Info Glass

Rifle scopes permit you to exactly aim a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They do this through zoom by making use of a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be dialed in to account for numerous natural considerations like wind and elevation to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to understand precisely where the bullet will land based upon the sight picture you are viewing through the optic as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. Most contemporary rifle optics have around 11 parts which are found internally and on the exterior of the scope. These optic pieces include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, modification dials or turrets, focus rings, and other components. See all eleven parts of a rifle scope.

Rifle Scope Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Finding the finest type of rifle glass is based on what type of shooting you plan to do.

First Focal Plane Optics

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the zoom lens. These kinds of scopes are helpful for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting situations where computations are minor
  • Experienced shooters who know their aim point “hold over” and also “lead” correlations for their weapon
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and requires more visual sight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scopes

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) include the reticle behind the magnifying lens. This triggers the reticle to stay at the very same scale in connection with the level of zoom being used. The effect is that the reticle measurements evolve based on the zoom used to shoot over lengthier distances because the markings present various increments which can vary with the magnification. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick. These particular types of scopes work for:

  • Far away styles of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most shots take place within much shorter spaces and ranges
  • Shooters who desire a clearer optic sight picture with less space used up by the bigger FFP reticle

About Rifle Scope Magnification

The quantity of magnification a scope offers is figured out by the size, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Fixed Power Lens Rifle Optics

A single power rifle scope comes with a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the magnification power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of optic can not adjust considering that it is set from the factory.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Scopes

Variable power rifle scopes use enhanced power. The power modification is performed by the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

Scope Power and Ranges

Here are some recommended scope power levels and the ranges where they can be efficiently used. Remember that high magnification scopes and optics will not be as practical as lower powered glass because too much magnification can be a negative thing in certain situations. The same idea relates to longer ranges where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see exactly where to properly aim the rifle.

Info on Lens Coatings

All modern rifle optic and scope lenses are coated. Lens covering is an important aspect of a shooting system when looking at high end rifle optics and scope equipment.

ED Versus HD Rifle Scopes

Some scope suppliers even use “HD” or high-def lens coverings which make the most of various processes, polarizations, elements, and chemicals to draw out a wide range of color ranges and viewable target visibility through lenses. This high-def coating is normally used with increased density lens glass which drops light’s capability to refract by means of the lens glass. Some scope suppliers use “HD” to refer to “ED” meaning extra-low dispersion glass. ED handles how certain colors are presented on the chroma spectrum and the chromatic aberration which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration may be noticeable over things with defined outlines as light hits the item from various angles.

Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating for Glass

Various scope lenses can also have different finishes applied to them. All lenses normally have at least some kind of treatment or covering applied to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. Due to the fact that the lens isn’t simply a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It becomes part of the finely tuned optic. It requires a coating to be applied to it so that the lens will be efficiently functional in many kinds of environments, degrees of light (full light VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

This lens treatment can offer protection to the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends on the scope maker and how much you paid for it.

Some scope manufacturers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the producer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.

Anti-water Covering for Glass

Water on a scope’s lens doesn’t support maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Many top of the line or high-end scope producers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic covering. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this type of treatment. It treats the surface area of the Steiner scope lens so the water particles can not bind to it or produce surface tension. The result is that the water beads move off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Choices for Mounting Rifle Glass on Firearms

Installing solutions for scopes come in a couple of options. There are the basic scope rings which are separately installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various kinds of mounts also normally can be found in quick release variations which use toss levers which permit rifle operators to quickly install and remove the optics.

Hex Key Rifle Optic Ring Mounts

Normal, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use a couple of separate rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which is designed for long distance accuracy shooting. This type of scope install is great for rifles which require a long lasting, sound mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abused.

Rifle Glass Mounting Solutions with Quick-Release Cantilever Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly take off a scope and attach it to a different rifle. Multiple scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a similar design mount. These types of mounts are convenient for long guns which are transported a lot, to swap out the optic from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are used between several rifles or are situationally focused.

Rifle Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle scope can destroy a day of shooting and your expensive optic by bringing about fogging and creating residue inside of the scope tube. The majority of scopes avoid wetness from going into the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof.

Gas Purged Scope Tubes

Another element of preventing the buildup of wetness within the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this space is already occupied by the gas, the glass is less influenced by temperature level alterations and pressure distinctions from the outdoor environment which might possibly permit water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to seek out.
