All About Glass

Rifle scopes enable you to precisely align a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target at range. They do this through magnifying the target using a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted to account for different ecological elements like wind speed and elevation decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand exactly where the bullet will land based upon the sight picture you are viewing via the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. A lot of modern-day rifle scopes have about 11 parts which are found internally and outside of the scope body. These scope parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment turrets or dials, focus rings, and other components. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle optics.

The Types of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Going for the optimal type of rifle glass is based around what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Glass

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the zoom lens. This triggers the reticle to increase in size based upon the extent of magnification being used. The benefit is that the reticle measurements are the same at the amplified range as they are at the non amplified range. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards with no “zoom” is still the same tick at 100 yards by using 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes work for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are minimal
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their target “hold over” and also “lead” relationships for their long guns
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is enlarged and requires more visual eyesight space than a SFP reticle

About Second Focal Plane Scopes

Second focal plane optics (SFP) include the reticle behind the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement.

  • Long distance styles of shooting where shooters have more time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most shots occur within shorter proximities and ranges
  • Shooters who would like a clearer optic sight picture without area taken up by the enlarged FFP reticle

Optic Magnification

The level of scope magnification you need on your optic is based on the type of shooting you desire to do. Almost every style of rifle optic supplies some degree of magnification. The level of magnification a scope offers is identified by the dimension, density, and curvatures of the lens glass within the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope. This implies what the shooter is looking at through the scope is magnified times the power factor of what can normally be seen by human eyes.

Info About Fixed Single Power Lens Scopes

A single power rifle scope will have a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of scope can not change because it is set from the factory.

Variable Power Lens Glass Facts

Variable power rifle scopes can be adjusted between magnification levels. It will note the zoom degree in a configuration like 2-10×32. These numbers imply the magnification of the scope can be set between 2x and 10x power. This always involves the powers in-between 2 and 10. The power manipulation is achieved by applying the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell piece.

Power and Range Correlations

Here are some suggested scope powers and the distances where they may be effectively used. Bear in mind that higher magnification optics and scopes will not be as efficient as lower magnification level scopes since increased magnification can be a detractor. The very same idea applies to longer ranges where the shooter needs sufficient power to see where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Lens Finishing for Rifle Glass

All modern-day rifle optic and scope lenses are layered. There are various types and qualities of glass lens finishings. Lens covering can be an important element of a rifle when looking at high end rifle optics and targeting equipment. The glass lenses are one of the most important components of the glass due to the fact that they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the point of impact. The coating on the lenses shields the lens surface area and improves anti glare capabilities from refracted natural light and color visibility.

Details on Rifle Scope Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope brands also use “HD” or high-definition lens finishes which use various techniques, polarizations, chemicals, and elements to draw out different colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope manufacturers use “HD” to refer to “ED” to signify the lens has extra-low dispersion glass.

What to Know About Single Finish Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can likewise have different coverings used to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or covering applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single covered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is typically a protective and enhancing multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can preserve the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope designer and the amount you spent for it. Both the manufacturer and amount are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope makers also make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” covered. This suggests the lens has numerous treatments applied to the surfaces. If a lens gets multiple treatments, it can indicate that a manufacturer is taking several actions to combat different environmental aspects like an anti-glare finishing, a scratch resistant anti-abrasion finish, followed by a hydrophilic coating. This also doesn’t always suggest the multi-coated lens will perform better than a single coated lens. Being “much better” is dependent on the producer’s lens treatment techniques and the quality of glass used in building the rifle glass.

Anti-water Lens Finishes

Water on a lens does not help with keeping a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Lots of top of the line and military grade optic companies will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic anti-water covering.

Options for Installing Rifle Scopes on Long Guns

Mounting solutions for scopes come in a few choices. There are the standard scope rings which are individually mounted to the scope and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These different types of mounts also generally come in quick release variations which use manual levers which permit rifle operators to quickly mount and remove the scopes.

Optic Mounting Solutions with Hex Key Rings

Normal, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of different rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are developed for long distance precision shooting. This type of scope install is fine for rifles which need a resilient, sound mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abused.

Quick-Release Cantilever Scope Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly detach a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. If they all use a comparable design mount, a number of scopes can often be switched on the range. The quick detach design is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers connect nicely to a flat top design Picatinny rail. This permits the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted while keeping precision. These kinds of mounts come in beneficial for shooting platforms which are moved around a lot, to take off the scope from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are utilized in between numerous rifles. An example of this mount style is the 30mm mount designed by Vortex Optics. It generally costs around $250 USD

Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle glass can wreck a day of shooting and your expensive optic by triggering fogging and making residue within the scope’s tube. The majority of optics prevent wetness from getting in the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant. Usually, these optics can be submerged underneath 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be more than enough moisture avoidance for conventional use rifles, unless you anticipate taking your rifle sailing and are worried about the scope still working if it is submerged in water and you can still recover the firearm.

Gas Purged Optic Tubes

Another part of avoiding the buildup of wetness within the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Since this space is currently taken up by the gas, the glass is less influenced by climate alterations and pressure distinctions from the outdoor environment which may possibly allow water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
