Information About Rifle Optics

Rifle scopes allow you to specifically align a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They accomplish this through magnification by employing a set of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be dialed in to account for varied natural factors like wind and elevation increases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to understand exactly where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are seeing via the optic as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended point of impact. A lot of modern rifle optics have around eleven parts which are found inside and on the exterior of the scope body. These parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage turrets or dials, focus rings, and other components. See all eleven parts of a rifle optical system.

The Styles of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” style of scopes. The kind of focal plane an optic has identifies where the reticle or crosshair is located in relation to the scopes magnification. It actually suggests the reticle is situated behind or in front of the magnifying lens of the scope. Picking the best form of rifle scope is based upon what type of hunting or shooting you plan on doing.

Info on First Focal Plane Glass

First focal plane glass (FFP) come with the reticle in front of the magnifying lens. This induces the reticle to increase in size based on the extent of magnification being used. The result is that the reticle measurements are the same at the enhanced range as they are at the non magnified range. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards without “zoom” is still the exact same tick at 100 yards with 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes work for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting situations where computations are marginal
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their target “hold over” plus “lead” equations for their long gun
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and occupies more visual eyesight area than a SFP reticle

Info on Second Focal Plane Glass

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) include the reticle behind the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement.

  • Far away types of shooting where shooters have more time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most shots occur within much shorter spaces and ranges
  • Shooters who select a clearer optic sight picture without space used up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Magnification for Rifle Glass

The quantity of magnification a scope supplies is determined by the size, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

About Fixed Power Lens Optics

A single power rifle optic and scope comes with a zoom number designator like 4×32. This means the magnification power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this type of optic can not fluctuate given that it is a set power scope.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Optics

Variable power rifle scopes use enhanced power. The power modification is performed by making use of the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Power Levels and Range Correlations

Here are some recommended scope powers and the ranges where they can be successfully used. High power rifle scope glass will not be as effective as lower magnification level optics considering too much magnification can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The same concept relates to extended ranges where the shooter needs to have enough power to see where to best aim the rifle.

Rifle Optic Lens Finishing

All modern-day rifle scope lenses are covered in special coatings. There are different types and qualities of coverings. Lens finish is a crucial aspect of a rifle’s setup when looking at high-end rifle optics and scope equipment. The lenses are among the most significant components of the optic since they are what your eye sees through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The coating on the lenses protects the lens surface area and improves anti glare capabilities from refracted direct sunlight and color perception.

Info on Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope producers also use “HD” or high-definition lens finishes which use different processes, polarizations, aspects, and chemicals to draw out separate colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope producers use “HD” to refer to “ED” to signify the lens has extra-low dispersion glass.

What to Know About Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating

Various scope lenses can also have various finishings applied to them. All lenses normally have at least some kind of treatment or finishing applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic. This is because the lens isn’t simply a raw piece of glass. It is part of the carefully tuned optic. It must have a covering applied to it so that it will be efficiently functional in numerous types of environments, degrees of sunshine (full light VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

Single covered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is usually a protective and enhancing multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can preserve the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less helpful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single covered lens depends upon the scope manufacturer and the amount you spent for it. Both are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope producers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” covered. Being “much better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of materials used in building the rifle scope.

Anti-water Lens Coating

Water on an optic’s lens doesn’t assist with retaining a clear sight picture through an optic in any way. Many top of the line and premium optic producers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this sort of treatment. It deals with the surface of the Steiner scope lens so the water particles can not bind to it or produce surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads move off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Rifle Optic Mounting Choices

Mounting options for scopes are available in a couple of options. There are the basic scope rings which are separately installed to the scope and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also generally are made in quick release versions which use throw levers which permit rifle operators to quickly install and dismount the scope.

Hex Key Optic Rings

Basic, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to position to the flattop design Picatinny scope mounting rails on rifles. These kinds of scope mounts use two independent rings to support the scope, and are usually constructed from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are made for long distance precision shooting. This type of scope mount is exceptional for rifles which need a long lasting, unfailing mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved about or abuse the rifle takes. These are the design of mounts you should have for a faithful scope setup on a reach out and touch someone hunting or interdiction rifle which will rarely need to be altered or recalibrated. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can additionally be used on screws to protect against the hex screws from backing out after they are installed securely in place. An example of these mounting rings are the 30mm type from the Vortex Optics company. The set generally costs around $200 USD

Rifle Glass Mounting Solutions with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly connect and remove a scope from a rifle before reattaching it to a different rifle. Several scopes can even be swapped out if they all use a similar design mount. These types of mounts come in handy for rifle platforms which are carried a lot, to swap out the optic from the rifle for protecting the scope, or for scopes which are used in between numerous rifles or are situationally focused.

Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle optic can ruin a day of shooting and your highly-priced optic by inducing fogging and producing residue inside of the scope tube. The majority of optics prevent moisture from entering the optical tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Generally, these optics can be submerged within 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be sufficient moisture prevention for conventional use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you plan on taking your rifle sailing and are concerned about the scope still performing if it goes over the side and you can still salvage the rifle.

Gas Purged Rifle Glass Tubes

Another component of preventing the accumulation of moisture inside of the rifle optic’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Since this space is already taken up by the gas, the optic is less impacted by climate shifts and pressure distinctions from the external environment which might possibly permit water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
