How to Choose an Airsoft Handgun
Find information about airsoft handguns and sidearms and how you can use them as extra guns or as primary weapons on the airsoft playing field. A lot of airsoft handguns are completely manufactured replications of their real gun equivalents and function and appear in the exact same ways while shooting airsoft BBs rather than real bullets.
There are several kinds of airsoft sidearms including CO2, green gas or propane (blowback and non-blowback), spring powered, and AEG automatic electric gun pistols. Each of these types of sidearms have negatives and positives associated with them. Learning about the styles of airsoft pistols lets you choose which type is right for you and your airsoft gameplay style.
Details About CO2 Airsoft Pistols
CO2 airsoft guns are one of the most standard and sturdy types of handguns. These handguns use sealed CO2 gas cylinders to push airsoft BBs out of the pistol barrel.
These types of airsoft handguns are good for playing in cold weather conditions due to the fact that the compressed CO2 gas is less vulnerable to performance variations with temperature. This provides great FPS and shot consistency while playing airsoft in the cold weather for example where other kinds of guns like green gas cease to work or barely shoot airsoft BBs.
About CO2 Gas and CO2 Cartridges
CO2 airsoft handguns are powered by regular 12 gram CO2 cartridges. These cartridges resemble a shiny metallic cylinder and hold high pressure CO2 gas made up of one carbon atom and a couple of oxygen atoms thus the molecular formula of “C + O2”.
They come sealed to keep the CO2 gas securely within, but the moment they are opened (shooting them inside of an airsoft gun breaks the seal) they will begin to lose pressure if they are left unused. If the airsoft matches end and you still have CO2 gas left, use the chance to do some pistol target practice and use up the rest of the excess gas.
If they are kept sealed, CO2 cartridges have a long storage life. They do have the maker’s use by date usually listed on the package or cartridge, however, they will last for a prolonged time past this date if the cartridge seal is not punctured.
Green Gas Airsoft Handguns
Green gas airsoft pistols are comparable to CO2 pistols, however they use green gas or propane instead of CO2 cartridges. The effect on the battlefield and green gas weapon performance is practically the same as CO2 handguns with the weapons around 300+ FPS.
The propane gas is stashed in the handgun’s magazine that can typically hold in-between 15 to 20+ BBs depending on the handgun type. A series of valves, rubberized gaskets, and silicone o-rings keep the gas stored in the mag till the handgun’s trigger is squeezed.
When running a green gas pistol on the airsoft field as a primary or secondary gun, additional handgun mags are advised for rapidly reloading and engaging the op force. Having extra magazines on-hand allows you to re engage in the action in the middle of firefights or while clearing structures in CQB (close quarters combat) room-to-room fighting.
Green gas pistols are ideal for CQB at airsoft fields considering that rifles, long guns, and full-sized AEGs are typically not approved to be used for indoor engagements. This is an essential safety guideline due to the close quarters distance of players during the shooting engagements and potential for players to get hurt. While green gas pistols can still fire airsoft BBs at around 300 FPS, the short handgun barrel helps to keep the joules and energy pushing the BB lower compared to airsoft rifles, sniper rifles, and other long guns.
About Green Gas Blowback (GBB) VS Green Gas Non-blowback
There are 2 different varieties of green gas airsoft handguns. There are green gas blowback pistols or GBBs. The green gas non-blowback airsoft handguns have a stationary slide which does not move.
About GBB and Green Gas Limitations
While green gas typically works very well, it does have limits. When they are used during the winter airsoft games in the snow or in cold weather (such as under 32 degrees F). Given that the green gas or propane is kept in the weapon’s mag using rubber seals, o-rings, and gaskets, low temperatures can negatively impact these seals and make the stored gas to escape before firing the pistol. This can make the airsoft BBs to only shoot several feet (like 10 feet in the cold ) when it would usually shoot airsoft BBs over 100+ foot distances in warmer temperatures).
One option to fix this issue is to try to keep the GBB pistol mags warmer by holding them near your body before airsoft game play. This can help to warm up the rubber gaskets and better seal in the green gas. It can also be worth getting a CO2 version of your preferred handgun if you actually prefer to play airsoft with a dependable airsoft pistol in the cold. The CO2 cartridges come sealed and the gun shoots much better in sub-freezing temps and while playing in the snow.
Spring Airsoft Pistol Information
Spring airsoft guns are powered by powerful coil springs that propel the airsoft BBs down the handgun barrel. They are generally able to only shoot one BB. The manual functioning of reloading, shooting, and cocking spring guns makes the fire rate much slower than CO2 and GBB pistols. When facing other airsoft players on the airsoft field with upgraded rifles, fully automatic airsoft AEG assault rifles, sniper rifles, and CO2, green gas, or GBB airsoft pistols, this makes spring airsoft pistols entertaining to use, however less effective.
Spring airsoft guns perform best in springer battles where game players can exclusively use comparable, single shot spring guns or as a transition backup weapon for CQB buildings when you can often quietly sneak up on other airsoft players to get an assured one-shot-one-kill. In the latter circumstance, a rapid second follow-up shot isn’t required due to the fact that the other opponent is already hit by the first BB and out of the game or running back to respawn. When engaging many different attackers because the springer only fires as quickly as you can re-chamber an airsoft BB by hand, be cautious.
About Spring Pistol Effectiveness
Spring guns are extremely useful under the correct situations. Spring pistols can normally shoot up to 120 feet or more with 0.12g BBs however the ability to hit targets decreases quickly.
AEG Automatic Electric Airsoft Pistol Facts
AEG airsoft pistols or AEPs (automatic electric pistols) are also a viable option to bring as a secondary weapon on the airsoft field. These automatic electric pistols are normally powered by mini stick batteries in the weapon’s butt. They work similar to an AEG rifle and use forced air pumped through electrically cycled gearboxes, pistons, and cylinders to shoot airsoft BBs quickly and rapidly.
AEG pistol mags typically carry about 20 to 30 airsoft BBs. The handguns can fire airsoft BBs up to about 300 FPS when loaded with 0.12g airsoft BBs or 200 to 250 FPS when loaded with 0.20g airsoft BBs. The electrically powered gearbox system can shoot around 700+ BBs per minute which is estimated if you have enough magazines to reload (after every 20 to 30 rounds) and the battery lasts that long. These pistols can accurately fire airsoft BBs at around 150 foot distances.
AEG Handgun Quality and Efficiency
AEG handgun quality has actually grown significantly in the last few years. The early generations were a little bit sketchy and unreliable, but the latest models have the problems resolved and make reliable airsoft secondary guns. They can be modified with enhanced mag capacities as well as accommodating bigger batteries.
A significant advantage of using an AEG pistol is that you have the capability to rewire the adapters to use a more substantial battery. Depending on the AEG handgun type, you can gain a huge increase in performance by adopting a two cell Lipo battery (2S Lipo) rather than the stock battery.
Which Airsoft Sidearm is Right for Me?
If you have over $100 to spend on your airsoft pistol, check out a green gas blowback pistol or AEG pistol. If you have in-between fifty to one-hundred dollars to invest, look at a CO2 pistol or cheaper GBB handgun. You can still look for a durable airsoft handgun by checking out lower end pistols and by trading with other players in the used airsoft gun market if you are trying to save money.
