Info About the Varieties of Airsoft Pistols
Learn more about airsoft pistols and sidearms and how you can use them as backup weapons or as primary weapons on the airsoft playing field. Practicing your accuracy and getting the best sidearm can make an impact in aiming your shots. Handguns, naturally, are much shorter range airsoft guns. They are commonly crafted after actual handguns or replicas of genuine pistols. A lot of airsoft pistols are fully licensed versions of their real-world gun counterparts. These airsoft guns can function (sans shooting bullets) in the same ways and visually look similarly to the real guns they are designed around while blasting airsoft BBs in place of genuine bullets.
There are several varieties of airsoft pistols consisting of CO2, green gas (blowback and non-blowback), spring powered, and AEG automatic electric pistols. Each of these forms of pistols has benefits and differences connected with them. Learning about the kinds of airsoft pistols allows you to choose which type is right for you and your airsoft gameplay style.
CO2 Airsoft Pistol Details
CO2 airsoft handguns are one of the most long lasting and typical types of handguns. These handguns use high pressure CO2 gas to force airsoft BBs out of the gun barrel.
These types of airsoft pistols are exceptional for playing in colder temperatures because the compressed CO2 gas is less susceptible to variation caused by low temperature. This fact provides exceptional FPS and shot consistency while playing airsoft in the cold weather for example where other types of pistols like green gas stuffer from low performance or hardly shoot airsoft BBs.
Information About CO2 Gas and CO2 Cylinders
CO2 airsoft guns are powered by standard 12 gram CO2 cartridges. These cartridges look like a shiny steel cylinder and contain high pressured CO2 gas consisting of 1 carbon atom and a couple of oxygen atoms, therefore the molecular formula comes out to be “C + O2 “. These atoms are attached in the following sequence “O= C =O”. The gas is held in the 12 gram cylinders under very high pressure of approximately ~ 800psi that converts to 55bar.
The CO2 gas cartridge cylinders cannot be used multiple times and you can commonly buy them in packs of 12, 20, 50, or 100 12 gram CO2 cartridge sets. They come sealed to preserve the CO2 gas securely inside, but the moment they are punctured (firing them in an airsoft weapon breaks the cartridge seal) they will begin to lose pressure if they are not used up. You must attempt to run through the whole CO2 cartridge the very same day you open the seal. If the airsoft matches end and you still have CO2 gas leftover, use the opportunity to do some pistol target practice and expend the remaining excess gas. There is no gas level guide on the cartridge so you have to shoot until the gun stops firing airsoft BBs.
CO2 cartridges can be stored for a while if they are kept sealed. They have the supplier’s use by date normally noted on the box or cartridge, however they may stay pressurized for an extended time past this date if the cartridge seal is not broken.
Info About Green Gas Airsoft Handguns
Green gas airsoft handguns are similar to CO2 guns, however they do not use CO2 cartridges. Instead, they use green gas or propane gas for propellant to shoot the airsoft pellets. The operational impact on game play and green gas weapon efficiency is basically the same as CO2 pistols with the weapons shooting up to about 300+ feet per second (FPS). Shots are quickly fired in fully-automatic or semi-automatic shooting modes and can hit targets at very short to mid-range distances.
The green gas is held in the pistol’s grip within the mag and can often hold roughly 15 to 20+ airsoft BBs depending on the pistol style. A bunch of valves, rubber stoppers, and seals keep the propane stored in the pistol mag until the pistol’s trigger is squeezed. It is a good idea to fill up and top off the green gas in your pistol mag each time you reload it. Pistol-wielding players can also take additional bottles of propane gas in the field for refilling magazines between lulls in the war or between gameplay.
When bringing a green gas sidearm on the airsoft field or arena as a backup or main gun, additional handgun magazines are highly recommended for quickly reloading and engaging opponents. Having additional mags on-hand allows you to reengage in the action throughout firefights or while sweeping structures in CQB (close quarters combat) room-to-room fights.
Green gas pistols are great for CQB at airsoft fields considering that rifles and full-sized AEGs are usually not authorized to be used during indoor engagements. This is a safety guideline due to the close quarters proximity of gamers during shooting engagements and the potential for players to be injured. While green gas pistols still fire airsoft BBs at about 300 FPS, the shorter handgun barrel aids to keep the joules and energy sending the BB at a decreased level compared to AEGs, sniper rifles, and other long guns.
About Green Gas Blowback (GBB) VS Green Gas Non-blowback
There are 2 different varieties of green gas airsoft handguns. There are green gas blowback pistols or GBBs where the slide moves and non-blowback handguns. The green gas non-blowback airsoft pistols have a fixed slide which does not move.
About GBB and Green Gas Limits
Due to the fact that the green gas or propane gas is housed in the magazine by rubber seals, o-rings, and gaskets, the cold can influence these o-rings and cause the gas to leak out before shooting the gun. This can cause the airsoft BBs to only land a couple of feet away (like 10 feet in cold temps ) when the green gas handgun would normally shoot 6mm BBs over 100+ feet in warmer weather conditions).
One fix to this issue is to keep the GBB pistol mags warmer by positioning them next to your body or near a heat source before the airsoft game play. If you truly need to play with a reliable airsoft handgun in the cold, it might also be worth getting a CO2 style of your preferred pistol.
Spring Airsoft Pistols
Spring airsoft guns are powered by powerful springs that propel the airsoft BBs down the handgun barrel. They are usually one shot. The manual action of reloading, firing, and cocking spring guns makes the fire rate much slower than CO2, green gas, and GBB handguns. This makes them enjoyable to use, yet they can be less useful when engaging players on the airsoft field with upgraded weapons, automatic airsoft AEG assault rifles and CO2, green gas, or GBB airsoft handguns.
Spring handguns work best in springer wars where participants can exclusively use similar, single shot spring guns or as a close quarters backup weapon for CQB environments when you can frequently surprise other airsoft opponents to get a guaranteed one-shot-one-kill. In the latter scenario, a quick 2nd followup shot isn’t needed due to the fact that the other player is already hit by the first shot and out of the gameplay or headed back to respawn. When engaging numerous adversaries because the spring airsoft gun only shoots as quickly as you can re-chamber an airsoft BB by hand, be careful.
About Spring Pistol Performance
Spring handguns are very efficient under the appropriate scenarios and airsoft games. Their FPS often chronos at around 250 FPS to 300 FPS with lighter 0.12 gram airsoft BBs. These pistols usually fire the lighter weight airsoft BBs since the pitched springs are less effective than other kinds of airsoft guns like rifles. Spring handguns can usually engage targets at ranges of up to 120 feet or more with 0.12 gram BBs but accuracy is reduced quickly. Using normal 0.20g weight airsoft BBs, you will very likely have a reduced range of around 60 to 80 feet with enhanced precision.
Facts About AEG Automatic Electric Airsoft Handguns
AEG airsoft sidearms or AEPs (automatic electric pistols) are also a viable option to bring as a secondary gun on the airsoft field. These automatic electric pistols are commonly powered by mini stick batteries in the gun’s grip. They function similar to an AEG SMG and use forced air forced through electrically cycled pistons and gearboxes to fire airsoft BBs out of the barrel and very quickly at that.
AEG handgun magazines usually can carry around 20 to 30 airsoft BBs. The pistols can shoot airsoft BBs as high as about 300 FPS with 0.12 gram airsoft BBs or 200 to 250 FPS using 0.20 gram airsoft BBs. The electrical gearbox system can shoot around 700+ 6mm BBs per minute which is estimated if you have enough spare magazines to reload and the battery maintains its charge that long. These pistols can precisely fire airsoft BBs at around 150 foot ranges.
AEG Handgun Quality and Efficiency
AEG handgun quality has actually increased considerably over the last few years. The earliest gens were a little bit sketchy and unreliable, but the latest versions have most of the issues worked out and make reliable airsoft backup weapons. They can be improved with increased magazine storage capacities and by accommodating more powerful batteries.
A huge benefit of using an AEG pistol is that you have the ability to rewire the connections to use a larger battery. Depending on the AEG pistol model, you can gain a substantial output in efficiency by adopting a two cell Lipo battery (like an 2S Lipo) rather than the stock battery.
What Airsoft Sidearm is Best for Me?
Looking for the ideal airsoft handgun for you depends upon how much you can afford to spend, how often you plan to play airsoft with it, and where you decide to play. Take a look at a green gas blowback pistol or automatic electric AEP handgun if you have more than one-hundred dollars to invest on your airsoft handgun. These are normally the top of the line, have great performance, and could be a pretty good investment. Look into a CO2 handgun or cheaper green gas GBB pistol if you have in-between fifty to one-hundred dollars to invest. Mid-tier guns like these will still get the job done and will be tough sidearms. If you have less than fifty dollars, search for a lower end CO2 or springer handgun. You can still buy a well-built airsoft handgun to use for the handgun airsoft guns.
