Rifle Scope Details

Rifle scopes allow you to precisely align a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target over a distance. They accomplish this through zoom by using a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be dialed in to take into account separate natural elements like wind speed and elevation increases or decreases to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help the shooter understand exactly where the bullet will hit based on the sight picture you are viewing with the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. Most modern rifle optics have around 11 parts which are located within and outside of the scope. These scope parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment dials, focus rings, and other components. See all eleven parts of a rifle optical system.

Rifle Scope Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Choosing the perfect type of rifle scope is based around what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Optics

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These kinds of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are very little
  • Experienced shooters who have an idea for their aim point “hold over” and “lead” correlations for their long gun
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is enlarged and requires more visual sight area than a SFP reticle

About Second Focal Plane Optics

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) include the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. This induces the reticle to stay at the very same scale in relation to the amount of magnification being used. The outcome is that the reticle measurements adapt based on the zoom used to shoot over lengthier ranges considering that the reticle markings present different increments which fluctuate with the zoom. In the FFP example with the SFP optic, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement. These particular sorts of scopes work for:

  • Long distance types of shooting where shooters have extra time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most of the shots occur within shorter ranges and spaces
  • Shooters who prefer a clearer optic sight picture without area used up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Scope Magnification

The extent of scope magnification you require depends upon the style of shooting you desire to do. Virtually every type of rifle scope provides some level of magnification. The quantity of magnification a scope delivers is identified by the dimension, density, and curves of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the optic is the “power” of the opic. This suggests what the shooter is aiming at through the scope is magnified times the power aspect of what can usually be seen by human eyes.

Fixed Single Power Lens Rifle Glass Details

A single power rifle optic and scope comes with a magnification number designator like 4×32. This means the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of scope can not fluctuate since it is fixed.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Scope Info

Variable power rifle scopes use enhanced power. The power modification is accomplished by using the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power and Range Correlation of Rifle Scopes

Here are some suggested scope powers and the ranges where they may be efficiently used. Highly magnified optics will not be as effective as lower powered glass due to the fact that too much zoom can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The same concept goes for extended ranges where the shooter needs sufficient power to see precisely where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

Rifle Optic Lens Covering

All contemporary rifle optic lenses are covered in special coatings. There are different types and qualities of lens coverings. Lens coating is a crucial aspect of a rifle’s setup when looking at high end rifle optics and targeting equipment. The lenses are one of the most key pieces of the scope considering they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The finishing on the lenses offers protection to the lens surface and even assists with anti glare from excess sunlight and color exposure.

Info on Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some rifle glass makers also use “HD” or high-definition glass finishings that make the most of various procedures, polarizations, components, and chemicals to draw out numerous color ranges and viewable target definition through the lens. This high-def covering is normally used with greater density lens glass which reduces light’s ability to refract by means of the lens glass. Some scope corporations use “HD” to refer to “ED” signifying extra-low dispersion glass. ED deals with how colors are represented on the chroma spectrum and the chromatic aberration or deviance which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration is often noticeable over items with well defined outlines as light hits the item from certain angles.

Info on Single Finishing Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can also have different finishes applied to them. All lenses typically have at least some type of treatment or finishing used to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is typically a protective and improving multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single covered lens depends on the scope company and how much you spent for it. Both are indications of the lens quality.

Some scope makers also make it a point to define if their optic lenses are covered or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of materials used in developing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Lens Coatings

Water on a scope’s lens doesn’t support maintaining a clear sight picture through an optic at all. Many top of the line or premium scope manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic covering. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this sort of treatment. It deals with the surface of the Steiner scope lens so the water particles can not bind to it or create surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads move off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Alternatives for Installing Glass on Long Guns

Installing options for scopes are available in a few choices. There are the basic scope rings which are separately mounted to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different types of mounts also typically come in quick release versions which use toss levers which allow rifle shooters to rapidly install and remove the glass.

Hex Key Scope Ring Mounts

Normal, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two separate rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is designed for long range accuracy shooting. This type of scope mount is fine for rifles which need a long lasting, sound mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Optic Ring Mounting Solutions

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly take off a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. If they all use a comparable design mount, multiple scopes can also be swapped out on the range. The quick detach design is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers connect solidly to a flat top design Picatinny rail. This enables the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted while keeping the original sighting settings. These types of mounts are useful and practical for shooting platforms which are transferred between vehicles a lot, to take off the glass from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are utilized in between a number of rifles. An example of this mount type is the 30mm mount designed by Vortex Optics. It typically costs around $250 USD

Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Wetness inside your rifle optic can destroy a day of shooting and your expensive optic by bringing about fogging and creating residue inside of the scope tube. Most scopes avoid wetness from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof.

Rifle Scope Gas Purging

Another component of avoiding the buildup of moisture inside of the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Considering that this space is currently taken up by the gas, the scope is less affected by temp shifts and pressure differences from the outside environment which may potentially enable water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
