Rifle Scope Product Details

Kalinka Optics POSP 8×42 PRO, 1000m Rangefinder, SVD
POSP 8×42 PRO Rifle Scope 1000 Meter Rangefinder, SKS/SVD Version. The military reticles have an extremely effective and useful height-based rangefinder for dual use, with graduated scales for both standing and prone figure estimation. The 1000 meter Dragunov height based gradient (choke style) rangefinder has extended distance inverted chevrons providing aiming points for 1000, 1100, and 1200 meters. Since the range calibrations are measured in equal amounts of MOA, all versions of the POSP can be used effectively with any caliber of weapon. They are particularly effective for .308 caliber weapons which require longer range reticles to make full use of their capabilities. The POSP features a red illuminated reticle which allows you to make perfect kill shots in dusk conditions. POSP’s feature professionally ground, crystal clear optics, nitrogen filling to prevent lens fogging, and larger diameter tubes for improved light gathering under the most severe conditions. It is waterproof and can be used in any climate condition. It comes with a high quality mil-spec finish and rubber lens cap, eye piece, and nylon carrying case. The SVD/SKS clamp will fit any of these rifles with the standard side rail: SVD, SKS, NDM-96, Russian Tigr, Romak-3, SSG-97,PSL rifles and many more.

All About Rifle Glass

Rifle scopes allow you to precisely aim a rifle at different targets by lining up your eye with the target over a range. They do this through zoom by using a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adapted for the consideration of different natural factors like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to understand precisely where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are viewing using the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. The majority of contemporary rifle scopes and optics have about eleven parts which are located internally and on the exterior of the scope body. These scope parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, elevation dials, objective focus rings, and other components. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle scopes.

Rifle Optic Varieties

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” style of scopes. The style of focal plane an optic has decides where the reticle or crosshair lies relative to the scopes zoom. It simply means the reticle is located behind or in front of the magnification lens of the scope. Choosing the most effective kind of rifle scope is based upon what style of hunting or shooting you anticipate doing.

Info on First Focal Plane Optics

Focal plane scopes (FFP) come with the reticle in front of the magnifying lens. This causes the reticle to increase in size based on the amount of zoom being used. The benefit is that the reticle measurements are the same at the magnified distance as they are at the non amplified range. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at 100 yards without “zoom” is still the same tick at 100 yards with 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes work for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting situations where computations are minor
  • Experienced shooters who understand their target “hold over” and “lead” correlations for their long gun
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is bigger and takes up more visual sight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scopes

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) feature the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement.

  • Far away kinds of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most shots happen within much shorter ranges and spaces
  • Shooters who prefer a clearer optic sight picture without room used up by the enlarged FFP reticle

Rifle Glass Zoom

The amount of scope zoom you need on your optic depends upon the kind of shooting you like to do. Practically every kind of rifle glass delivers some level of zoom. The volume of zoom a scope supplies is determined by the dimension, density, and curves of the lenses within the rifle optic. The magnifying level of the optic is the “power” of the opic. This denotes what the shooter is observing through the scope is amplified times the power element of what can generally be seen by human eyes.

Fixed Single Power Lens Glass Info

A single power rifle scope or optic uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the magnification power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this type of scope can not fluctuate because it is a fixed power scope.

Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Optic Details

Variable power rifle scopes use variable power levels. The power modification is handled by making use of the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

Optic Power Level and Ranges

Here are some suggested scope powers and the distances where they may be effectively used. Highly magnified rifle scope glass will not be as beneficial as lower magnification optics because too much magnification can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The same idea applies to longer ranges where the shooter needs increased power to see precisely where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Rifle Scope Lens Finish

All modern-day rifle optic and scope lenses are covered in special coatings. There are various types and qualities of finishings. When researching luxury rifle targeting systems, Lens covering can be a vital aspect of defining the capability of the rifle. The glass lenses are among the most key pieces of the optic considering that they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The coating on the lenses shields the lens surface area and helps with anti glare capabilities from excess sunrays and color perception.

ED Versus HD Rifle Scopes

Some rifle scope producers also use “HD” or high-def lens finishes that take advantage of different processes, elements, polarizations, and chemical applications to draw out various colors and viewable target definition through lenses. This HD coating is often used with more costly high density glass which decreases light’s chance to refract by means of the lens glass. Some scope producers use “HD” to describe “ED” signifying extra-low dispersion glass. ED deals with how certain colors are presented on the chromatic spectrum and the chromatic deviance or aberration which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration may be noticeable over things with hard edges and outlines as light hits the item from specific angles.

Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating for Optics

Different optic lenses can also have different coatings applied to them. All lenses normally have at least some kind of treatment or finishing applied to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. This is since the lens isn’t simply a raw piece of glass. It becomes part of the finely tuned optic. It requires a coating to be applied to it so that it will be optimally usable in numerous types of environments, degrees of sunshine (full light VS shade), and other shooting conditions.

This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less advantageous things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope producer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope producers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are covered or “multi” covered. Being “much better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of materials used in constructing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Finishing for Rifle Scopes

Water on a lens does not assist with maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Lots of top of the line and high-end optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic anti-water coating.

Alternatives for Installing Scopes on Firearms

Mounting options for scopes can be found in a couple of options. There are the standard scope rings which are individually installed to the optic and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These various kinds of mounts also typically are made in quick release variations which use throw levers which enable rifle shooters to rapidly mount and dismount the scope.

Rifle Glass Mounts with Hex Key Rings

Standard, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two separate rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is developed for long range accuracy shooting. This type of scope mount is fine for rifles which need a long lasting, rock solid mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Scope Ring Mounting Solutions

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly remove a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Several scopes can even be switched out if they all use a similar style mount. These types of mounts are handy for rifle platforms which are transported a lot, to swap out the optic from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are used in between numerous rifles or are situationally focused.

Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle glass can ruin a day on the range and your pricey optic by resulting in fogging and making residue inside of the scope’s tube. The majority of optics protect against moisture from getting in the scope tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are water resistant. Generally, these optics can be immersed under 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be plenty of moisture content prevention for standard use rifles, unless you plan on taking your rifle on boats and are concerned about the optic still functioning if it falls overboard and you can still recover the rifle.

What to Know About Rifle Optic Tube Gas Purging

Another element of preventing the accumulation of moisture within the rifle scope’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this space is currently occupied by the gas, the scope is less impacted by temperature changes and pressure variations from the external environment which could potentially allow water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to look for.
