What You Need to Know About Rifle Optics
Rifle scopes allow you to specifically align a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target over a range. They do this through magnifying the target by using a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adjusted for consideration of varied environmental things like wind and elevation increases or decreases to account for bullet drop.
The scope’s function is to help the shooter understand exactly where the bullet will land based on the sight picture you are viewing via the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended point of impact. A lot of modern rifle optics have around 11 parts which are located internally and on the exterior of the scope body. These parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, modification turrets, objective focus rings, and other elements. Learn about the eleven parts of scopes.
About Rifle Scope Types
Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” style of scopes. The form of focal plane an optic has decides where the reticle or crosshair is located in connection with the optic’s magnification. It simply means the reticle is behind or ahead of the magnification lens of the optic. Looking for the most desired kind of rifle optic is dependent on what type of shooting or hunting you intend on undertaking.
About First Focal Plane Glass
Focal plane scopes (FFP) come with the reticle in front of the zoom lens. This triggers the reticle to increase in size based on the extent of magnification being used. The benefit is that the reticle measurements are the same at the amplified distance as they are at the non magnified range. For instance, one tick on a mil-dot reticle at 100 yards without having “zoom” is still the very same tick at one hundred yards with 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes work for:
- Quick acquisition, far away kinds of shooting
- Shooting scenarios where calculations are minimal
- Experienced shooters who understand their target “hold over” plus “lead” relationships for their long gun
- Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and takes up more visual sight area than a SFP reticle
About Second Focal Plane Glass
Second focal plane optics (SFP) feature the reticle to the rear of the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement.
- Far away forms of shooting where shooters have additional time to make ballistic calculations
- Shooting where most shots take place within much shorter ranges and distances
- Shooters who choose a clearer optic picture with less space taken up by the larger sized FFP reticle
Magnification for Rifle Glass
The amount of zoom a scope provides is identified by the size, thickness, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope.
Fixed Power Lens Optic Info
A single power rifle scope or optic comes with a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of scope can not adjust since it is fixed.
Info About Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Scopes
Variable power rifle scopes have adjustable power. It will list the zoom level in a format like 2-10×32. These numbers imply the zoom of the scope could be set in between 2x and 10x power. This additionally incorporates the powers in-between 2 and 10. The power adjustment is accomplished by operating the power ring component of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.
The Power Level and Range of Rifle Glass
Here are some suggested scope power levels and the distances where they may be efficiently used. Consider that higher power scopes and optics will not be as efficient as lower powered scopes since too much zoom can be a negative thing in certain situations. The very same idea relates to longer distances where the shooter needs to have enough power to see exactly where to best aim the rifle at the target.
Details on Scope Lens Coatings
All top teir rifle glass lenses are coated. Lens finish is a crucial element of a shooting system when looking at high end rifle optics and scope setups.
Details on Rifle Glass Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED
Some optic manufacturers also use “HD” or high-definition glass coatings which apply different processes, polarizations, rare earth compounds, and aspects to draw out various colors and viewable target definition through lenses. This high-definition finish is often used with greater density lens glass which brings down light’s capability to refract by means of the lens glass. Some scope makers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass. ED handles how colors are represented on the chroma spectrum and the chromatic aberration which is similarly called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration may be visible over objects with well defined shapes as light hits the item from particular angles.
Single Finishing Versus Multi-Coating for Glass
Different optic lenses can also have different finishings applied to them. All lenses normally have at least some kind of treatment or finishing applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. This is because the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass. It is part of the finely tuned optic. It needs to have a covering put on it so that the lens will be optimally usable in many types of environments, degrees of sunlight (full VS shade), and other shooting conditions.
This lens treatment can offer protection to the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends on the scope producer and how much you paid for it.
Some scope producers also make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are covered or “multi” covered. Being “much better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of products used in developing the rifle scope.
Anti-water Lens Finish
Water on a lens doesn’t help with maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Numerous top of the line and military grade scope companies will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic finish.
Rifle Glass Installing Choices
Installing options for scopes come in a couple of options. There are the basic scope rings which are separately installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also normally can be found in quick release versions which use toss levers which enable rifle operators to rapidly mount and dismount the optics.
Rifle Optic Mounting Solutions with Hex Key Rings
Standard, clamp-on design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to position to the flattop style Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These styles of scope mounts use two detached rings to support the scope, and are normally made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are made for far away precision shooting. This kind of scope mount is great for rifle systems which need a long lasting, hard use mount which will not shift no matter how much the scope is moved about or jarring the rifle takes. These are the type of mounts you should get for a dedicated optics system on a long distance scouting or sniper competition rifle which will pretty much never need to be altered or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can additionally be used on screws to stop the hex screws from wiggling out after they are installed securely in position. An example of these mounting rings are the 30mm type made by Vortex Optics. The set generally costs around $200 USD
Quick-Release Cantilever Scope Rings
These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly attach and remove a scope from a rifle before reattaching it to a different rifle. Multiple scopes can even be swapped out if they all use a similar style mount. These types of mounts are handy for rifle platforms which are carried a lot, to swap out the optic from the rifle for protecting the scope, or for scopes which are used between numerous rifles.
Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging
Moisture inside your rifle optic can mess up a day of shooting and your expensive optic by triggering fogging and making residue within the scope’s tube. Many optics protect against moisture from going into the optical tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are water resistant. Normally, these optics can be immersed under 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be more than enough moisture avoidance for conventional use rifles, unless you plan on taking your rifle aboard a watercraft and are concerned about the optic still working if it goes over the side and you can still salvage the firearm.
Rifle Scope Gas Purging
Another part of avoiding the buildup of moisture inside of the rifle scope’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this space is currently taken up by the gas, the optic is less altered by temperature level shifts and pressure differences from the external environment which might potentially allow water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
