What You Need to Know About Glass

Rifle scopes enable you to exactly aim a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target over a range. They do this through magnifying the target by utilizing a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted for the consideration of numerous environmental elements like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to help the shooter understand exactly where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are seeing with the optic as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended point of impact. Many modern-day rifle scopes and optics have around eleven parts which are found within and externally on the scope body. These scope parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage and elevation turrets or dials, focus rings, and other parts. See all eleven parts of a rifle scope.

Rifle Scope Varieties

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Finding the best type of rifle glass is based around what type of shooting you plan to do.

First Focal Plane Optic Facts

First focal plane optics (FFP) include the reticle ahead of the zoom lens. This triggers the reticle to increase in size based upon the amount of magnification being used. The outcome is that the reticle measurements are the same at the magnified distance as they are at the non magnified range. For example, one tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards without “zoom” is still the very same tick at 100 yards using 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes work for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their aim point “hold over” and “lead” equations for their rifles
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and requires more visual eyesight room than a SFP reticle

Info About Second Focal Plane Optics

Second focal plane glass (SFP) feature the reticle behind the magnification lens. This induces the reticle to stay at the same size in connection with the amount of zoom being used. The end result is that the reticle measurements shift based on the magnification employed to shoot over greater distances because the reticle measurements present various increments which can vary with the magnification level. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These particular varieties of optics are convenient for:

  • Far away types of shooting where shooters have additional time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most shots occur within shorter distances and ranges
  • Shooters who want a clearer optic sight picture without room used up by the larger size FFP reticle

Ins and Outs of Rifle Scope Magnification

The quantity of zoom a scope provides is figured out by the diameter, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Single Power Lens Rifle Scopes

A single power rifle scope and optic will have a zoom number designator like 4×32. This means the magnification power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of optic can not fluctuate given that it is a set power scope.

Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Glass Facts

Variable power rifle scopes use enhanced power. The power modification is performed by making use of the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power Level and Range Correlation of Rifle Scopes

Here are some advised scope power settings and the ranges where they may be efficiently used. Always remember that higher power glass will not be as practical as lower powered scopes due to the fact that excessive zoom can be a detractor. The same relates to extended distances where the shooter needs to have enough power to see precisely where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

Info on Lens Finishing

All top of the line rifle optic lenses are layered. Lens coating can be a crucial aspect of a rifle’s setup when looking into high end rifle optics and scope systems.

HD Versus ED Lens Coatings

Some glass manufacturers even use “HD” or high-definition lense coatings that make the most of different procedures, chemicals, elements, and polarizations to draw out numerous color ranges and viewable target definition through lenses. This HD coating is frequently used with increased density lens glass which drops light’s chance to refract through the lens glass. Some scope producers use “HD” to describe “ED” indicating extra-low dispersion glass. ED handles how colors are represented on the chromatic spectrum and the chromatic aberration or difference which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration can be obvious over objects with hard outlines as light hits the object from particular angles.

Rifle Glass Lens Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating

Various scope lenses can even have different finishes applied to them. All lenses generally have at least some type of treatment or finish applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic. Because the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It is part of the finely tuned optic. It must have a coating placed on it so that the lens will be optimally functional in many kinds of environments, degrees of sunlight (full light VS shade), and other shooting conditions.

Single covered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is usually a protective and boosting multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less helpful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends upon the scope designer and the amount you spent for it. Both are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope manufacturers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are covered or “multi” covered. Being “better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of materials used in building the rifle scope.

Rifle Optic Lens Hydrophobic Covering

Water on a scope lens doesn’t help with preserving a clear sight picture through an optic in any way. Numerous top of the line and high-end scope makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic covering. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this type of treatment. It provides protection for the exterior of the Steiner optic lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or produce surface tension. The result is that the water beads sheet off of the scope to maintain a clear, water free sight picture.

Scope Mounting Choices

Installing solutions for scopes can be found in a couple of options. There are the standard scope rings which are individually installed to the scope and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also normally are made in quick release versions which use throw levers which permit rifle shooters to rapidly install and dismount the glass.

Glass Mounting Solutions with Hex Key Rings

Standard, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of different rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for long distance precision shooting. This type of scope mount is perfect for rifles which need a resilient, sound mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Glass Ring Mounts

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly remove a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Multiple scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a compatible style mount. These types of mounts come in handy for rifle platforms which are transported a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for scopes which are used in between numerous rifles or are situationally focused.

Sealing and Gas Purging for Rifle Scope Tubes

Wetness inside your rifle optic can ruin a day of shooting and your costly optic by triggering fogging and developing residue inside of the scope tube. Many scopes prevent moisture from going into the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

Rifle Scope Gas Purging

Another component of preventing the accumulation of moisture inside of the rifle scope’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Since this area is already taken up by the gas, the scope is less impacted by condition alterations and pressure distinctions from the outdoor environment which might potentially permit water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to look for.
