Rifle Scope Information

Rifle scopes enable you to precisely align a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target over a range. They do this through magnifying the target using a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adjusted to take into account various natural considerations like wind and elevation increases or decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help the shooter understand exactly where the bullet will hit based on the sight picture you are seeing with the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Many modern-day rifle optics have about 11 parts which are arranged internally and outside of the scope body. These optic pieces consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage and elevation turrets or dials, objective focus rings, and other elements. See all eleven parts of a scope.

Rifle Glass Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Choosing the optimal type of rifle optic is based around what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Scopes

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These kinds of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where calculations are low
  • Experienced shooters who understand their target “hold over” plus “lead” relationships for their firearms
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and uses up more visual sight room than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Optic Details

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) come with the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. This triggers the reticle to remain at the very same scale in connection with the quantity of magnification being used. The final result is that the reticle measurements alter based on the magnification chosen to shoot over longer ranges due to the fact that the reticle measurements present distinct increments which fluctuate with the magnification level. In the FFP illustration with the SFP optic, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick. These particular styles of optics work for:

  • Long distance forms of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic calculations
  • Shooting where most shots take place within shorter distances and ranges
  • Shooters who select a clearer optic sight picture with less space taken up by the enlarged FFP reticle

Scope Magnification

The quantity of zoom a scope supplies is figured out by the diameter, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The magnification of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Info on Fixed Power Lens Optics

A single power rifle scope or optic uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This means the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this type of scope can not adjust considering that it is a set power scope.

Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Glass

Variable power rifle scopes can be modified between magnified settings. The power change is achieved by using the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Optic Power and Range Correlation

Here are some recommended scope power levels and the ranges where they can be efficiently used. High power glass will not be as beneficial as lower powered scopes considering too much magnification can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The exact same idea relates to extended distances where the shooter needs sufficient power to see exactly where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Lens Covering for Optics

All state-of-the-art rifle glass lenses are coated. Lens finish is an essential element of a shooting platform when looking into high end rifle optics and scope systems.

ED Versus HD Rifle Glass

Some scope makers likewise use “HD” or high-definition lens finishings which use various techniques, components, polarizations, and chemicals to draw out a wide range of colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” indicating extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating for Glass

Various optic lenses can also have different coverings used to them. All lenses normally have at least some type of treatment or finish applied to them before they are used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while reducing glare and other less advantageous things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends on the scope maker and how much you paid for it.

Some scope producers also make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are covered or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Anti-water Lens Covering

Water on a scope lens doesn’t assist with preserving a clear sight picture through a scope in any way. Many top of the line and high-end optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this sort of treatment. It treats the exterior of the Steiner optic lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or produce surface tension. The result is that the water beads slide off of the scope to keep a clear, water free sight picture.

Scope Mounting Options

Installing approaches for scopes can be found in a few choices. There are the basic scope rings which are individually installed to the optic and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These different kinds of mounts also usually can be found in quick release variations which use manual levers which allow rifle operators to quickly install and dismount the glass.

Hex Key Rifle Scope Rings

Standard, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of separate rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for long range accuracy shooting. This type of scope mount is perfect for rifles which need a resilient, sound mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Optic Ring Mounting Solutions

These kinds of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly take off a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. If they all use a comparable style mount, multiple scopes can often be swapped out in the field. The quick detach design is CNC machined from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers connect firmly to a flat top design Picatinny rail. This allows the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted while maintaining accuracy. These kinds of mounts are useful and beneficial for rifles which are moved a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for aiming systems which are adopted between a number of rifles. An example of this mount type is the 30mm mount designed by the Vortex Optics manufacturer. It generally costs around $250 USD

Sealing and Gas Purging for Glass Tubes

Moisture inside your rifle optic can spoil a day of shooting and your pricey optic by resulting in fogging and producing residue within the scope tube. The majority of optics protect against wetness from going into the optical tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant. Typically, these optics can be submerged within 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can force moisture past the O-rings. This should be plenty of moisture prevention for conventional use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you anticipate taking your rifle on your motorboat and are worried about the scope still working if it is submerged in water and you can still rescue the firearm.

Optic Gas Purging

Another component of preventing the accumulation of wetness within the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this space is already taken up by the gas, the scope is less influenced by climate shifts and pressure variations from the outdoor environment which might potentially permit water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to seek out.
