Facts About Rifle Glass

Rifle scopes allow you to exactly aim a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They do this through zoom by using a series of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adjusted to account for various environmental factors like wind speed and elevation to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand exactly where the bullet will hit based upon the sight picture you are seeing using the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Most modern-day rifle scopes have about eleven parts which are located inside and outside of the scope. These optic pieces include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage dials or turrets, objective focus rings, and other components. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle optics.

The Types of Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Going for the perfect type of rifle optic is based on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

First Focal Plane Optic Details

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the zoom lens. These kinds of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away types of shooting
  • Shooting situations where calculations are small
  • Experienced shooters who have an idea for their target “hold over” plus “lead” relationships for their firearms
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and uses up more visual sight area than a SFP reticle

About Second Focal Plane Glass

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) come with the reticle to the rear of the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement.

  • Long distance types of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most shots happen within much shorter ranges and proximities
  • Shooters who select a clearer optic sight picture without room used up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Scope Zoom

The amount of scope magnification you need on your optic depends upon the style of shooting you desire to do. Nearly every kind of rifle optic offers some degree of zoom. The volume of zoom a scope gives is determined by the size, density, and curvatures of the lens glass within the rifle optic. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the opic. This denotes what the shooter is checking out through the scope is magnified times the power factor of what can normally be seen by human eyes.

Single Power Lens Rifle Scopes

A single power rifle optic or scope uses a zoom number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this type of scope can not fluctuate given that it is set from the factory.

About Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Scopes

Variable power rifle scopes can be changed between magnification power levels. It will note the zoom level in a configuration such as 2-10×32. These numbers imply the zoom of the scope can be set between 2x and 10x power. This also includes the powers in-between 2 and 10. The power modification is achieved by employing the power ring component of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell piece.

The Power and Range of Rifle Optics

Here are some advised scope powers and the distances where they can be efficiently used. High power rifle scope glass will not be as useful as lower magnification level scopes considering that too much zoom can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The very same idea relates to extended ranges where the shooter needs to have enough power to see exactly where to best aim the rifle.

Glass Lens Coating

All modern-day rifle optic lenses are covered in special coatings. There are various types and qualities of glass finishes. When shopping for high end rifle optical units, Lens finish can be a vital component of defining the rifle’s capability. The glass lenses are one of the most essential pieces of the optic because they are what your eye looks through while sighting a rifle in on the point of impact. The finishing on the lenses shields the lens exterior and also improves anti glare capabilities from excess sunrays and color visibility.

ED Versus HD Rifle Glass

Some rifle scope suppliers will also use “HD” or high-def glass finishings which take advantage of different procedures, rare earth compounds, polarizations, and aspects to extract different color ranges and viewable target definition through lenses. This HD finishing is often used with more costly high density glass which drops light’s capability to refract by means of the lens glass. Some scope corporations use “HD” to refer to “ED” suggesting extra-low dispersion glass. ED handles how colors are presented on the chroma spectrum and the chromatic deviance or aberration which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration can be obvious over objects with hard edges and outlines as light hits the object from particular angles.

Info on Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating

Various scope lenses can even have different coatings applied to them. All lenses normally have at least some type of treatment or covering applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. Since the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It is part of the carefully tuned optic. It needs to have a coating applied to it so that the lens will be optimally functional in many types of environments, degrees of light (full light VS shade), and other shooting conditions.

This lens treatment can offer protection to the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less useful things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single covered lens depends on the scope producer and how much you paid for it.

Some scope makers likewise make it a point to define if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. This indicates the lens has multiple treatments applied to them. If a lens gets multiple treatments, it can establish that a manufacturer is taking several actions to fight different environmental elements like an anti-glare finish, a scratch resistant anti-abrasion coating, followed by a hydrophilic finishing. This also does not always indicate the multi-coated lens is better than a single coated lens. Being “better” is dependent on the maker’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of materials used in creating the rifle scope.

Anti-water Lens Coatings

Water on a lens doesn’t assist with maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Many top of the line and military grade optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophilic or hydrophobic covering.

Choices for Installing Optics on Firearms

Installing options for scopes can be found in a few choices. There are the standard scope rings which are individually installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different types of mounts also usually come in quick release versions which use throw levers which enable rifle shooters to rapidly mount and dismount the scope.

Scope Mounts with Hex Key Rings

Standard, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop style Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two different rings to support the optic, and are often made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are developed for long distance precision shooting. This type of scope install is great for rifles which require a resilient, sound mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Scope Ring Mounting Solutions

These kinds of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly take off a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. Several scopes can also be switched out if they all use a similar style mount. The quick detach design is CNC machined from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers attach nicely to a flat top style Picatinny rail. This allows the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, removed from the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while keeping accuracy. These types of mounts come in convenient for rifles which are moved a lot, to take off the scope from the rifle for protection, or for scopes which are employed between several rifles. An example of this mount style is the 30mm mount from the Vortex Optics brand. It generally costs around $250 USD

Sealing and Gas Purging for Rifle Scope Tubes

Wetness inside your rifle optic can destroy a day of shooting and your expensive optic by causing fogging and making residue inside of the scope’s tube. Many scopes prevent wetness from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Usually, these water-resistant scopes can be immersed within 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be more than enough wetness prevention for basic use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you anticipate taking your rifle on your motorboat and are worried about the optic still performing if it goes over the side and you can still find the gun.

Glass Gas Purging

Another component of avoiding the accumulation of wetness inside of the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this area is already occupied by the gas, the optic is less impacted by climate alterations and pressure differences from the outside environment which might potentially enable water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to seek out.
