Scope Facts

Rifle scopes permit you to specifically aim a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target at range. They accomplish this through zoom by using a set of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted for the consideration of many environmental things like wind and elevation to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to help the shooter understand exactly where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are seeing via the optic as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. The majority of modern rifle scopes and optics have around eleven parts which are located inside and outside of the scope body. These parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment turrets or dials, focus rings, and other components. See all eleven parts of a scope.

The Varieties of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Finding the optimal type of rifle scope is based around what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Glass

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These types of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where estimations are small
  • Experienced shooters who have an idea for their target “hold over” and also “lead” correlations for their rifles
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and uses up more visual sight room than a SFP reticle

About Second Focal Plane Glass

Second focal plane glass (SFP) come with the reticle behind the zoom lens. This induces the reticle to remain at the very same size relative to the quantity of zoom being used. The final result is that the reticle dimensions change based on the magnification used to shoot over greater ranges due to the fact that the markings present distinct increments which vary with the magnification level. In the FFP example with the SFP optic, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These particular styles of scopes work for:

  • Long distance kinds of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most of the shots happen within shorter ranges and proximities
  • Shooters who would like a clearer optic picture without room taken up by the enlarged FFP reticle

Rifle Glass Zoom

The quantity of scope magnification you need on your glass is based on the style of shooting you would like to do. Nearly every style of rifle glass provides some amount of zoom. The quantity of magnification a scope offers is established by the diameter, density, and curves of the lens glass inside of the rifle optic. The zoom of the optic is the “power” of the opic. This suggests what the shooter is looking at through the scope is amplified times the power aspect of what can generally be seen by human eyes.

Info on Fixed Single Power Lens Rifle Glass

A single power rifle optic will have a magnification number designator like 4×32. This indicates the magnification power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this type of scope can not fluctuate since it is a set power scope.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Scopes

Variable power rifle scopes can be changed between magnification increments. It will list the zoom amount in a format like 2-10×32. These numbers indicate the zoom of the scope could be set between 2x and 10x power. This always includes the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power shift is accomplished using the power ring component of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

Rifle Glass Power Level and Range Correlation

Here are some suggested scope power levels and the distances where they could be effectively used. Consider that higher power scopes will not be as effective as lower magnification level scopes since too much magnification can be a detractor. The same concept goes for longer ranges where the shooter needs increased power to see precisely where to best aim the rifle.

Details on Lens Coating

All present day rifle glass lenses are layered. Lens covering can be an important element of a rifle’s setup when looking into high end rifle optics and scope equipment.

About Rifle Optic Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope makers also use “HD” or high-definition lens finishes which use different methods, components, chemicals, and polarizations to draw out various colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope producers use “HD” to refer to “ED” indicating extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Finishing Versus Multi-Coating for Scopes

Different optic lenses can even have various finishes applied to them. All lenses normally have at least some kind of treatment or finish applied to them before they are used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. This is because the lens isn’t simply a raw piece of glass. It becomes part of the carefully tuned optic. It requires a coating to be applied to it so that it will be efficiently usable in numerous types of environments, degrees of light (full light VS shade), and other shooting conditions.

This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while reducing glare and other less helpful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single covered lens depends on the scope producer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope makers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” covered. Being “better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in constructing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Lens Coverings

Water on a scope’s lens doesn’t improve preserving a clear sight picture through an optic in any way. Numerous top of the line and high-end scope manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic finish. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this sort of treatment. It deals with the surface area of the Steiner glass lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or develop surface tension. The result is that the water beads slide off of the scope to maintain a clear, water free sight picture.

Glass Mounting Alternatives

Mounting solutions for scopes come in a few options. There are the basic scope rings which are separately installed to the scope and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These different kinds of mounts also normally come in quick release versions which use throw levers which enable rifle operators to rapidly mount and dismount the glass.

Rifle Glass Mounting Solutions with Hex Key Rings

Normal, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of separate rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is created for long distance accuracy shooting. This type of scope install is great for rifles which need a resilient, sound mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abused.

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Glass Ring Mounting Solutions

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly detach a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. If they all use a similar style mount, a number of scopes can also be swapped out in the field. The quick detach mount style is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers connect solidly to a flat top type Picatinny rail. This permits the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, taken off of the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while retaining precision. These kinds of mounts are useful and convenient for rifles which are transferred a lot, to remove the scope glass from the rifle for protection, or for sight systems which are chosen for use between a number of rifles. An example of this mount type is the 30mm mount designed by Vortex Optics. It normally costs around $250 USD

What to Know About Rifle Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Wetness inside your rifle scope can destroy a day of shooting and your expensive optic by bringing about fogging and creating residue inside of the scope tube. The majority of scopes prevent moisture from getting in the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof.

Rifle Scope Gas Purging

Another part of preventing the buildup of wetness within the rifle optic’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Considering that this area is currently taken up by the gas, the optic is less influenced by climate shifts and pressure variations from the outdoor environment which may possibly enable water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to seek out.
