Airsoft Pistol Type Additional Information

Learn more about airsoft sidearms and how you can use them as backup guns or as main weapons on the airsoft playing field. Practicing your accuracy and getting the best pistol can make an impact in improving your shots. Handguns, naturally, are short range airsoft weapons. They are often created after genuine pistols or clones of genuine pistols. Numerous airsoft sidearms are completely licensed releases of their actual handgun counterparts. These airsoft guns can function in the same ways and look and feel identically to the real guns they are designed after while firing airsoft BBs rather than real bullets.

There are a variety of airsoft handguns consisting of CO2, green gas or propane (blowback and non-blowback), spring powered, and AEG automatic electric handguns. Each of these varieties of pistols has negatives and positives associated with them. Learning more about the styles of airsoft handguns allows you to make a decision on which type is right for you and your airsoft gameplay style.

CO2 Airsoft Sidearm Details

CO2 airsoft guns are one of the most popular and resilient types of sidearms. These pistols use sealed CO2 gas cylinders to move airsoft BBs out of the gun barrel.

These types of airsoft pistols are good for playing airsoft in cooler temperatures considering that the high pressure CO2 gas is less prone to performance decreases caused by temperature levels. This offers good FPS and shot consistency while playing airsoft in the wintertime for instance where other varieties of handguns like green gas stop performing or barely shoot airsoft BBs.

Information About CO2 Gas and CO2 Cartridges

CO2 airsoft sidearms are powered by basic 12 gram CO2 cartridge cylinders. These cartridges look similar to a chrome metal cylinder and contain high-pressure CO2 gas consisting of 1 carbon atom and 2 oxygen atoms, consequently the molecular formula is “C + O2 “. These atoms are attached in the following sequence “O= C =O”. The gas is held in the 12 gram cartridge cylinders under really high pressure of approximately ~ 800psi which correlates to 55bar.

The CO2 gas cylinders cannot be used multiple times and you can usually buy them in packs of 12, 20, 50, or 100 12 gram CO2 cartridge sets. They come sealed to preserve the CO2 gas safely and securely within, but when they are opened (firing them in an airsoft handgun breaks the seal) they will start to lose pressure if they are not used up. You must attempt to burn up the whole CO2 cartridge the same day you open the seal. If the airsoft matches end and you still have CO2 gas leftover, use the chance to do some handgun target practice and use up the remainder of the surplus gas. There is no gas level sign on the cartridge so you have to shoot until the pistol stops firing BBs.

CO2 cartridges can be stored for a while if the cylinders are stored sealed. They come with a maker’s best used by date normally noted on the package or cylinder, but they will likely last for an extended time past this date if the cartridge seals are not tampered with.

Green Gas Airsoft Handgun Info

Green gas airsoft handguns are comparable to CO2 handguns, but they do not use CO2 cartridges. The operational impact on the battlefield and green gas weapon efficiency is virtually the very same as CO2 pistols with the weapons around 300+ FPS.

The green gas is housed in the pistol’s mag which can typically hold in-between 15 to 20+ 6mm airsoft BBs depending upon the gun model. A sequence of valves, rubberized gaskets, and o-rings keep the propane stored in the pistol magazine prior to when the handgun’s trigger is pulled. It is a good habit to refill and top off the propane reserves in the pistol mag each time you reload it. Pistol-wielding airsoft players can even take additional bottles of green gas or propane in the field for reloading mags between lulls in the fight or in-between game play.

When playing with a green gas sidearm on the airsoft field or arena as a secondary or primary gun, additional pistol mags are advised for quickly reloading. Having additional magazines allows you to join in the action during firefights or while clearing structures in CQB (close quarters combat) room-to-room combat.

Green gas handguns are ideal for CQB at airsoft fields since rifles and full-sized AEGs are usually not allowed to be used during indoor shooting. This is an essential safety standard due to the close range distance of airsoft players during shooting engagements. While green gas handguns still fire airsoft BBs at about 300 FPS, the shorter handgun barrel assists to keep the joules and energy forcing the BB at a decreased level compared to AEGs, airsoft rifles, sniper rifles, and other long guns.

About Green Gas Blowback (GBB) VS Green Gas Non-blowback

There are 2 different varieties of green gas airsoft handguns. There are green gas blowback pistols or GBBs where the slide moves and non-blowback handguns. The green gas non-blowback airsoft pistols use a fixed slide which does not move.

About GBB and Green Gas Limits

While green gas usually performs very well, it does have drawbacks. When green gas and GBB guns are used over the winter airsoft games in the snow or in colder temperatures (such as below 32 deg F). Since the green gas or propane gas is stored in the pistol mag using silicone seals and gaskets, cold temperatures can affect these seals and make the stored gas to escape prior to shooting. This can cause the airsoft BBs to just shoot a couple of feet (like 10 feet in cold temps ) when it would ordinarily shoot airsoft BBs over 100+ feet in warmer temperatures).

One solution to this issue is to keep the GBB pistol magazines warmer by putting them next to your body, beside a heater, or inside your jacket before game play starts. If you truly want to play with a reliable airsoft handgun in the cold, it may also be worth getting a CO2 variation of your preferred handgun.

Spring Airsoft Sidearm Details

Spring airsoft pistols are powered by powerful coil springs that propel the BBs out of the pistol barrel. The manual functioning of reloading, firing, and cocking spring guns makes the fire rate much slower than CO2 and GBB guns.

Spring sidearms perform the best in springer battles where players can just use related, single shot spring guns or as an alternative backup weapon for CQB environments when you can usually surprise other airsoft game players to get an assured one-shot-one-kill. In the latter situation, a rapid second follow-up shot will not be required because the other opponent is now hit and out of the gameplay or going back to respawn. Take care when engaging numerous players because the spring airsoft gun only shoots as quickly as you can re-chamber an airsoft BB manually.

About Spring Pistol Performance

Spring guns are really effective under the ideal conditions. Spring pistols can commonly fire up to 120 feet or more with 0.12 gram BBs but target accuracy reduces rapidly.

Details About AEG Automatic Electric Airsoft Pistols

AEG airsoft handguns or AEPs (automatic electric pistols) are also a viable option to bring as a secondary weapon on the airsoft field. These automatic electric pistols are commonly powered by mini stick batteries in the gun’s butt. They operate just like an AEG rifle and use forced air with electrically cycled gearboxes and cylinders to shoot airsoft BBs quickly and very quickly at that.

AEG pistol magazines generally can hold about 20 to 30 airsoft BBs. The pistols can fire airsoft BBs approximately about 300 FPS when loaded with 0.12g airsoft BBs or about 200 to 250 FPS using 0.20g airsoft BBs. The electric battery powered gearbox system can shoot around 700+ 6mm BBs per minute which depends on if you have enough spare mags to reload with and the battery lasts that long. These AEP handguns can accurately shoot airsoft BBs at about 150 foot ranges.

AEG Pistol Quality and Performance

AEG handgun quality has actually grown significantly in the last few years. The early generation AEP guns were a bit sketchy and unreliable, however the more recent designs have the deficiencies resolved and make efficient airsoft secondary weapons. They can be further modified with increased mag capacities and by accommodating larger batteries.

A large benefit of using an AEG handgun is that you have the ability to rewire the connectors to use a larger capacity battery. Depending on the AEG handgun design, you can get a sizable output in functionality by using a 2 cell Lipo battery (like an 2S Lipo) instead of the stock battery.

Which Airsoft Handgun is Right for Me?

Deciding on the right airsoft pistol for you depends upon how much you can afford to spend, how much you desire to play airsoft with it, and where you hope to play. If you can afford $100 or more to invest in your airsoft pistol, look at a green gas blowback or GBB handgun or AEG pistol. These are typically the top-tier guns, have the most effective build qualities, and could be a pretty good pistol to purchase. If you have around fifty to one-hundred dollars to devote to your airsoft gun purchase, look at a CO2 pistol or a cheaper GBB pistol. Mid-tier guns like these will still be fun to play with and will be durable sidearms. Look for a lower end CO2 or spring handgun if you have less than fifty dollars. You can still find a heavy-duty airsoft handgun to use for the pistol airsoft guns.
