About Leupold
From humble immigrant beginnings, Leupold grew–based on a promise of quality–to become a classic American company. In 1907, Fred Leupold set up a one-man shop at 5th and Oak streets in Portland to repair surveying equipment. He was joined by his brother-in-law, Adam Voelpel, and later by inventor John Cyprian Stevens, and the foundations for a century of success were in place.
During Leupold’s second half-century, the company focused heavily on the sports optics business. Leupold’s presence in the hunting and shooting market expanded with innovative optics and features that are now legendary among hunters, shooters, and outdoors enthusiasts. Many of the industry’s standards–nitrogen waterproofing, the Duplex reticle, and more–were Leupold creations.

What You Need to Know About Scopes

Rifle scopes enable you to precisely align a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target over a distance. They do this through magnification by using a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted to account for numerous natural factors like wind and elevation increases or decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to help the shooter understand precisely where the bullet will land based upon the sight picture you are viewing through the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Many modern rifle scopes and optics have around 11 parts which are arranged internally and on the exterior of the optic. These scope parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage turrets, focus rings, and other parts. Learn about the eleven parts of glass.

Rifle Scope Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Selecting the optimal type of rifle optic is based on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Glass

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the zoom lens. These styles of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where computations are small
  • Experienced shooters who understand their aim point “hold over” plus “lead” equations for their rifles
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and takes up more visual eyesight space than a SFP reticle

Info About Second Focal Plane Glass

Second focal plane glass (SFP) include the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. This triggers the reticle to stay at the same size relative to the level of zoom being used. The result is that the reticle measurements adapt based upon the zoom chosen to shoot over greater ranges due to the fact that the markings present various increments which change with the zoom level. In the FFP illustration with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick. These particular types of glass are handy for:

  • Far away types of shooting where shooters have additional time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most shots take place within much shorter spaces and ranges
  • Shooters who prefer a clearer optic picture with less space taken up by the enlarged FFP reticle

About Rifle Glass Magnification

The quantity of zoom a scope offers is figured out by the size, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Single Power Lens Rifle Optic Details

A single power rifle scope or optic uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the magnification power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this type of scope can not adjust because it is a set power scope.

Adjustable Power Lens Optics

Variable power rifle scopes have adjustable power. It will note the magnification level in a format such as 2-10×32. These numbers suggest the magnification of the scope can be adjusted between 2x and 10x power. This additionally includes the powers in-between 2 and 10. The power shift is achieved by employing the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Rifle Optic Power and Range Correlation

Here are some suggested scope power levels and the distances where they can be successfully used. High power glass will not be as beneficial as lower magnification rifle scope glass considering that too much magnification can be a bad thing. The exact same idea relates to extended ranges where the shooter needs enough power to see exactly where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

About Rifle Scope Lens Coatings

All modern rifle scope lenses are covered in special coatings. There are various types and qualities of lens coverings. When considering high end rifle scope systems, Lens coating can be a significant element of defining the rifle’s capability. The glass lenses are among the most key pieces of the glass since they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the point of impact. The covering on the lenses shields the lens surface area as well as assists with anti glare capabilities from excess sunlight and color visibility.

Details on Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope brands likewise use “HD” or high-definition lens coatings which use various processes, polarizations, elements, and chemicals to draw out different colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope producers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass.

What to Know About Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can likewise have different finishings used to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or covering used to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is normally a protective and improving multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while reducing glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single layered lens depends upon the scope company and how much money you spent for it. Both are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope manufacturers also make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in building the rifle scope.

Scope Lens Hydrophobic Covering

Water on a scope’s lens doesn’t help with keeping a clear sight picture through an optic in any way. Lots of top of the line and premium optic manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic covering. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this kind of treatment. It provides protection for the surface of the Steiner optic lens so the H2O particles can not bind to it or develop surface tension. The result is that the water beads slide off of the scope to keep a clear, water free sight picture.

Choices for Installing Rifle Scopes on Firearms

Mounting solutions for scopes are available in a few options. There are the basic scope rings which are separately installed to the scope and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different types of mounts also usually can be found in quick release versions which use manual levers which allow rifle shooters to rapidly mount and remove the glass.

Hex Key Scope Ring Mounting Solutions

Standard, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of different rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are created for long range accuracy shooting. This type of scope install is fine for rifles which need a long lasting, sound mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Optic Mounting Solutions with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly remove a scope and connect it to a different rifle. Numerous scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a compatible style mount. These types of mounts come in handy for rifle platforms which are transported a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are used between numerous rifles.

Rifle Optic Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle glass can destroy a day on the range and your costly optic by resulting in fogging and making residue within the scope tube. Most scopes protect against moisture from entering the scope tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Generally, these water resistant scopes can be immersed within 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be sufficient moisture content avoidance for basic use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you plan on taking your rifle aboard watercrafts and are worried about the scope still performing if it is submerged in water and you can still recover the rifle.

Rifle Scope Gas Purging

Another element of preventing the buildup of moisture within the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this space is currently taken up by the gas, the optic is less altered by temperature level shifts and pressure distinctions from the outside environment which might potentially allow water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to look for.
