What You Need to Know About Scopes

Rifle scopes enable you to specifically align a rifle at various targets by lining up your eye with the target over a range. They accomplish this through zoom by making use of a set of lenses within the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adjusted to take into account different natural elements like wind and elevation decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to understand exactly where the bullet will land based upon the sight picture you are viewing with the optic as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. The majority of modern-day rifle optics have about 11 parts which are located within and externally on the optic. These parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage and elevation dials or turrets, objective focus rings, and other components. See all eleven parts of an optic.

Rifle Scope Types

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Deciding upon the optimal type of rifle optic is based on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Scopes

Focal plane scopes (FFP) come with the reticle in front of the zoom lens. This causes the reticle to increase in size based on the amount of zoom being used. The benefit is that the reticle measurements are the same at the amplified range as they are at the non amplified distance. For example, one tick on a mil-dot reticle at one hundred yards with no “zoom” is still the very same tick at one hundred yards with 5x “zoom”. These kinds of scopes are practical for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where calculations are small
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their aim point “hold over” and “lead” correlations for their long guns
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is bigger and requires more visual eyesight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scopes

Second focal plane optics (SFP) feature the reticle to the rear of the magnification lens. This induces the reticle to remain at the same dimensions relative to the amount of magnification being used. The outcome is that the reticle measurements adjust based on the magnification applied to shoot over greater distances since the markings represent distinct increments which can vary with the magnification. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement. These sorts of scopes are useful for:

  • Long distance types of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most shots occur within much shorter distances and ranges
  • Shooters who would like a clearer optic picture with less area used up by the larger size FFP reticle

Magnification for Rifle Glass

The amount of magnification a scope provides is identified by the size, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Single Power Lens Glass Details

A single power rifle optic or scope will have a magnification number designator like 4×32. This means the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this kind of scope can not change given that it is set from the factory.

Variable Power Lens Optic Info

Variable power rifle scopes can be adjusted between magnification increments. These types of scopes will note the zoom level in a configuration like 2-10×32. These numbers mean the magnification of the scope could be set between 2x and 10x power. This additionally involves the power levels in-between 2 and 10. The power modification is accomplished by making use of the power ring component of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

Scope Power and Range Correlation

Here are some recommended scope power settings and the ranges where they can be efficiently used. Highly magnified rifle scope glass will not be as efficient as lower powered optics considering that too much zoom can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The same concept goes for extended distances where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see exactly where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

Lens Finishing for Rifle Scopes

All contemporary rifle scope lenses are coated. There are different types and qualities of coverings. When looking at luxury rifle optics and scope devices, Lens finish can be an essential component of defining the capability of the rifle. The lenses are one of the most significant parts of the glass due to the fact that they are what your eye sees through while sighting a rifle in on the point of impact. The coating on the lenses safeguards the lens surface and also assists with anti glare from refracted sunlight and color discernibility.

HD Versus ED Lens Coatings

Some scope companies even use “HD” or high-def glass finishings that apply various processes, rare earth compounds, polarizations, and elements to extract different colors and viewable target definition through lenses. This high-definition finishing is frequently used with more costly high density glass which brings down light’s potential to refract through the lens glass. Some scope suppliers use “HD” to refer to “ED” signifying extra-low dispersion glass. ED deals with how colors are represented on the chromatic spectrum and the chromatic aberration or difference which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration is often noticeable around objects with hard edges and outlines as light hits the item from specific angles.

Single Rifle Glass Lens Coating Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can likewise have different coverings used to them. All lenses normally have at least some type of treatment or finish applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic.

This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends on the scope manufacturer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope producers also make it a point to define if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. This implies the lens has had several treatments applied to them. If a lens gets multiple treatments, it can indicate that a company is taking numerous actions to combat various natural elements like an anti-glare coating, a scratch resistant anti-abrasion covering, followed by a hydrophilic coating. This also does not necessarily indicate the multi-coated lens is better than a single coated lens. Being “better” is dependent on the manufacturer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of components used in creating the rifle glass.

Anti-water Finishing for Rifle Glass

Water on an optic’s lens doesn’t improve keeping a clear sight picture through an optic at all. Numerous top of the line or premium scope manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic covering. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this kind of treatment. It deals with the surface of the Steiner glass lens so the water molecules can not bind to it or create surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads move off of the scope to preserve a clear, water free sight picture.

Rifle Glass Mounting Options

Installing options for scopes are available in a few options. There are the basic scope rings which are separately installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various kinds of mounts also generally can be found in quick release versions which use toss levers which permit rifle shooters to rapidly mount and dismount the scopes.

Optic Mounts with Hex Key Rings

Basic, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to install to the flattop design Picatinny scope mounting rails on the tops of rifles. These forms of scope mounts use a pair of independent rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are developed for far away accuracy shooting. This kind of scope mount is great for rifles which need a long lasting, unfailing mount which will not change despite how much the scope is moved or jarring the rifle takes. These are the type of mounts you really want to have for a faithful scope system on a reach out and touch someone hunting or interdiction firearm that will seldom need to be modified or recalibrated. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can additionally be used on the mount’s screws to keep the hex screws from backing out after they are installed safely in place. An example of these mounting rings are the 30mm style from the Vortex Optics company. The set typically costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Optic Ring Mounting Solutions

These kinds of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly remove a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. Multiple scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a similar designed mount. The quick detach design is CNC machined from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers attach solidly to a flat top style Picatinny rail. This enables the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, taken off of the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while keeping accuracy. These kinds of mounts come in beneficial for shooting platforms which are hauled around a lot, to take off the glass from the rifle for protection, or for sight systems which are adopted between numerous rifles. An example of this mount type is the 30mm mount from the Vortex Optics manufacturer. It typically costs around $250 USD

Sealing and Gas Purging for Rifle Scope Tubes

Wetness inside your rifle optic can spoil a day of shooting and your pricey optic by resulting in fogging and making residue within the scope’s tube. Many optics protect against wetness from entering the optical tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant. Normally, these water resistant scopes can be submerged beneath 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be ample moisture content avoidance for standard use rifles, unless you anticipate taking your rifle on boats and are concerned about the scope still performing if it goes over the side and you can still recover the gun.

Glass Gas Purging

Another component of avoiding the buildup of moisture inside of the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Given that this area is already taken up by the gas, the scope is less affected by temperature level changes and pressure variations from the outdoor environment which could possibly permit water vapor to seep in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a decent rifle scope to seek out.
