Due to the change in which receivers have #6 and #8 screws from Savage, we recommend you remove and measure one of the screws prior to purchasing our scope mount. This will ensure that you receive the correct screws necessary for your specific application. Some Savage guns (like the .338 Lapua or 110 BA) require 8-40 screws.
This mount is drilled for and provided with 6-48 Hex Head screws. We recommend reviewing our listing below for predrilled #8 mounts if you require #8 screws. Our 8-40 and 6-48 screws utilize the same head design, which allows us to use the same countersink in all of our mounts.

What You Need to Know About Glass

Rifle scopes permit you to precisely align a rifle at various targets by aligning your eye with the target at range. They do this through magnification by utilizing a series of lenses within the scope. The scope’s alignment can be dialed in to account for separate natural elements like wind and elevation decreases to account for bullet drop.

The scope’s purpose is to help shooters understand precisely where the bullet will hit based on the sight picture you are viewing via the scope as you line up the scope’s crosshair or reticle with the intended target. Many modern rifle scopes and optics have around eleven parts which are found inside and outside of the scope body. These optic pieces include the rifle scope’s body, lenses, windage turrets or dials, focus rings, and other elements. See all eleven parts of a rifle optical system.

Rifle Scope Styles

Rifle scopes can be either “first focal plane” or “second focal plane” type of scopes. Opting for the best type of rifle glass is based around what type of shooting you plan to do.

First Focal Plane Glass

Focal plane scopes (FFP) include the reticle in front of the zoom lens. These types of scopes are useful for:

  • Quick acquisition, far away kinds of shooting
  • Shooting circumstances where estimations are low
  • Experienced shooters who understand their target “hold over” as well as “lead” equations for their firearms
  • Shooters who don’t mind the reticle is bigger and occupies more visual sight area than a SFP reticle

Second Focal Plane Scopes

Second focal plane optics (SFP) include the reticle to the rear of the magnification lens. This causes the reticle to stay at the very same overall size relative to the quantity of zoom being used. The end result is that the reticle dimensions adjust based upon the zoom employed to shoot over greater distances considering the reticle markings present different increments which can vary with the magnification level. In the FFP illustration with the SFP glass, the 5x “zoom” one hundred yard tick reticle measurement would be 1/5th of the non “zoom” tick measurement. These styles of scopes are beneficial for:

  • Far away styles of shooting where shooters have more time to make ballistic computations
  • Shooting where most of the shots occur within much shorter ranges and distances
  • Shooters who choose a clearer optic sight picture without space used up by the enlarged FFP reticle

About Rifle Optic Zoom

The level of scope zoom you need on your scope depends upon the type of shooting you intend to do. Pretty much every type of rifle glass offers some amount of magnification. The level of zoom a scope gives is identified by the size, density, and curves of the lenses within the rifle scope. The magnification level of the scope is the “power” of the scope. This suggests what the shooter is observing through the scope is amplified times the power factor of what can generally be seen by human eyes.

Info About Fixed Single Power Lens Rifle Glass

A single power rifle scope comes with a magnification number designator like 4×32. This indicates the zoom power of the scope is 4x power and the objective lens is 32mm. The zoom of this kind of optic can not adjust because it is a fixed power optic.

Variable Power Lens Rifle Scopes

Variable power rifle scopes have adjustable power. These types of scopes will list the zoom amount in a format like 2-10×32. These numbers mean the zoom of the scope could be set between 2x and 10x power. This also incorporates the powers in-between 2 and 10. The power adaptation is accomplished using the power ring component of the scope near the back of the scope by the eye bell.

Rifle Scope Power and Range Correlation

Here are some recommended scope power settings and the ranges where they can be effectively used. Highly magnified glass will not be as efficient as lower powered rifle scope glass because too much zoom can be a bad thing. The exact same idea applies to extended ranges where the shooter needs to have increased power to see where to properly aim the rifle at the target.

Details on Lens Coating

All modern-day rifle glass lenses are layered. Lens finish is a vital aspect of a shooting platform when thinking about high end rifle optics and scope setups.

Details on Lens Coatings – HD Versus ED

Some rifle scope suppliers also use “HD” or high-def glass coatings that employ different processes, rare earth compounds, polarizations, and elements to enhance separate colors and viewable target definition through the lens. This HD finish is frequently used with higher density lens glass which brings down light’s opportunity to refract through the lens glass. Some scope manufacturers use “HD” to describe “ED” meaning extra-low dispersion glass. ED handles how certain colors are represented on the chromatic spectrum and the chromatic aberration or deviance which is also called color distortion or fringing. Chromatic aberration may be visible around objects with hard edges and shapes as light hits the object from particular angles.

Info on Single Coating Versus Multi-Coating

Different optic lenses can also have different finishings used to them. All lenses usually have at least some type of treatment or covering applied to them before being used in a rifle scope or optic.

Single layered lenses have a treatment applied to them which is generally a protective and improving multi-purpose treatment. This lens treatment can safeguard the lens from scratches while decreasing glare and other less beneficial things experienced in the shooting environment while sighting in with the optic. The quality of a single layered lens depends on the scope company and the amount you spent paying for it. Both are signs of the lens quality.

Some scope manufacturers also make it a point to specify if their optic lenses are coated or “multi” coated. This means the lens has had numerous treatments applied to the surfaces of the glass. If a lens gets several treatments, it can show that a maker is taking several actions to combat different natural aspects like an anti-glare covering, a scratch resistant anti-abrasion finish, followed by a hydrophilic finishing. This also does not necessarily suggest the multi-coated lens will perform better than a single covered lens. Being “better” is dependent on the producer’s lens treatment technology and the quality of glass used in developing the rifle optic.

Hydrophobic Lens Coatings

Water on a lens doesn’t improve maintaining a clear sight picture through a scope at all. Numerous top of the line or premium scope manufacturers will coat their lenses with a hydrophobic or hydrophilic coating. The Steiner Optics Nano-Protection is a fine example of this kind of treatment. It deals with the surface of the Steiner optic lens so the water particles can not bind to it or create surface tension. The outcome is that the water beads sheet off of the scope to maintain a clear, water free sight picture.

Alternatives for Mounting Scopes on Firearms

Mounting options for scopes come in a few choices. There are the standard scope rings which are separately installed to the scope and one-piece scope mounts which cradle the scope. These various types of mounts also typically can be found in quick release versions which use toss levers which allow rifle operators to rapidly install and remove the scope.

Scope Mounts with Hex Key Rings

Basic, clamp-on type mounting optic rings use hex head screws to position to the flattop style Picatinny scope mounting rails on rifles. These types of scope mounts use two detached rings to support the scope, and are usually constructed from 7075 T6 billet aluminum which are created for long distance accuracy shooting. This form of scope mount is excellent for rifle systems which are in need of a resilient, hard use mount which will not shift despite just how much the scope is moved or jarring the rifle takes. These are the style of mounts you want for a faithful scope setup on a reach out and touch someone scouting or tournament long gun which will hardly ever need to be changed or adjusted. Blue 242 Loctite threadlocker can also be used on the mount screws to stop the hex screw threads from backing out after they are installed safely in position. An example of these mounting rings are the 30mm type made by Vortex Optics. The set usually costs around $200 USD

Quick-Release Cantilever Optic Rings

These types of quick-release rifle scope mounts can be used to quickly attach and remove a scope from a rifle before reattaching it to a different rifle. Several scopes can also be swapped out if they all use a compatible design mount. These types of mounts are handy for rifle platforms which are transported a lot, to remove the optic from the rifle for protecting the scope, or for optics which are used between numerous rifles.

Details on Glass Tube Sealing and Gas Purging

Moisture inside your rifle optic can mess up a day of shooting and your costly optic by triggering fogging and creating residue inside of the scope tube. The majority of scopes avoid wetness from getting in the scope tube with a system of sealing O-rings which are waterproof.

Optic Gas Purging

Another part of avoiding the accumulation of moisture within the rifle scope tube is filling the tube with a gas like nitrogen. Because this space is currently taken up by the gas, the glass is less affected by temperature level shifts and pressure differences from the outside environment which may potentially allow water vapor to permeate in around the seals to fill the void which would otherwise be there. These are good qualities of a good rifle scope to look for.
