What You Need to Know About Rifle Glass

Rifle scopes permit you to precisely align a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target over a distance. They accomplish this through magnifying the target by using a set of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adapted for consideration of varied natural aspects like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand precisely where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are seeing through the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Most modern-day rifle scopes have around 11 parts which are located inside and on the exterior of the scope body. These parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment dials, focus rings, and other parts. See all eleven parts of an optic.

The Styles of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” kind of scopes. The form of focal plane a scope has identifies where the reticle or crosshair is located in connection with the scopes zoom. It simply means the reticle is located behind or in front of the magnification lens of the optic. Considering the most suitable form of rifle glass depends upon what kind of hunting or shooting you plan on undertaking.

First Focal Plane Glass Details

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the magnification lens. This causes the reticle to increase in size based upon the amount of magnification being used. The result is that the reticle measurements are the same at the enhanced range as they are at the non amplified range. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards without “zoom” is still the exact same tick at one hundred yards by using 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes work for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where estimations are low
  • Experienced shooters who know their target “hold over” as well as “lead” correlations for their long guns
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is bigger and requires more visual eyesight room than a SFP reticle

About Second Focal Plane Optics

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) include the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick.

  • Far away kinds of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most shots occur within much shorter ranges and proximities
  • Shooters who select a clearer optic sight picture without room used up by the enlarged FFP reticle

Rifle Glass Zoom

The quantity of zoom a scope provides is identified by the size, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Single Power Lens Scopes

A single power rifle optic uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This means the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of optic can not fluctuate since it is fixed.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Optic Details

Variable power rifle scopes use variable power levels. The power adjustment is handled by using the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power Level and Range of Rifle Glass

Here are some suggested scope power settings and the ranges where they may be effectively used. High power scopes will not be as useful as lower powered scopes given that too much magnification can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The exact same idea applies to extended ranges where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

Lens Coating for Rifle Glass

All contemporary rifle glass lenses are covered. Lens coating can be a crucial element of a rifle’s setup when purchasing high end rifle optics and scope systems.

HD Versus ED Rifle Optic Lens Coatings

Some rifle glass manufacturers will also use “HD” or high-definition lense finishings that use different processes, polarizations, rare earth compounds, and components to extract numerous colors and viewable definition through lenses. This HD covering is commonly used with increased density lens glass which lowers light’s ability to refract through the lens glass. Some scope suppliers use “HD” to refer to “ED” signifying extra-low dispersion glass. ED handles how colors are represented on the chroma spectrum and the chromatic difference or aberration which is similarly called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration can be obvious over items with well defined shapes as light hits the item from specific angles.

Single Finish Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can also have different finishings used to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or covering used to them before they are used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope maker and how much you paid for it.

Some scope producers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” covered. Being “better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Rifle Glass Lens Hydrophobic Covering

Water on an optical lens does not support maintaining a clear sight picture through an optic in any way. Numerous top of the line and high-end scope manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this kind of treatment. It provides protection for the surface of the Steiner scope lens so the water particles can not bind to it or produce surface tension. The result is that the water beads slide off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Options for Mounting Rifle Scopes on Firearms

Installing options for scopes are available in a few options. There are the basic scope rings which are individually mounted to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different kinds of mounts also typically come in quick release variations which use toss levers which permit rifle shooters to rapidly install and remove the glass.

Glass Mounts with Hex Key Rings

Normal, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two separate rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is designed for long distance accuracy shooting. This type of scope install is excellent for rifles which require a long lasting, sound mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abused.

Rifle Glass Mounts with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly connect and take off a scope from a rifle. If they all use a comparable design mount, multiple scopes can often be switched out on the range. The quick detach design is CNC machined from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers connect firmly to a flat top style Picatinny rail. This allows the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, taken off of the rifle, and remounted while maintaining the original sighting settings. These types of mounts come in convenient for shooting platforms which are transported a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for sight systems which are adopted between several rifles. An example of this mount style is the 30mm mount from the Vortex Optics brand. It normally costs around $250 USD

Rifle Scope Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle optic can destroy a day of shooting and your expensive optic by bringing about fogging and producing residue inside of the scope tube. Most scopes prevent wetness from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

Gas Purged Rifle Optic Tubes

Another component of avoiding the accumulation of wetness inside of the rifle optic’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Considering that this area is already taken up by the gas, the scope is less influenced by temperature level shifts and pressure differences from the outside environment which may potentially permit water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
