Reticle:
Leapers/UTG started introducing mil-dot reticle optics from as early as 2003, pioneering the Range Estimating concept as a useful tool for hunters and shooters around the world. Today, mil-dot reticle is widely accepted and used in the industry. Leveraging our years of experience in this area, we developed and refined the unique Tactical Range Estimating (TRE) mil-dot reticle and offer this feature in almost all of our optics. With some patient learning and practice using our TRE, shooters can enhance accuracy and performance in ways not imagined before. Although the UTG 4-16X56 30mm Bubble Leveler Scope is equipped with our patented EZ-TAP Illumination Enhancing System for red/green dual-color and 36 multi-color modes, the UTG 4-16X56 30mm Bubble Leveler Scope reticle does not specifically rely on battery power for the reticle to function. The optics features an etched-glass reticle which provides a standard black reticle when colored illumination is not required and is turned off.
The Bubble Leveler:
This optic features a precision built-in bubble leveling system. The internal bubble leveler can be found at the lower quadrant of the reticle, along the bottom edge, when viewing through the scope. It is a great tool for precision scope installation and crosshair alignment before the shot to deliver the most prominent shooting accuracy.
True Strength Platform
Built on the True Strength Platform, these scopes are completely sealed and nitrogen filled making them shockproof, fog proof, and rainproof. The innovative True Strength (TS) Platform is a signature scope construction platform that provides long lasting reliability in these interactions to guarantee precise and responsive windage/elevation adjustment.

Rifle Scope Details

Rifle scopes allow you to specifically aim a rifle at different targets by lining up your eye with the target over a distance. They do this through zoom by making use of a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted for the consideration of varied ecological factors like wind speed and elevation decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand precisely where the bullet will land based upon the sight picture you are viewing using the optic as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Many contemporary rifle scopes and optics have around 11 parts which are located internally and outside of the optic. These scope parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage and elevation dials or turrets, objective focus rings, and other elements. Learn about the eleven parts of glass.

About Optic Varieties

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. The style of focal plane an optic has determines where the reticle or crosshair is located in connection with the optic’s zoom. It literally suggests the reticle is situated behind or before the magnifying lens of the optic. Picking out the most reliable style of rifle optic depends upon what style of shooting you anticipate doing.

About First Focal Plane Scopes

Focal plane scopes (FFP) come with the reticle in front of the magnifying lens. This triggers the reticle to increase in size based on the level of zoom being used. The benefit is that the reticle measurements are the same at the amplified distance as they are at the non amplified range. For example, one tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards with no “zoom” is still the same tick at one hundred yards using 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are minor
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their target “hold over” as well as “lead” relationships for their firearm
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and occupies more visual eyesight room than a SFP reticle

Info on Second Focal Plane Scopes

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) feature the reticle to the rear of the zoom lens. This induces the reticle to stay at the very same overall size in relation to the amount of magnification being used. The outcome is that the reticle measurements adjust based on the zoom used to shoot over lengthier ranges due to the fact that the reticle measurements represent various increments which vary with the zoom. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These styles of glass work for:

  • Long distance styles of shooting where shooters have more time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most of the shots occur within shorter ranges and proximities
  • Shooters who choose a clearer optic picture without area taken up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Ins and Outs of Rifle Optic Zoom

The amount of zoom a scope provides is figured out by the diameter, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Fixed Single Power Lens Optics

A single power rifle optic or scope uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This means the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of scope can not fluctuate given that it is a fixed power optic.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Optics

Variable power rifle scopes can be adjusted between magnification power levels. It will note the magnification degree in a format like 2-10×32. These numbers suggest the magnification of the scope could be adjusted between 2x and 10x power. This always includes the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power modification is accomplished by making use of the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

The Power Level and Range Correlation of Rifle Optics

Here are some suggested scope powers and the ranges where they may be efficiently used. High power glass will not be as useful as lower magnification rifle scope glass considering too much zoom can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The same idea relates to extended ranges where the shooter needs increased power to see exactly where to best aim the rifle at the target.

Lens Coating for Rifle Scopes

All modern-day rifle optic and scope lenses are layered. There are various types and qualities of glass coatings. Lens finishing can be an essential element of a rifle when thinking of high-end rifle optics and targeting equipment. The glass lenses are one of the most important parts of the glass given that they are what your eye sees through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The finishing on the lenses protects the lens surface and helps with anti glare capabilities from refracted sunrays and color visibility.

HD Versus ED Lens Coatings

Some rifle scope manufacturers additionally use “HD” or high-definition lens coatings that use various processes, polarizations, components, and chemicals to enhance separate color ranges and viewable target definition through the lens. This high-definition covering is typically used with more costly high density lens glass which decreases light’s capability to refract by means of the lens glass. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” suggesting extra-low dispersion glass. ED handles how certain colors are represented on the chroma spectrum and the chromatic aberration or deviance which is similarly called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration is often obvious around objects with well defined shapes as light hits the object from various angles.

What to Know About Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can also have different coatings used to them. All lenses generally have at least some type of treatment or coating applied to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can protect the lens from scratches while reducing glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single covered lens depends on the scope producer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope makers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. Being “better” depends on the manufacturer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of products used in building the rifle scope.

Info on Hydrophobic Coating

Water on an optical lens doesn’t support retaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Lots of top of the line and high-end optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic finishing. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this kind of treatment. It treats the exterior surfaces of the Steiner glass lens so the H2O molecules can not bind to it or develop surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads roll off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Optic Installing Choices

Installing solutions for scopes come in a couple of options. There are the basic scope rings which are individually installed to the scope and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different kinds of mounts also generally are made in quick release variations which use toss levers which permit rifle operators to rapidly install and remove the scopes.

Hex Key Scope Ring Mounts

Standard, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of different rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for long distance accuracy shooting. This type of scope mount is great for rifles which require a durable, sound mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abused.

Rifle Optic Mounting Solutions with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly attach and remove a scope from a rifle. If they all use a similar style mount, multiple scopes can often be swapped out on the range. The quick detach mount style is CNC machined from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers attach firmly to a flat top design Picatinny rail. This enables the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted while keeping precision. These types of mounts are useful and handy for rifles which are moved around a lot, to take off the scope glass from the rifle for protection, or for scopes which are chosen for use between a number of rifles. An example of this mount type is the 30mm mount designed by the Vortex Optics brand. It generally costs around $250 USD

Sealing and Gas Purging for Glass Tubes

Wetness inside your rifle scope can destroy a day of shooting and your costly optic by bringing about fogging and creating residue inside of the scope tube. The majority of scopes avoid wetness from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof.

What to Know About Rifle Optic Tube Gas Purging

Another component of avoiding the accumulation of wetness within the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this space is already occupied by the gas, the glass is less affected by condition changes and pressure variations from the outside environment which might potentially allow water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
