Rifle Scope Information

Rifle scopes enable you to specifically aim a rifle at different targets by aligning your eye with the target over a distance. They accomplish this through magnifying the target by utilizing a set of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s positioning can be adapted for the consideration of different environmental considerations like wind and elevation decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to understand precisely where the bullet will hit based on the sight picture you are viewing via the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. A lot of modern-day rifle optics have around 11 parts which are arranged within and externally on the optic. These optic pieces include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, adjustment turrets or dials, focus rings, and other components. See all eleven parts of a rifle optical system.

Rifle Glass Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Finding the optimal type of rifle optic is based around what type of shooting you plan to do.

Info on First Focal Plane Scopes

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These styles of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance kinds of shooting
  • Shooting scenarios where estimations are low
  • Experienced shooters who know their target “hold over” plus “lead” correlations for their firearms
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is enlarged and requires more visual sight room than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scope Info

Second focal plane optics (SFP) feature the reticle behind the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement.

  • Long distance styles of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most of the shots occur within shorter ranges and proximities
  • Shooters who choose a clearer optic picture with less room taken up by the bigger FFP reticle

Details on Scope Magnification

The level of scope magnification you require depends upon the sort of shooting you would like to do. Just about every kind of rifle scope provides some degree of magnification. The level of magnification a scope provides is determined by the dimension, density, and curvatures of the lens glass inside of the rifle optic. The magnifying level of the scope is the “power” of the glass. This implies what the shooter is looking at through the scope is amplified times the power aspect of what can normally be seen by human eyes.

Fixed Power Lens Scope Info

A single power rifle scope and optic will have a magnification number designator like 4×32. This indicates the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of optic can not adjust since it is a set power scope.

About Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Scopes

Variable power rifle scopes can be changed between magnification power levels. These types of scopes will list the zoom degree in a configuration such as 2-10×32. These numbers suggest the zoom of the scope can be set between 2x and 10x power. This also involves the powers in-between 2 and 10. The power shift is accomplished by operating the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Power Levels and Range

Here are some advised scope power settings and the distances where they could be successfully used. Highly magnified rifle scope glass will not be as useful as lower powered scopes considering too much magnification can be a negative aspect depending on your shooting distance. The same relates to extended ranges where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see where to best aim the rifle at the target.

About Lens Coatings

All cutting-edge rifle scope lenses are layered. Lens finish can be an essential aspect of a rifle’s setup when purchasing high end rifle optics and scope systems.

About Scope Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some rifle scope suppliers will also use “HD” or high-def glass coatings that apply different procedures, polarizations, elements, and chemicals to enhance separate color ranges and viewable definition through the lens. This high-def finish is commonly used with increased density lens glass which lowers light’s chance to refract through the lens glass. Some scope makers use “HD” to describe “ED” suggesting extra-low dispersion glass. ED handles how colors are represented on the chromatic spectrum and the chromatic difference or aberration which is similarly called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration may be visible around things with hard outlines as light hits the object from specific angles.

Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can likewise have different coverings applied to them. All lenses normally have at least some type of treatment or coating used to them before they are used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single coated lenses have a treatment applied to them which is usually a protective and improving multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can shield the lens from scratches while lowering glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single covered lens depends on the scope producer and how much you spent on it. Both the manufacturer and amount are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope manufacturers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” covered. Being “much better” depends on the manufacturer’s lens treatment innovation and the quality of materials used in developing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Lens Coating

Water on a lens doesn’t help with preserving a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Many top of the line and high-end optic companies will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic anti-water finishing.

Scope Mounting Alternatives

Mounting options for scopes can be found in a few choices. There are the basic scope rings which are separately mounted to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also typically can be found in quick release versions which use manual levers which allow rifle operators to quickly install and dismount the scopes.

Hex Key Optic Ring Mounts

Standard, clamp design mounting scope rings use hex head screws to fix to the flattop style Picatinny scope mount rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two separate rings to support the scope, and are usually constructed from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for far away accuracy shooting. This kind of scope mount is great for rifle systems which require a durable, hard use mount which will not change despite how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes. These are the design of mounts you should have for a faithful scope setup on a far away hunting or competition rifle that will seldom need to be altered or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can also be used on the mount’s screws to protect against the hex screw threads from backing out after they are mounted tightly in position. An example of these mounting rings are the 30mm type from Vortex Optics. The set normally costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Glass Ring Mounts

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to rapidly attach and detach a scope from a rifle before reattaching it to a different rifle. Multiple scopes can even be swapped out if they all use a compatible design mount. These types of mounts come in handy for long guns which are carried a lot, to swap out the optic from the rifle for protection, or for optics which are used in between numerous rifles or are situationally focused.

Sealing and Gas Purging for Glass Tubes

Wetness inside your rifle scope can mess up a day on the range and your pricey optic by causing fogging and generating residue within the scope tube. The majority of scopes prevent humidity from entering the optical tube with a series of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Usually, these optics can be submerged within 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can push moisture past the O-rings. This should be plenty of humidity avoidance for standard use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you plan on taking your rifle aboard watercrafts and are worried about the optic still functioning if it is submerged in water and you can still retrieve the gun.

Info on Glass Tube Gas Purging

Another part of preventing the accumulation of moisture within the rifle optic tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this space is already taken up by the gas, the optic is less affected by climate changes and pressure distinctions from the outdoor environment which might potentially permit water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
