Glass Info

Rifle scopes allow you to exactly align a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They accomplish this through zoom by utilizing a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adapted to take into account different environmental aspects like wind and elevation to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand exactly where the bullet will land based upon the sight picture you are viewing with the optic as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended point of impact. Most modern-day rifle optics have about eleven parts which are found inside and externally on the scope. These parts consist of the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage turrets, focus rings, and other components. Learn about the eleven parts of rifle scopes.

Rifle Optic Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of optics. Picking the optimal type of rifle optic is based around what type of shooting you plan to do.

Info on First Focal Plane Scopes

Focal plane scopes (FFP) come with the reticle in front of the magnifying lens. This triggers the reticle to increase in size based upon the amount of zoom being used. The outcome is that the reticle measurements are the same at the amplified distance as they are at the non magnified range. One tick on a mil-dot reticle at 100 yards with no “zoom” is still the very same tick at one hundred yards with 5x “zoom”. These types of scopes work for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away kinds of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where computations are marginal
  • Experienced shooters who recognize their target “hold over” as well as “lead” equations for their long guns
  • Shooters who do not mind the reticle is bigger and requires more visual eyesight space than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Optics

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) feature the reticle behind the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement.

  • Far away kinds of shooting where shooters have additional time to make ballistic estimations
  • Shooting where most of the shots occur within much shorter ranges and spaces
  • Shooters who would like a clearer optic picture without area used up by the larger sized FFP reticle

Glass Zoom

The amount of zoom a scope offers is figured out by the diameter, density, and curvatures of the lenses inside of the rifle scope. The zoom of the scope is the “power” of the scope.

Info About Fixed Single Power Lens Glass

A single power rifle scope or optic will have a magnification number designator like 4×32. This suggests the zoom power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this type of scope can not fluctuate because it is a fixed power optic.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Optic Facts

Variable power rifle scopes use variable power levels. The power change is handled by the power ring part of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Scope Power and Range Correlation

Here are some advised scope power levels and the ranges where they can be successfully used. Remember that higher magnification scopes will not be as effective as lower magnification level optics because too much magnification can be a bad thing. The same idea goes for extended distances where the shooter needs to have sufficient power to see precisely where to best aim the rifle.

Rifle Scope Lens Coating

All modern-day rifle optic lenses are coated. There are different types and qualities of lens coverings. Lens coating is a crucial element of a rifle when contemplating high-end rifle optics and targeting systems. The glass lenses are among the most critical pieces of the optic considering they are what your eye sees through while sighting a rifle in on the target. The finishing on the lenses safeguards the lens surface area and also helps with anti glare from excess natural light and color visibility.

HD Versus ED Lens Coatings

Some scope brands also use “HD” or high-definition lens coverings which use various processes, elements, polarizations, and chemicals to draw out various colors and viewable definition through the lens. Some scope producers use “HD” to refer to “ED” indicating extra-low dispersion glass.

Scope Lens Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating

Various scope lenses can even have different finishings applied to them. All lenses generally have at least some kind of treatment or covering applied to them prior to being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. Since the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It becomes part of the finely tuned optic. It requires a coating to be applied to it so that it will be efficiently usable in numerous types of environments, degrees of sunshine (full VS shaded), and other shooting conditions.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is generally a protective and improving multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can preserve the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single layered lens depends upon the scope maker and just how much you spent on it. Both the manufacturer and amount are indicators of the lens quality.

Some scope producers similarly make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. Being “better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in constructing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Lens Finishes

Water on a lens does not help with maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Numerous top of the line and high-end optic makers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic anti-water finishing.

Rifle Optic Installing Choices

Mounting solutions for scopes come in a few choices. There are the basic scope rings which are individually installed to the optic and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These different kinds of mounts also usually come in quick release versions which use toss levers which enable rifle shooters to rapidly mount and remove the glass.

Hex Key Scope Ring Mounting Solutions

Normal, clamp style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to mount to the flattop design Picatinny scope installation rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two separate rings to support the optic, and are made from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are designed for long distance precision shooting. This type of scope install is wonderful for rifles which need a long lasting, rock solid mount which will not move no matter how much the scope is moved or abuse the rifle takes.

Quick-Release Cantilever Rifle Scope Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly connect and remove a scope from a rifle before reattaching it to a different rifle. Multiple scopes can even be switched out if they all use a compatible style mount. These types of mounts are convenient for rifle platforms which are transported a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protection, or for scopes which are used between numerous rifles or are situationally focused.

About Rifle Optic Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Wetness inside your rifle scope can mess up a day of shooting and your costly optic by triggering fogging and developing residue inside of the scope tube. Many scopes prevent moisture from entering the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are water resistant.

Rifle Scope Gas Purging

Another part of preventing the buildup of moisture within the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Considering that this area is already occupied by the gas, the glass is less altered by temperature level shifts and pressure differences from the outside environment which might potentially allow water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the vacuum which would otherwise exist. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to seek out.
