Rifle Scope Product Details

Hi-Lux Optics Malcolm Series 8X USMC Sniper Riflescope with Mounts and Spring, Matte Black
Product Description
The 8X USMC-SNIPER scope is a piece of history. One of the most recognized names in military sniping during the Vietnam conflict was Marine Corps marksman Carlos Hathcock. The rifle he relied on for very precise long range shot placement was a Match Grade Model 70 Winchester, of.30-06 caliber, topped with an 8x USMC SNIPER scope. Finding one of these scopes in excellent working condition today is next to impossible, since Marine Corps snipers used these optics during WWII.in Korea.and during the early years of Vietnam. Such precision never goes out of style, and Hi-Lux Optics is proud to add an entirely new made model of these older style external adjustment scopes to our Wm. Malcolm line – the 8x USMC SNIPER model. This is an extremely high quality scope, offering all of the precision and features of the best scopes of this style from the past. The one thing we did different has been to use far better glass lenses than you will ever find in an original – no matter who built it. The Wm. Malcolm 8X USMC SNIPER model has become a favorite of shooters competing in Vintage Sniper Rifle matches. Like the original it duplicates, this scope comes with a meticulously machined micrometer click adjustment rear mount, a sliding front mount with recoil return spring, and front lens parallax adjustment. The scopes are marked with the Wm. Malcolm name over the USMC-SNIPER model designation, and each is serial numbered ” as were the original USMC models.

Scope Facts

Rifle scopes permit you to exactly align a rifle at different targets by lining up your eye with the target over a distance. They accomplish this through zoom by utilizing a set of lenses inside the scope. The scope’s alignment can be adjusted for the consideration of many natural things like wind speed and elevation to make up for bullet drop.

The scope’s function is to help the shooter understand precisely where the bullet will hit based on the sight picture you are viewing with the optic as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the target. A lot of modern-day rifle scopes have about eleven parts which are arranged inside and on the exterior of the optic. These scope parts include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage and elevation dials, objective focus rings, and other parts. See all eleven parts of a rifle optical system.

Rifle Scope Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Going for the best type of rifle glass is based around what type of shooting you plan to do.

First Focal Plane Scope Facts

Focal plane scopes (FFP) feature the reticle in front of the magnification lens. These kinds of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Quick acquisition, long distance types of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where computations are minimal
  • Experienced shooters who understand their target “hold over” and “lead” correlations for their firearm
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is bigger and requires more visual sight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Glass Details

Second focal plane scopes (SFP) feature the reticle to the rear of the magnification lens. In the FFP example with the SFP scope, the 5x “zoom” 100 yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick reticle measurement.

  • Far away kinds of shooting where shooters have increased time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most shots happen within shorter ranges and distances
  • Shooters who would like a clearer optic sight picture with less room taken up by the bigger FFP reticle

Zoom for Rifle Optics

The level of scope zoom you need on your scope depends on the type of shooting you want to do. Nearly every type of rifle optic delivers some level of zoom. The volume of zoom a scope gives is identified by the dimension, thickness, and curvatures of the lens glass inside of the rifle optic. The magnification level of the optic is the “power” of the opic. This indicates what the shooter is aiming at through the scope is amplified times the power aspect of what can generally be seen by human eyes.

Fixed Power Lens Rifle Optic Details

A single power rifle scope and optic uses a magnification number designator like 4×32. This implies the magnification power of the scope is 4x power while the objective lens is 32mm. The magnification of this kind of scope can not adjust since it is a set power scope.

About Adjustable Power Lens Rifle Scopes

Variable power rifle scopes use enhanced power. The power change is handled using the power ring part of the scope near the rear of the scope by the eye bell.

Optic Power and Ranges

Here are some suggested scope power settings and the ranges where they can be effectively used. Highly magnified glass will not be as effective as lower magnification level optics because too much magnification can be a bad thing. The very same idea relates to extended ranges where the shooter needs enough power to see where to properly aim the rifle.

Lens Coating for Rifle Optics

All current rifle scope lenses are covered. Lens coating can be a significant element of a shooting system when thinking about high end rifle optics and scope setups.

Details on Glass Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some scope brands also use “HD” or high-definition lens coatings which use various procedures, chemicals, polarizations, and aspects to draw out a wide range of colors and viewable quality through the lens. Some scope producers use “HD” to refer to “ED” implying extra-low dispersion glass.

Single Covering Versus Multi-Coating for Glass

Different scope lenses can even have various coatings applied to them. All lenses normally have at least some type of treatment or covering applied to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic assembly. Due to the fact that the lens isn’t just a raw piece of glass, they require performance enhancing coatings. It becomes part of the carefully tuned optic. It must have a covering put on it so that the lens will be optimally usable in lots of kinds of environments, degrees of sunshine (full VS shade), and other shooting conditions.

This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while minimizing glare and other less advantageous things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the scope. The quality of a single coated lens depends on the scope maker and how much you paid for it.

Some scope producers similarly make it a point to define if their optic lenses are layered or “multi” coated. Being “much better” depends on the maker’s lens treatment technology and the quality of products used in constructing the rifle scope.

Hydrophobic Lens Coatings

Water on a scope lens doesn’t assist with preserving a clear sight picture through a scope in any way. Many top of the line and high-end optic producers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a good example of this kind of treatment. It treats the exterior surfaces of the Steiner optic lens so the H2O molecules can not bind to it or create surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads slide off of the scope to keep a clear, water free sight picture.

Choices for Mounting Optics on Firearms

Mounting approaches for scopes are available in a few options. There are the standard scope rings which are separately installed to the scope and one-piece mounts which cradle the scope. These various kinds of mounts also usually are made in quick release variations which use throw levers which allow rifle shooters to rapidly install and dismount the optics.

Hex Key Rifle Optic Ring Mounts

Standard, clamp-on style mounting scope rings use hex head screws to fix to the flattop design Picatinny scope mounting rails on the tops of rifles. These forms of scope mounts use double individual rings to support the optic, and are normally constructed from 7075 T6 billet aluminum or similar materials which are designed for far away precision shooting. This kind of scope mount is great for rifle systems which are in need of a resilient, unfailing mount which will not change no matter how much the scope is moved about or abuse the rifle takes. These are the type of mounts you should get for a specialized scope setup on a long distance hunting or competition long gun which will almost never need to be changed or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can also be used on the scope mount screws to stop the hex screw threads from backing out after they are mounted safely in place. An example of these rings are the 30mm type from Vortex Optics. The set typically costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Scope Ring Mounting Solutions

These kinds of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly detach a scope from a rifle and reattach it to a different rifle. If they all use a similar style mount, several scopes can also be swapped out. The quick detach design is CNC crafted from anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and the mounting levers attach tightly to a flat top style Picatinny rail. This lets the scope to be sighted in while on the rifle, taken off of the rifle, and remounted back on the rifle while retaining accuracy. These types of mounts come in convenient for rifles which are moved around a lot, to take off the optic from the rifle for protection, or for sight systems which are adopted between several rifles. An example of this mount type is the 30mm mount designed by the Vortex Optics brand. It normally costs around $250 USD

Sealing and Gas Purging for Glass Tubes

Wetness inside your rifle glass can mess up a day of shooting and your pricey optic by inducing fogging and creating residue inside of the scope’s tube. The majority of scopes prevent wetness from going into the optical tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof. Generally, these optics can be submerged within 20 or 30 feet of water before the water pressure can force moisture past the O-rings. This should be sufficient moisture content prevention for common use rifles for hunting and sporting purposes, unless you plan on taking your rifle on your motorboat and are concerned about the scope still functioning if it goes overboard and you can still recover the rifle.

Rifle Optic Gas Purging

Another part of avoiding the buildup of moisture within the rifle scope’s tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Since this area is currently taken up by the gas, the glass is less affected by climate shifts and pressure differences from the outside environment which might potentially enable water vapor to leak in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
