Rifle Scope Product Details

Kalinka Optics POSP 4×24 Rifle Scope, 400m Rangefinder, SVD
POSP 4×24 Rifle Scope w/ 400 Meter Rangefinder, SKS / SVD Version with built-in retractable sunshade. The military reticles have an extremely effective and useful height-based rangefinder for dual use, with graduated scales for both standing and prone figure estimation. The 400 meter Simonov height based gradient (choke style) rangefinder has holdover aiming marks for quick reaction shooting at 100 and 200 meters.Once the primary inverted chevron aiming mark is adjusted for zero at 100 meters, the lower chevron is bullet drop compensated for shots at 200 meters automatically. Since the range calibrations for both the AK and SVD versions on both the 1000 meter Dragunov and 400 meter Simonov models are measured in equal amounts of MOA, all versions of the POSP can be used effectively with any caliber of weapon. The POSP features a red illuminated reticle which allows you to make perfect kill shots in dusk conditions. Illumination is provided by a simple diode.POSP’s feature professionally ground, crystal clear optics, nitrogen filling to prevent lens fogging, and larger diameter tubes for improved light gathering under the most severe conditions.it is waterproof and can be used in any climate condition. It comes with a high quality mil-spec finish, and rubber lens cap, eye piece, and nylon carrying case. The SVD/SKS clamp will fit any of these rifles with the standard side rail: SVD, SKS, NDM-96, Russian Tigr, Romak-3, SSG-97,PSL rifles and many more.

Rifle Scope Information

Rifle scopes permit you to specifically aim a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target over a range. They accomplish this through zoom by utilizing a set of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s alignment can be dialed in to take into account separate environmental factors like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand exactly where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are seeing with the optic as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Most modern rifle scopes have around eleven parts which are found within and outside of the scope body. These optic pieces include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage and elevation dials or turrets, objective focus rings, and other elements. See all eleven parts of optics.

The Styles of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Finding the optimal type of rifle scope is based around what type of shooting you plan to do.

Info on First Focal Plane Scopes

Focal plane scopes (FFP) include the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These styles of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away types of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where computations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who understand their aim point “hold over” and also “lead” equations for their weapon
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and takes up more visual sight room than a SFP reticle

About Second Focal Plane Optics

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) feature the reticle behind the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick.

  • Long distance forms of shooting where shooters have more time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most of the shots take place within much shorter ranges and proximities
  • Shooters who would like a clearer optic sight picture with less area used up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Glass Magnification

The amount of scope zoom you need on your optic depends upon the type of shooting you like to do. Practically every kind of rifle optic provides some level of magnification. The volume of magnification a scope gives is established by the size, density, and curves of the lenses inside of the rifle optic. The magnification of the optic is the “power” of the glass. This denotes what the shooter is aiming at through the scope is magnified times the power element of what can generally be seen by human eyes.

About Fixed Power Lens Glass

A single power rifle scope or optic uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this kind of scope can not change because it is a fixed power optic.

Adjustable Power Lens Scope Details

Variable power rifle scopes use variable power levels. The power change is achieved by the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

Rifle Glass Power and Range Correlation

Here are some recommended scope powers and the distances where they can be successfully used. Highly magnified optics will not be as beneficial as lower magnification level scopes due to the fact that too much zoom can be a bad thing. The same idea goes for extended distances where the shooter needs to have adequate power to see exactly where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Lens Finish for Scopes

All modern rifle scope and optic lenses are covered. Lens coating can be a significant element of a shooting platform when looking at high end rifle optics and scope equipment.

HD Versus ED Rifle Optic Lens Coatings

Some scope brands also use “HD” or high-definition lens finishes which use different processes, elements, polarizations, and chemicals to draw out different colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope manufacturers use “HD” to refer to “ED” indicating extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating

Various optic lenses can even have various finishes applied to them. All lenses usually have at least some type of treatment or finish applied to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic. This is since the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass. It is part of the carefully tuned optic. It needs to have a covering put on it so that the lens will be efficiently usable in lots of kinds of environments, degrees of sunshine (full VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

Single coated lenses have a treatment applied to them which is generally a protective and boosting multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while reducing glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope producer and the amount you spent for it. Both the manufacturer and amount are indications of the lens quality.

Some scope manufacturers also make it a point to define if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. This indicates the lens has had several treatments applied to them. If a lens receives several treatments, it can establish that a maker is taking multiple actions to combat different natural aspects like an anti-glare coating, a scratch resistant anti-abrasion finish, followed by a hydrophilic finishing. This additionally doesn’t necessarily suggest the multi-coated lens is better than a single coated lens. Being “much better” hinges on the producer’s lens treatment solutions and the quality of glass used in constructing the rifle scope.

About Anti-water Coating

Water on a lens doesn’t assist with preserving a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Lots of top of the line and military grade scope companies will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic finish which is water repellent.

Options for Installing Rifle Optics on Firearms

Mounting approaches for scopes come in a couple of choices. There are the standard scope rings which are separately installed to the optic and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also typically can be found in quick release variations which use throw levers which permit rifle operators to rapidly install and dismount the glass.

Optic Mounting Solutions with Hex Key Rings

Normal, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of different rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for long distance accuracy shooting. This type of scope install is wonderful for rifles which require a resilient, sound mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abused.

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Glass Rings

These kinds of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly connect and detach a scope from a rifle. Multiple scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a complementary designed mount. The quick detach mount style is CNC machined from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers attach securely to a flat top type Picatinny rail. This permits the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted while maintaining the original sighting settings. These kinds of mounts are useful and practical for shooting platforms which are carried a lot, to take off the scope from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are adopted between numerous rifles. An example of this mount style is the 30mm mount from the Vortex Optics manufacturer. It typically costs around $250 USD

Rifle Optic Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle glass can spoil a day on the range and your pricey optic by causing fogging and making residue inside of the scope’s tube. Many scopes protect against humidity from getting in the scope tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Generally, these scopes can be submerged beneath 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be sufficient moisture avoidance for standard use rifles, unless you anticipate taking your rifle on a boat and are concerned about the optic still functioning if it is submerged in water and you can still salvage the gun.

What to Know About Rifle Glass Tube Gas Purging

Another part of avoiding the buildup of wetness within the rifle scope’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this area is already occupied by the gas, the scope is less altered by temp shifts and pressure differences from the outdoor environment which may potentially enable water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to seek out.
