Rifle Scope Info

Rifle scopes enable you to exactly aim a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target over a distance. They accomplish this through zoom by using a set of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be dialed in to take into account separate natural factors like wind speed and elevation decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand exactly where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are viewing via the optic as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. The majority of modern rifle scopes and optics have around 11 parts which are located inside and on the exterior of the scope. These scope parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage and elevation dials, objective focus rings, and other parts. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle optics.

About Rifle Optic Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Selecting the finest type of rifle glass is based around what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Glass Facts

Focal plane scopes (FFP) come with the reticle in front of the magnification lens. This causes the reticle to increase in size based upon the amount of zoom being used. The benefit is that the reticle measurements are the same at the amplified range as they are at the non magnified distance. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards with no “zoom” is still the same tick at 100 yards with 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away kinds of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where calculations are low
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their aim point “hold over” and “lead” ratios for their firearm
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and requires more visual sight room than a SFP reticle

About Second Focal Plane Scopes

Second focal plane optics (SFP) come with the reticle to the rear of the magnifying lens. This induces the reticle to stay at the exact same scale in connection with the quantity of magnification being used. The outcome is that the reticle dimensions adjust based upon the magnification applied to shoot over lengthier ranges considering that the markings represent distinct increments which can vary with the magnification. In the FFP illustration with the SFP optic, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These sorts of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Far away forms of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most shots happen within shorter ranges and spaces
  • Shooters who select a clearer optic sight picture with less space used up by the enlarged FFP reticle

Scope Magnification

The amount of magnification a scope offers is figured out by the size, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Single Power Lens Optics

A single power rifle scope will have a zoom number designator like 4×32. This means the zoom power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this type of optic can not fluctuate given that it is fixed.

Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Optics

Variable power rifle scopes use variable power levels. The power change is handled by the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Rifle Glass Power Level and Range Correlation

Here are some advised scope powers and the ranges where they may be effectively used. High power glass will not be as useful as lower magnification level scopes considering too much magnification can be a bad thing. The same idea applies to extended ranges where the shooter needs enough power to see exactly where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Lens Covering for Rifle Scopes

All current rifle glass lenses are coated. Lens coating is an important element of a shooting system when purchasing high end rifle optics and scope setups.

HD Versus ED Rifle Glass Lens Coatings

Some scope makers also use “HD” or high-definition lens coverings which use different methods, polarizations, chemicals, and components to draw out various colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating

Various optic lenses can also have various coatings used to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or coating used to them before they are used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less advantageous things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends on the scope manufacturer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope producers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” covered. Being “better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of materials used in constructing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Finishing for Rifle Optics

Water on a scope’s lens does not improve keeping a clear sight picture through an optic in any way. Many top of the line and premium optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic finishing. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this kind of treatment. It deals with the exterior surfaces of the Steiner glass lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or develop surface tension. The result is that the water beads move off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Optic Mounting Alternatives

Mounting approaches for scopes can be found in a few options. There are the basic scope rings which are individually mounted to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various kinds of mounts also typically come in quick release versions which use throw levers which permit rifle operators to quickly mount and remove the scopes.

Hex Key Rifle Glass Rings

Standard, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of different rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for long range accuracy shooting. This type of scope install is great for rifles which require a durable, sound mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Optic Mounting Solutions with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly remove a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Several scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a compatible design mount. These types of mounts are convenient for rifles which are transported a lot, to swap out the optic from the rifle for protecting the scope, or for optics which are used between multiple rifles.

Sealing and Gas Purging for Scope Tubes

Moisture inside your rifle optic can destroy a day of shooting and your costly optic by triggering fogging and producing residue inside of the scope tube. A lot of scopes prevent moisture from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

Optic Gas Purging

Another element of avoiding the buildup of wetness within the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this space is currently occupied by the gas, the optic is less influenced by temperature changes and pressure differences from the external environment which may potentially allow water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
