Information on Airsoft Handgun Kinds
Find information about airsoft pistols and sidearms and how you can use them as extra guns or as main weapons on the airsoft playing field. Numerous airsoft handguns are completely manufactured and licensed versions of their genuine handgun counterparts and look and run in the same ways while shooting airsoft BBs instead of real bullets.
There are a number of types of airsoft pistols such as CO2, propane or green gas (blowback and non-blowback), spring powered, and AEG automatic electric gun pistols. Each of these styles of sidearms has benefits and differences associated with them. Learning about the types of airsoft sidearms allows you to make a decision on which type is right for you and your airsoft gameplay style.
About CO2 Airsoft Pistols
CO2 airsoft sidearms are among the most popular and sturdy varieties of pistols. They are all-season weapons and operate well in many types of temperatures, weather and environments. These handguns use pressurized CO2 gas to move airsoft BBs down the pistol barrel. The CO2 cartridge stores the gas within a cylinder and is generally located in the handgun’s mag inside the handle.
These kinds of airsoft weapons are good choices for airsoft games in cooler weather conditions because the pressurized CO2 gas is stored in the sealed cylinders and less susceptible to performance decreases by low temperatures. This provides very good FPS and shot consistency while playing airsoft in the wintertime for instance where other types of pistols like green gas stop operating or hardly fire BBs.
About CO2 Gas and CO2 Cartridge Cylinders
CO2 airsoft handguns are powered by conventional 12 gram CO2 cartridge cylinders. These cartridges look like a metal cylinder and contain high pressured CO2 gas comprised of 1 carbon atom and two oxygen atoms for this reason the molecular formula of “C + O2”.
The CO2 gas cylinders are not refillable and you can typically order them in packs of 12, 20, 50, or 100 12 gram CO2 cartridges. They come sealed to keep the CO2 gas safely and securely within, but once they are opened (firing them inside of an airsoft handgun breaks the seal) cartridges will start to lose pressure if they are left unused. You need to attempt to run through the entire CO2 cartridge the very same day you open the seal. Use the opportunity to do some handgun target practice and use up the rest of the additional gas if the airsoft matches end and you still have CO2 gas left. There is no gas level gauge on the cartridge so you need to shoot until the weapon stops shooting airsoft BBs.
If they are kept sealed, CO2 cartridges have a long storage life. They come with the maker’s use by date normally noted on the package or cartridge, but they will likely survive for a prolonged period of time past this date if the cartridge seal is not broken.
Green Gas Airsoft Sidearms
Green gas airsoft sidearms resemble CO2 handguns, however they do not use CO2 cartridges. Rather, they use green gas or propane gas for propellant to shoot 6mm airsoft pellets. The result on game play and green gas pistol effectiveness is almost the same as CO2 pistols with the guns shooting up to 300+ FPS. Shots are rapidly fired in semi-automatic or automatic shooting modes and can hit targets at shorter to mid-range proximities.
The green gas is held in the handgun’s grip within the mag and can often hold in-between 15 to 20+ BBs based on the gun design. A set of valves, silicone stoppers, and o-rings keep the green gas stored in the magazine till the pistol’s trigger is pulled. It is a good choice to top off and refill your green gas in your pistol mag each time you reload it. Pistol-wielding airsoft players can also bring additional bottles of propane in the field for reloading mags between lulls in the war or between gameplay.
When playing with a green gas pistol on the airsoft field or arena as a primary or backup gun, bringing additional handgun mags is strongly recommended for quickly reloading and engaging opponents. Having extra magazines helps you re engage in the action throughout firefights or while sweeping structures in CQB (close quarters combat) room-to-room fights.
Green gas handguns are great for CQB at airsoft fields because rifles, long guns, and full-sized AEGs are usually not enabled to be used for indoor engagements. This is a safety guideline because of the close quarters proximity of gamers during shooting engagements and the potential for players to be injured. While green gas handguns still shoot airsoft BBs at around 300 FPS, the shorter handgun barrel aids to keep the joules and energy pushing the BB at a lower level compared to AEGs, airsoft rifles, sniper rifles, and other long guns.
Thinking About Green Gas Blowback (GBB) VS Green Gas Non-blowback
There are 2 various varieties of green gas airsoft handguns. There are green gas blowback pistols or GBBs and non-blowback pistols. The green gas non-blowback airsoft handguns use a stationary slide which does not move.
About GBB and Green Gas Limits
Because the green gas or propane is held in the magazine using rubber seals, o-rings, and gaskets, cold weather can influence these o-rings and cause the gas to escape prior to shooting. The decrease in pressure can make the airsoft BBs to merely land a number of feet away (like 10 feet in cold weather ) when the pistol would typically shoot 6mm BBs over 100+ foot distances in warmer temps).
One option to this issue is to make the GBB pistol mags warmer by positioning them next to your body or by a heater before game play starts. If you truly want to play with a reputable airsoft pistol in the cold, it might additionally be worth getting a CO2 version of your preferred handgun.
Details About Spring Airsoft Sidearms
Spring airsoft pistols are powered by powerful springs that launch the BBs out of the gun barrel. The manual actions of cocking, firing, and reloading spring handguns makes the fire rate much slower than CO2, green gas, and GBB airsoft guns.
Spring airsoft guns perform best in springer wars where game players can just use similar, single shot spring handguns or as a close quarters combat weapon for CQB settings when you can frequently quietly sneak up on other airsoft players to get an assured one-shot-one-kill. In the latter scenario, a rapid second follow-up shot is not called for since the other player is now hit by the first BB and out of the gameplay or moving back to respawn. When engaging several attackers because the spring gun just fires as quick as you can re-chamber an airsoft BB by hand, be cautious.
About Spring Pistol Effectiveness
Spring guns are remarkably efficient under the appropriate situations. Their FPS often chronos at around 250 FPS to 300 FPS with lighter weight 0.12g airsoft BBs. These handguns generally fire the lighter weight airsoft BBs because the springs are less powerful than other kinds of airsoft weapons. Spring pistols can generally be accurate at up to 120 feet or more with 0.12g BBs but precision is reduced rapidly. Using standard 0.20 gram weight airsoft BBs, you will most likely have a reduced shooting distance of around 60 to 80 feet with heightened accuracy.
AEG Automatic Electric Airsoft Pistols
AEG airsoft handguns or AEPs (automatic electric pistols) are definitely a viable option to bring into the field as a backup weapon on the airsoft field. These automatic electric handguns are commonly powered by mini stick batteries in the pistol’s grip. They function just like an AEG gun and use forced air pumped through electrically cycled pistons, gearboxes, and cylinders to shoot airsoft BBs quickly and very quickly at that.
AEG pistol mags generally can carry about 20 to 30 airsoft BBs. The pistols can launch airsoft BBs up to around 300 FPS with 0.12g airsoft BBs or 200 to 250 FPS with 0.20g airsoft BBs.
AEG Pistol Quality and Performance
AEG handgun quality has increased considerably recently. The early gens were a bit questionable and unreliable, but the latest versions have the problems resolved and make reliable airsoft secondary weapons. They can be further upgraded with increased magazine capacities and by accommodating bigger batteries.
A significant perk of using an AEG pistol is that you have the capacity to rewire the battery connectors to use an increased capacity battery. Based on the AEG handgun type, you may be able to get a big leap in performance by using a two cell Lipo battery (like an 2S Lipo) in place of the stock battery. Be careful when changing the elements and wires since you must think about the volts, mAh, and loads of the batteries. If you have customization concerns, ask an experienced weapon service technician at your closest airsoft store or shop.
What Airsoft Sidearm is Right for Me?
If you have over $100 to spend on your airsoft pistol, evaluate a GBB handgun or AEG pistol. If you have in-between fifty to one-hundred dollars to shell out, evaluate a CO2 handgun or cheaper GBB pistol. If your gun budget is lower, you can still get a long lasting airsoft pistol to use for the handgun games by checking out lower end pistols and by shopping the used gun market.
