11 parts which are arranged inside and externally on the optic. These parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, modification dials or turrets, focus rings, and other elements. See all eleven parts of a scope.

The Types of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Choosing the optimal type of rifle scope depends on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Optic Info

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These types of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away kinds of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their aim point “hold over” and “lead” ratios for their weapon
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and takes up more visual eyesight area than a SFP reticle

About Second Focal Plane Glass

Second focal plane optics (SFP) come with the reticle behind the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement.

  • Far away styles of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most of the shots happen within much shorter ranges and distances
  • Shooters who select a clearer optic sight picture with less space taken up by the bigger FFP reticle

Rifle Optic Zoom

The extent of scope zoom you require is based on the sort of shooting you intend to do. Just about every type of rifle optic supplies some degree of magnification. The volume of zoom a scope offers is identified by the size, thickness, and curvatures of the lens glass within the rifle optic. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope. This indicates what the shooter is looking at through the scope is magnified times the power factor of what can generally be seen by human eyes.

Info on Fixed Single Power Lens Optics

A single power rifle scope or optic will have a zoom number designator like 4×32. This indicates the magnification power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of optic can not adjust since it is a set power scope.

Variable Power Lens Scopes

Variable power rifle scopes can be modified between magnified levels. The power adjustment is accomplished by the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power Level and Range of Optics

Here are some suggested scope power levels and the ranges where they can be effectively used. Remember that high power optics will not be as practical as lower magnification level scopes since too much zoom can be a negative thing in certain situations. The same idea goes for extended ranges where the shooter needs adequate power to see where to properly aim the rifle.

About Rifle Scope Lens Finishes

All modern-day rifle scope lenses are layered. Lens finishing is an essential aspect of a rifle’s setup when considering high end rifle optics and scope equipment.

HD Versus ED Lenses

Some scope manufacturers likewise use “HD” or high-definition lens finishes which use various methods, aspects, chemicals, and polarizations to draw out separate colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope producers use “HD” to refer to “ED” meaning extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating

Various optic lenses can also have different finishings used to them. All lenses generally have at least some type of treatment or coating used to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single coated lenses have a treatment applied to them which is usually a protective and enhancing multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can shield the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less advantageous things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope company and how much you spent for it. Both the manufacturer and amount are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope makers also make it a point to define if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. Being “better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Glass Lens Finishing

Water on a lens does not assist with keeping a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Numerous top of the line and high-end optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic finish which is water repellent.

Options for Mounting Rifle Scopes on Firearms

Mounting solutions for scopes can be found in a couple of choices. There are the basic scope rings which are individually installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different types of mounts also typically are made in quick release versions which use throw levers which enable rifle operators to quickly install and remove the glass.

Rifle Glass Mounting Solutions with Hex Key Rings

Normal, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of separate rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is developed for long range accuracy shooting. This type of scope install is excellent for rifles which require a durable, sound mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Optic Mounting Solutions with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly detach a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Several scopes can also be switched out if they all use a similar design mount. These types of mounts are handy for long guns which are transferred a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for scopes which are used in between several rifles or are situationally focused.

Info Around Rifle Scope Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Wetness inside your rifle optic can destroy a day on the range and your highly-priced optic by causing fogging and producing residue inside of the scope tube. Many optics protect against wetness from going into the scope tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Normally, these water-resistant optics can be submerged underneath 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be more than enough wetness avoidance for conventional use rifles, unless you anticipate taking your rifle on your motorboat and are worried about the optic still functioning if it goes over the side and you can still retrieve the rifle.

Gas Purged Optic Tubes

Another component of preventing the accumulation of wetness inside of the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this area is already occupied by the gas, the glass is less influenced by climate changes and pressure distinctions from the external environment which could possibly enable water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
