Primary Arms SLX 4-14x44mm FFP Rifle Scope – MIL-DOT
The SLx optics are the heart of our lineup. The trusted optics that have built our reputation through the years. Although many SLx optics will be familiar to Primary Arms fans, we are always pushing forward with new generations and adding even more options in response to the demands of our loyal customers.
The Primary Arms 4-14x44mm rifle scope was our first step into first focal plane (FFP) optics and remains one of the most cost-effective options on the market. Having a reticle stay ‘true’ through the entire magnification range opens a world of possibility for hunters, marksman, and competitors everywhere.
At the heart of the 4-14x44mm rifle scope is our first focal plane MIL-DOT reticle. Properly matched with MIL/MIL turret adjustments, this traditional reticle allows users to range and find their holdovers without being forced to use caliber specific BDC systems. Each dot is .25 MILs with a full MIL measured from the center of one dot to the next. For shooters who want a proven reticle with wide spread military acceptance, the MIL-DOT is perfect for you.

Rifle Scope Info

Rifle scopes allow you to exactly align a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target at range. They do this through magnification by using a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adjusted for consideration of separate environmental things like wind and elevation increases or decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to help shooters understand exactly where the bullet will hit based on the sight picture you are viewing via the scope as you align the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. Most modern rifle scopes have about eleven parts which are arranged internally and on the exterior of the optic. These optic pieces consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, modification turrets or dials, focus rings, and other parts. Learn about the eleven parts of scopes.

About Rifle Optic Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. The type of focal plane an optic has identifies where the reticle or crosshair is located in relation to the optic’s magnifying adjustments. It actually indicates the reticle is located behind or in front of the magnifying lens of the scope. Looking for the best kind of rifle glass is based on what style of shooting you intend on undertaking.

Info About First Focal Plane Glass

Focal plane scopes (FFP) include the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These styles of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where computations are minimal
  • Experienced shooters who have an idea for their aim point “hold over” and also “lead” correlations for their rifles
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is enlarged and requires more visual sight space than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scopes

Second focal plane glass (SFP) feature the reticle behind the zoom lens. This causes the reticle to remain at the very same scale in relation to the amount of magnification being used. The result is that the reticle measurements adapt based on the zoom chosen to shoot over greater ranges due to the fact that the reticle measurements represent distinct increments which vary with the zoom level. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement. These particular styles of scopes work for:

  • Long distance kinds of shooting where shooters have extra time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most shots take place within much shorter ranges and proximities
  • Shooters who prefer a clearer optic sight picture without area taken up by the bigger FFP reticle

Rifle Scope Magnification

The extent of scope zoom you need on your scope is based on the style of shooting you plan to do. Pretty much every style of rifle optic delivers some level of zoom. The quantity of magnification a scope gives is identified by the size, density, and curves of the lenses within the rifle optic. The magnification level of the optic is the “power” of the scope. This suggests what the shooter is looking at through the scope is magnified times the power aspect of what can typically be seen by human eyes.

Info on Single Power Lens Rifle Glass

A single power rifle optic or scope will have a magnification number designator like 4×32. This implies the magnification power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this kind of scope can not change given that it is a set power scope.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Optic Facts

Variable power rifle scopes can be changed between magnification increments. It will note the zoom level in a configuration such as 2-10×32. These numbers mean the zoom of the scope could be set between 2x and 10x power. This additionally utilizes the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power manipulation is achieved by working with the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell piece.

The Power and Range Correlation of Glass

Here are some recommended scope powers and the distances where they may be effectively used. High power scopes will not be as efficient as lower powered glass considering that too much zoom can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The same goes for longer ranges where the shooter needs adequate power to see exactly where to best aim the rifle.

Optic Lens Covering

All modern-day rifle optic and scope lenses are covered in special coatings. There are different types and qualities of glass finishings. When considering luxury rifle scope units, Lens covering can be a critical aspect of defining the capability of the rifle. The glass lenses are one of the most important components of the glass considering they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The coating on the lenses offers protection to the lens surface and even assists with anti glare from excess direct sunlight and color visibility.

HD Versus ED Rifle Glass Lens Coatings

Some rifle glass manufacturers even use “HD” or high-definition glass coverings that apply various processes, elements, compounds, and polarizations to enhance a wide range of colors and viewable target definition through the lens. This high-def finish is typically used with more costly high density lens glass which decreases light’s potential to refract by means of the lens glass. Some scope producers use “HD” to describe “ED” signifying extra-low dispersion glass. ED deals with how certain colors are presented on the chromatic spectrum and the chromatic aberration or deviance which is similarly called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration is often obvious around things with hard edges and shapes as light hits the item from specific angles.

Single Finishing Versus Multi-Coating

Various optic lenses can likewise have different coatings used to them. All lenses usually have at least some type of treatment or coating applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while reducing glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope manufacturer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope producers likewise make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. This implies the lens has multiple treatments applied to the surfaces. If a lens receives several treatments, it can indicate that a company is taking multiple actions to combat various natural elements like an anti-glare finish, a scratch resistant anti-abrasion coating, followed by a hydrophilic covering. This also doesn’t always suggest the multi-coated lens will perform much better than a single coated lens. Being “much better” depends upon the manufacturer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of glass used in constructing the rifle optic.

Hydrophobic Finishing for Rifle Scopes

Water on a scope lens doesn’t assist with maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope in any way. Numerous top of the line and premium optic manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this sort of treatment. It deals with the exterior surfaces of the Steiner glass lens so the H2O molecules can not bind to it or produce surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads slide off of the scope to maintain a clear, water free sight picture.

Choices for Mounting Scopes on Long Guns

Installing solutions for scopes are available in a few choices. There are the standard scope rings which are separately installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different types of mounts also generally can be found in quick release variations which use toss levers which allow rifle shooters to rapidly mount and remove the glass.

Hex Key Rifle Optic Rings

Standard, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two separate rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is created for long distance precision shooting. This type of scope mount is great for rifles which require a resilient, sound mounting solution which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Glass Ring Mounts

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly remove a scope and connect it to a different rifle. Several scopes can even be switched out if they all use a similar design mount. These types of mounts are convenient for long guns which are transferred a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are used in between multiple rifles or are situationally focused.

Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Wetness inside your rifle scope can ruin a day of shooting and your pricey optic by inducing fogging and making residue inside of the scope tube. Most scopes protect against moisture from getting in the scope tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are water resistant. Typically, these water-resistant scopes can be immersed within 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can force moisture past the O-rings. This should be ample wetness prevention for conventional use rifles, unless you anticipate taking your rifle on your motorboat and are worried about the scope still performing if it falls overboard and you can still rescue the firearm.

About Glass Tube Gas Purging

Another element of avoiding the buildup of wetness inside of the rifle optic’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this space is already occupied by the gas, the scope is less affected by condition alterations and pressure variations from the outdoor environment which could potentially allow water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to seek out.
