Airsoft Handgun Type Details
Learn about airsoft handguns and sidearms and how you can use them as backup guns or as primary weapons on the airsoft playing field. Lots of airsoft handguns are completely accredited variations of their actual pistol equivalents and operate and look in the exact same ways while shooting airsoft BBs rather than actual bullets.
There are a variety of airsoft sidearms including CO2, green gas or propane (blowback and non-blowback), spring powered, and AEG automatic electric gun handguns. Each of these varieties of sidearms has negatives and positives related to them. Learning more about the types of airsoft sidearms helps you choose which type is right for you and your airsoft gameplay style.
Details About CO2 Airsoft Pistols
CO2 airsoft sidearms are one of the most resilient and standard types of pistols. They are all weather pistols and operate well in lots of types of weather, temperatures, and environments. These handguns use high pressure CO2 gas to send airsoft BBs out of the gun barrel. The CO2 cartridge is typically located in the handgun’s handle.
These kinds of airsoft weapons are very good for playing airsoft in cold weather conditions considering that the pressurized CO2 gas is stored in the sealed cylinders and less susceptible to performance decreases by temperature. This offers good FPS and shot consistency while playing airsoft in the winter season for instance where other styles of airsoft pistols like green gas stuffer from low performance or hardly fire airsoft BBs.
Information About CO2 Gas and CO2 Cartridges
CO2 airsoft guns are powered by regular 12 gram CO2 cartridges. These cartridges look like a chrome metal cylinder and store high pressure CO2 gas consisting of one carbon atom and a couple of oxygen atoms, as a result the molecular formula of “C + O2 “. These atoms are connected in the following order “O= C =O”. The gas is kept in the 12 gram cylinders under extremely high pressure of approximately ~ 800psi that translates to 55bar.
The CO2 cartridges cannot be used multiple times and you can usually purchase them in bundles of 12, 20, 50, or 100 12 gram CO2 cartridges. They come sealed to retain the CO2 gas safely and securely inside, once they are opened (firing them in an airsoft pistol breaks the seal) the cartridges will begin to lose pressure if they are left unused. You should try to run through the entire CO2 cartridge the very same day you open the seal. If the airsoft games end and you still have CO2 gas leftover, use the opportunity to do some handgun accuracy and target practice and use up the rest of the additional gas. There is no gas level sign on the cartridge so you need to shoot up until the pistol stops shooting airsoft BBs.
If they are kept sealed, CO2 cartridges have a long storage life. They are made with a supplier’s best used by date usually printed on the package or cartridge, but they will probably survive for a very long period past this date if the cartridge seal is not tampered with.
Green Gas Airsoft Handguns
Green gas airsoft handguns are similar to CO2 pistols, but they use propane gas instead of CO2 cartridges. The operational impact on the battlefield and green gas weapon efficiency is virtually the exact same as CO2 handguns with the weapons shooting up to 300+ FPS.
The green gas is stored in the pistol’s grip within the magazine which can typically hold roughly 15 to 20+ airsoft BBs based on the handgun style. A series of valves, silicone gaskets, and seals keep the propane gas pressurized in the pistol magazine prior to when the pistol’s trigger is squeezed. It is a good habit to top off and refill the green gas supply in your pistol mag each time you reload it. Pistol-wielding gamers can even bring supplemental bottles of propane in the field for refilling magazines in-between lulls in the battle or in-between missions.
When carrying a green gas sidearm on the airsoft field as a secondary or primary gun, additional mags are recommended for quickly reloading. Having extra magazines on-hand allows you to join in the action throughout firefights or while sweeping structures in CQB (close quarters combat) room-to-room battles.
Green gas pistols are suitable for CQB at airsoft fields because long guns and full-sized AEGs are normally not allowed to be used for indoor gameplay. This is an essential safety regulation due to the close range distance of airsoft players during the shooting engagements and the potential for players to be injured. While green gas handguns still shoot airsoft BBs at around 300 FPS, the short pistol barrel helps to keep the joules and energy propelling the BB at a lower level compared to AEGs, airsoft rifles, sniper rifles, and other long guns.
Thinking About Green Gas Blowback (GBB) VS Green Gas Non-blowback
There are 2 various types of green gas airsoft pistols. To start with there are green gas blowback handguns or GBBs. These handguns operate like a real handgun with the pistol slide “blowing back” with every shot. When a fresh airsoft BB is chambered, the gas causes the slide to cycle. The result is very cool, however the GBB weapons often cost more and likely have more parts to break. The green gas non-blowback airsoft guns have a stationary slide which does not cycle. The non-blowback weapons commonly cost less than GBBs. Performance is around the same when comparing the two styles of green gas pistols.
About GBB and Green Gas Limitations
Since the green gas or propane is housed in the pistol mag by using rubber seals, o-rings, and gaskets, cold temperatures can negatively influence these gaskets and allow the stored gas to leak out prior to shooting. This lack of pressure can cause the airsoft BBs to only shoot a number of feet (like 10 feet in cold weather ) when the pistol would usually shoot airsoft BBs over 100+ foot distances in warmer weather conditions).
One strategy to this issue is to make the GBB handgun magazines warmer by holding them next to your body before game play. If you absolutely desire to play with a reputable airsoft handgun in the cold, it may also be worth getting a CO2 style of your favorite handgun.
Spring Airsoft Handguns
Spring airsoft pistols are powered by strong springs that fire the BBs down the gun barrel. They are normally only able to shoot one BB. The manual action of reloading, shooting, and cocking spring guns makes the fire rate much slower than CO2 and GBB pistols. This makes spring airsoft guns entertaining to use, however they are less useful when dueling foes on the airsoft field with advanced guns like automatic airsoft AEG rifles, SMGs, sniper rifles, and CO2 or GBB airsoft handguns.
Spring pistols perform the best in springer battles where players can solely use comparable, single shot spring handguns or as a transition weapon for CQB buildings and MOUT sites when you can frequently quietly sneak up on other airsoft participants to get a guaranteed one-shot-one-kill. In the latter circumstance, a quick second followup shot will not be really needed considering that the other opponent is already hit by the airsoft BB and out of the game play or headed back to respawn. Look out when fighting many different foes given that the spring airsoft gun only fires as quickly as you can re-chamber an airsoft BB manually.
About Spring Pistol Performance
Spring pistols are remarkably useful under the right game conditions. Their FPS generally chronos at around 250 FPS to 300 FPS with lighter weight 0.12g airsoft BBs. These pistols usually fire lighter weight airsoft BBs because the pitched springs are less powerful than other styles of airsoft guns like rifles. Spring handguns can generally shoot up to 120 feet or more with 0.12 gram BBs but the ability to engage targets decreases quickly. Using basic 0.20g weight airsoft BBs, you will probably have a shooting distance of around 60 to 80 feet or less with heightened accuracy.
AEG Automatic Electric Airsoft Sidearm Information
AEG airsoft pistols or AEPs (automatic electric pistols) are also an option to bring into the field as a secondary weapon on the airsoft field. These automatic electric pistols are typically powered by mini stick batteries in the gun’s butt. They work just like an AEG SMG and use pressurized air with electrically cycled pistons, gearboxes, and cylinders to fire airsoft BBs out of the barrel and very rapidly at that.
AEG handgun magazines usually can carry around 20 to 30 airsoft BBs. The pistols can fire airsoft BBs right up to around 300 FPS using 0.12 gram airsoft BBs or around 200 to 250 FPS when loaded with 0.20 gram airsoft BBs. The electric battery powered gearbox system can shoot around 700+ BBs per minute which depends on if you have enough spare mags to reload (after every 20 to 30 rounds) and the battery maintains its charge that long. These AEP handguns can effectively shoot airsoft BBs at around 150 foot distances.
AEG Pistol Quality and Efficiency
AEG handgun quality has increased considerably over the last few years. The first generation AEP guns were a little bit questionable and unreliable, but the newer versions have most of the issues worked out and make efficient airsoft secondary weapons. They can be modded with enhanced mag storage capacities along with accommodating bigger batteries.
A large advantage of using an AEG pistol is that you have the power to rewire the connectors to use a larger battery. Depending on the AEG handgun style, you can get a sizable output in efficiency by adopting a two cell Lipo battery (2S Lipo) as an alternative for the stock battery.
What Airsoft Handgun is Right for Me to Play with?
Finding the ideal airsoft sidearm for you depends on your budget, how much you wish to play airsoft using it, and where you hope to play. If you have more than $100 to invest in your airsoft handgun, look into a green gas pistol or AEG handgun. These guns are usually the top-tier guns, have good performance, and are usually a good gun to invest in. If you have in-between more than fifty but less than one-hundred dollars to spend, have a look at a CO2 pistol or less expensive green gas blowback handgun. Mid-tier guns like these will still function well and will be pretty resilient sidearms. If you have less than $50, look for a cheap CO2 or springer handgun. You can still get a tough airsoft pistol to use for the pistol games.
