Scope Facts

Rifle scopes permit you to exactly aim a rifle at different targets by lining up your eye with the target at range. They accomplish this through magnifying the target using a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adapted for consideration of different ecological aspects like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help the shooter understand exactly where the bullet will land based upon the sight picture you are seeing using the optic as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. The majority of modern-day rifle scopes have about eleven parts which are located within and outside of the optic. These scope parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, elevation dials, objective focus rings, and other components. Learn about the eleven parts of scopes.

About Scope Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” style of scopes. The type of focal plane a scope has determines where the reticle or crosshair lies relative to the optic’s magnification. It literally means the reticle is located behind or in front of the magnifying lens of the scope. Selecting the most beneficial kind of rifle glass is dependent on what sort of hunting or shooting you anticipate undertaking.

Info About First Focal Plane Optics

Focal plane scopes (FFP) include the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These kinds of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are low
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their target “hold over” and “lead” equations for their long gun
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and takes up more visual eyesight room than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scope Details

Second focal plane glass (SFP) come with the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. This causes the reticle to remain at the exact same overall size in connection with the quantity of magnification being used. The result is that the reticle dimensions adjust based on the magnification applied to shoot over longer distances due to the fact that the reticle markings present different increments which can vary with the magnification. In the FFP illustration with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These particular styles of scopes work for:

  • Long distance styles of shooting where shooters have additional time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most shots take place within much shorter proximities and ranges
  • Shooters who prefer a clearer optic sight picture without room taken up by the larger size FFP reticle

Zoom for Glass

The quantity of scope magnification you need on your scope is based on the sort of shooting you like to do. Pretty much every style of rifle optic provides some degree of magnification. The quantity of zoom a scope delivers is determined by the size, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle optic. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the glass. This suggests what the shooter is checking out through the scope is magnified times the power factor of what can generally be seen by human eyes.

About Fixed Single Power Lens Optics

A single power rifle optic or scope uses a magnification number designator like 4×32. This means the zoom power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of scope can not fluctuate given that it is fixed.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Glass

Variable power rifle scopes have adjustable power. It will list the magnification level in a configuration such as 2-10×32. These numbers suggest the zoom of the scope can be adjusted between 2x and 10x power. This always incorporates the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power manipulation is achieved by applying the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Optic Power and Range Correlation

Here are some suggested scope power levels and the distances where they may be effectively used. High power scopes will not be as beneficial as lower magnification rifle scope glass considering that too much magnification can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The same applies to longer ranges where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see where to best aim the rifle.

Details on Lens Finishing

All cutting-edge rifle optic lenses are layered. Lens finish can be a vital aspect of a shooting system when looking into high end rifle optics and scope systems.

Details on Optic Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope producers also use “HD” or high-definition lens finishes which use different techniques, components, chemicals, and polarizations to draw out separate colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope manufacturers use “HD” to refer to “ED” meaning extra-low dispersion glass.

Glass Lens Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can also have different coatings applied to them. All lenses generally have at least some type of treatment or finish applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. Since the lens isn’t simply a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It becomes part of the carefully tuned optic. It requires a coating to be applied to it so that it will be optimally functional in lots of types of environments, degrees of sunshine (full VS shade), and other shooting conditions.

Single coated lenses have a treatment applied to them which is usually a protective and improving multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while decreasing glare and other less helpful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope developer and just how much you spent paying for it. Both the manufacturer and amount are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope makers likewise make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. This indicates the lens has multiple treatments applied to the surfaces. If a lens receives several treatments, it can establish that a manufacturer is taking multiple steps to fight various natural aspects like an anti-glare finishing, a scratch resistant anti-abrasion covering, followed by a hydrophilic coating. This also does not necessarily suggest the multi-coated lens is better than a single coated lens. Being “better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Finishing for Rifle Glass

Water on a lens doesn’t assist with preserving a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Numerous top of the line and military grade scope makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating which is water repellent.

Rifle Optic Installation Alternatives

Mounting solutions for scopes are available in a couple of choices. There are the basic scope rings which are separately installed to the scope and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These different kinds of mounts also normally can be found in quick release variations which use throw levers which enable rifle operators to rapidly mount and remove the scope.

Hex Key Rifle Scope Ring Mounts

Normal, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of separate rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are developed for long range accuracy shooting. This type of scope mount is excellent for rifles which need a long lasting, sound mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Rifle Optic Mounting Solutions with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly attach and remove a scope from a rifle. Several scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a complementary style mount. The quick detach mount style is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers connect nicely to a flat top style Picatinny rail. This lets the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, taken off of the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while retaining the original sighting settings. These kinds of mounts come in beneficial for shooting platforms which are transferred between vehicles a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for aiming systems which are employed between a number of rifles. An example of this mount type is the 30mm mount from Vortex Optics. It typically costs around $250 USD

Details on Rifle Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle optic can ruin a day of shooting and your expensive optic by triggering fogging and producing residue inside of the scope tube. The majority of scopes avoid moisture from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

Glass Gas Purging

Another component of avoiding the accumulation of wetness within the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this space is already occupied by the gas, the optic is less influenced by temp shifts and pressure distinctions from the external environment which could possibly enable water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to look for.
