What You Need to Know About Scopes

Rifle scopes permit you to exactly aim a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They do this through magnification using a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adjusted for the consideration of varied ecological aspects like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand precisely where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are seeing through the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Most contemporary rifle scopes and optics have around 11 parts which are found inside and externally on the optic. These parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, elevation turrets or dials, focus rings, and other parts. See all eleven parts of a scope.

About Optic Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. The sort of focal plane an optic has identifies where the reticle or crosshair lies in connection with the optic’s zoom. It simply means the reticle is located behind or ahead of the magnifying lens of the optic. Choosing the most reliable style of rifle scope depends upon what kind of shooting or hunting you intend on doing.

About First Focal Plane Optics

Focal plane scopes (FFP) include the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These styles of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting situations where computations are low
  • Experienced shooters who have an idea for their target “hold over” as well as “lead” ratios for their rifles
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is enlarged and uses up more visual eyesight space than a SFP reticle

About Second Focal Plane Glass

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) feature the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement.

  • Far away forms of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most of the shots happen within shorter spaces and ranges
  • Shooters who desire a clearer optic sight picture with less area taken up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Zoom for Scopes

The amount of zoom a scope supplies is determined by the size, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Fixed Power Lens Optic Facts

A single power rifle scope or optic uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of optic can not adjust because it is fixed.

Adjustable Power Lens Scopes

Variable power rifle scopes can be modified between magnified settings. The power adjustment is handled using the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

Power and Range Correlations

Here are some suggested scope powers and the distances where they may be efficiently used. Highly magnified rifle scope glass will not be as efficient as lower magnification scopes because too much magnification can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The exact same idea applies to extended ranges where the shooter needs to have adequate power to see precisely where to properly aim the rifle.

Glass Lens Finish

All modern rifle optic and scope lenses are covered in special coatings. There are different types and qualities of finishes. When shopping for high end rifle targeting setups, Lens coating can be a very important component of defining the capability of the rifle. The lenses are among the most important pieces of the glass given that they are what your eye sees through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The finish on the lenses shields the lens surface area and even assists with anti glare capabilities from excess light and color presence.

HD Versus ED Lenses

Some scope makers also use “HD” or high-definition lens finishes which use different techniques, aspects, chemicals, and polarizations to draw out various colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope manufacturers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass.

About Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating

Various optic lenses can likewise have various coverings applied to them. All lenses usually have at least some type of treatment or covering used to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is typically a protective and enhancing multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can preserve the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less advantageous things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single layered lens depends upon the scope designer and how much money you paid for it. Both the manufacturer and amount are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope makers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Rifle Optic Lens Hydrophobic Coating

Water on a lens does not improve preserving a clear sight picture through an optic at all. Lots of top of the line and high-end optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic covering. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this sort of treatment. It provides protection for the exterior of the Steiner optic lens so the water particles can not bind to it or create surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads move off of the scope to maintain a clear, water free sight picture.

Options for Installing Rifle Scopes on Long Guns

Installing options for scopes can be found in a couple of options. There are the standard scope rings which are individually mounted to the scope and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also usually can be found in quick release versions which use toss levers which permit rifle operators to quickly mount and remove the glass.

Hex Key Rifle Optic Rings

Standard, clamp type mounting scope rings use hex head screws to position to the flattop style Picatinny scope mounting rails on the tops of rifles. These styles of scope mounts use a pair of individual rings to support the optic, and are usually constructed from 7075 T6 billet aluminum or similar materials which are made for long distance accuracy shooting. This form of scope mount is excellent for rifle systems which require a durable, unfailing mount which will not move no matter just how much the scope is moved about or jarring the rifle takes. These are the style of mounts you should get for a dedicated optics setup on a reach out and touch someone hunting or tournament rifle that will rarely need to be changed or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can additionally be used on the mount screws to prevent the hex screws from backing out after they are mounted tightly in place. An example of these mounting rings are the 30mm type from the Vortex Optics brand. The set normally costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Scope Ring Mounting Solutions

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly detach a scope and connect it to a different rifle. Several scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a compatible style mount. These types of mounts are handy for long guns which are carried a lot, to swap out the optic from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are used between multiple rifles or are situationally focused.

Sealing and Gas Purging for Rifle Scope Tubes

Moisture inside your rifle scope can wreck a day of shooting and your costly optic by triggering fogging and creating residue within the scope’s tube. Many scopes prevent humidity from getting in the optical tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Usually, these water resistant optics can be submerged under 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be ample moisture avoidance for conventional use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you plan on taking your rifle aboard a watercraft and are worried about the optic still functioning if it is submerged in water and you can still retrieve the gun.

Rifle Optic Gas Purging

Another element of preventing the buildup of moisture within the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Since this area is already occupied by the gas, the glass is less influenced by temperature level changes and pressure differences from the external environment which might possibly allow water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to look for.
