Rifle Optic Information

Rifle scopes allow you to exactly aim a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target over a range. They accomplish this through magnification using a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted to account for separate environmental considerations like wind speed and elevation to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to understand exactly where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are viewing using the optic as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. Most modern rifle scopes and optics have around eleven parts which are arranged internally and outside of the optic. These optic pieces consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment turrets, objective focus rings, and other components. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle scopes.

The Types of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Picking the optimal type of rifle glass depends on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

Info About First Focal Plane Scopes

Focal plane scopes (FFP) come with the reticle in front of the zoom lens. This triggers the reticle to increase in size based upon the extent of magnification being used. The result is that the reticle measurements are the same at the amplified distance as they are at the non amplified distance. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards with no “zoom” is still the exact same tick at one hundred yards with 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes are valuable for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away kinds of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where computations are minor
  • Experienced shooters who have an idea for their target “hold over” as well as “lead” equations for their long guns
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and uses up more visual sight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Glass Info

Second focal plane optics (SFP) come with the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement.

  • Far away kinds of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most shots occur within much shorter ranges and distances
  • Shooters who choose a clearer optic picture without room taken up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Ins and Outs of Scope Magnification

The level of scope magnification you need on your glass depends upon the style of shooting you plan to do. Almost every kind of rifle glass delivers some amount of magnification. The volume of zoom a scope provides is determined by the diameter, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle optic. The magnifying level of the optic is the “power” of the scope. This signifies what the shooter is aiming at through the scope is amplified times the power factor of what can normally be seen by human eyes.

About Single Power Lens Scopes

A single power rifle scope uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this kind of optic can not fluctuate since it is a fixed power scope.

Variable Power Lens Optics

Variable power rifle scopes have adjustable power. These types of scopes will note the zoom amount in a format like 2-10×32. These numbers suggest the magnification of the scope can be adjusted in between 2x and 10x power. This always utilizes the powers in-between 2 and 10. The power manipulation is accomplished by applying the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Scope Power and Range Correlation

Here are some recommended scope power levels and the distances where they may be successfully used. Highly magnified optics will not be as beneficial as lower magnification optics because too much zoom can be a bad thing. The exact same concept applies to extended distances where the shooter needs enough power to see exactly where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

Glass Lens Coating

All modern rifle optic lenses are coated. Lens finish can be a significant aspect of a rifle when buying high end rifle optics and scope setups.

HD Versus ED Lenses

Some optic makers will also use “HD” or high-definition lense finishes which apply various procedures, chemicals, polarizations, and elements to draw out a wide range of color ranges and viewable definition through lenses. This HD finishing is frequently used with increased density glass which brings down light’s potential to refract through the lens glass. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass. ED handles how colors are represented on the chroma spectrum and the chromatic aberration or difference which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration is often obvious around things with hard edges and outlines as light hits the object from various angles.

What to Know About Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating

Various optic lenses can also have various finishes applied to them. All lenses generally have at least some type of treatment or finish used to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is typically a protective and boosting multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends upon the scope developer and how much money you spent paying for it. Both the manufacturer and amount are signs of the lens quality.

Some scope producers also make it a point to define if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the manufacturer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of materials used in developing the rifle scope.

Scope Lens Hydrophobic Covering

Water on a scope’s lens doesn’t improve preserving a clear sight picture through an optic at all. Lots of top of the line or high-end optic manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic finishing. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this type of treatment. It provides protection for the exterior of the Steiner optic lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or develop surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads sheet off of the scope to maintain a clear, water free sight picture.

Choices for Installing Rifle Scopes on Firearms

Installing approaches for scopes come in a few options. There are the standard scope rings which are individually mounted to the scope and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different kinds of mounts also normally can be found in quick release variations which use toss levers which permit rifle shooters to quickly install and remove the scopes.

Rifle Optic Mounts with Hex Key Rings

Basic, clamp design mounting optic rings use hex head screws to position to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on the tops of rifles. These kinds of scope mounts use a pair of separate rings to support the optic, and are normally constructed from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are made for long distance accuracy shooting. This type of scope mount is great for rifles which are in need of a resilient, rock solid mount which will not change despite just how much the scope is moved about or jarring the rifle takes. These are the type of mounts you should have for a specialized optics system on a long distance scouting or competition rifle that will pretty much never need to be modified or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can additionally be used on screws to stop the hex screw threads from backing out after they are mounted safely in place. An example of these mounting rings are the 30mm type from Vortex Optics. The set typically costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Glass Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly take off a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. A wide range of scopes can also be switched out if they all use a similar designed mount. The quick detach design is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers fasten firmly to a flat top type Picatinny rail. This allows the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, taken off of the rifle, and remounted while keeping the original sighting settings. These types of mounts are useful and handy for rifles which are carried a lot, to take off the scope from the rifle for protection, or for aiming systems which are adopted between several rifles. An example of this mount type is the 30mm mount designed by the Vortex Optics brand. It normally costs around $250 USD

Sealing and Gas Purging for Rifle Scope Tubes

Wetness inside your rifle optic can destroy a day on the range and your costly optic by triggering fogging and creating residue inside of the scope’s tube. A lot of optics protect against moisture from getting in the optical tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are water resistant. Generally, these water resistant scopes can be immersed underneath 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can force moisture past the O-rings. This should be more than enough wetness prevention for basic use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you plan on taking your rifle sailing and are concerned about the scope still functioning if it falls overboard and you can still find the gun.

Info Around Glass Tube Gas Purging

Another part of preventing the buildup of wetness within the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Since this area is already occupied by the gas, the optic is less altered by temperature shifts and pressure variations from the external environment which may potentially enable water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to look for.
