Information About Airsoft Pistol Varieties
Learn about airsoft sidearms and how you can use them as backup weapons or as main weapons on the airsoft playing field. Practicing your shot accuracy and getting the best pistol can be a game changer in the accuracy of your shots. Handguns, naturally, are reduced range airsoft weapons. They are commonly developed after real world pistols or models of authentic pistols. Many different airsoft pistols are fully licensed adaptations of their real handgun counterparts. These airsoft guns can function (sans shooting bullets) in the same ways and look similarly to the real guns they are modeled after while shooting airsoft BBs instead of real world bullets.
There are a variety of airsoft handguns such as CO2, green gas (blowback and non-blowback), spring powered, and AEG automatic electric handguns. Each of these types of pistols have negatives and positives connected with them. Finding out about the styles of airsoft pistols helps you decide which type is right for you and your airsoft gameplay style.
About CO2 Airsoft Pistols
CO2 airsoft pistols are among the most typical and sturdy types of handguns. They are all weather handguns and operate well in a lot of types of extreme temperatures, weather and environments. These handguns use pressurized CO2 gas to propel airsoft BBs down the gun barrel. The CO2 cartridge stores the gas within the cylinder and is usually stored in the gun’s magazine in the handle.
These forms of airsoft weapons are good for playing airsoft in cooler temperatures considering that the compressed CO2 gas is stored in the sealed cylinders and less vulnerable to performance decreases with low temperature. This gives CO2 airsoft sidearms good FPS and shot consistency while playing airsoft in the winter months for example where other types of sidearms like green gas cease to work or hardly shoot BBs.
About CO2 Gas and CO2 Cylinders
CO2 airsoft handguns are powered by typical 12 gram CO2 cylinders. These cartridges resemble a chrome metal cylinder and contain high-pressure CO2 gas consisting of just one carbon atom and a couple of oxygen atoms, as a result the molecular formula is “C + O2 “. These atoms are connected in the following alignment “O= C =O”. The gas is stored in the 12 gram cartridges under very high pressure of near ~ 800psi which correlates to 55bar.
They come sealed to keep the CO2 gas safely inside, but the moment they are opened (shooting them in an airsoft pistol breaks the seal) they will begin to lose pressure if they are left unused. If the airsoft matches end and you still have CO2 gas left, use the chance to do some pistol target practice and use up the rest of the extra gas.
CO2 cartridges can be stored for a longtime if the cylinders are stored sealed. They do have the maker’s expiry date usually noted on the box or cartridge cylinder, however, they will maintain pressure for a very long period past this date if the cartridge seals are not broken.
Green Gas Airsoft Handguns
Green gas airsoft pistols are comparable to CO2 pistols, however they use propane gas instead of CO2 cartridges. The result on the battlefield and green gas weapon efficiency is practically the very same as CO2 pistols with the guns at around 300+ FPS.
The propane gas is stashed in the handgun’s airsoft magazine which can commonly hold around 15 to 20+ BBs based on the pistol design. A series of valves, rubberized gaskets, and seals keep the gas pressurized in the mag until the handgun’s trigger is squeezed.
When playing with a green gas pistol on the airsoft field or arena as a secondary or primary gun, additional mags are highly recommended for rapidly reloading and engaging opponents. Having additional magazines on-hand helps you re-engage in the action in the middle of firefights or while sweeping structures in CQB (close quarters combat) room-to-room fighting.
Green gas handguns are great for CQB at airsoft fields because long guns and full-sized AEGs are normally not permitted to be used during indoor game play. This is an essential safety guideline due to the close quarters proximity of gamers during shooting engagements and the potential for players to be hurt. While green gas pistols can still shoot airsoft BBs at about 300 FPS, the shorter pistol barrel helps to keep the joules and energy launching the BB lower compared to AEGs, sniper rifles, and other long guns.
Thinking About Green Gas Blowback (GBB) VS Green Gas Non-blowback
There are 2 different kinds of green gas airsoft handguns. There are green gas blowback pistols or GBBs where the slide moves and non-blowback pistols. The green gas non-blowback airsoft handguns have a stationary slide which does not move.
About GBB and Green Gas Issues
Because the green gas or propane is kept in the pistol mag using rubber seals and gaskets, cold weather can negatively affect these gaskets and cause the stored gas to escape prior to shooting the pistol. The decrease in pressure can cause the airsoft BBs to simply shoot a number of feet (like 10 feet in cold temps ) when the handgun would usually shoot airsoft BBs over 100+ feet in warmer weather).
One fix for this issue is to make the GBB handgun mags warmer by placing them next to a heater or by your body just before the game play. This can help to heat up the rubber gaskets and better seal in the green gas. If you definitely want to have fun with a reliable airsoft pistol in the cold, it might also be better to get a CO2 variation of your favorite handgun. The CO2 cartridges come sealed and perform far better in sub-freezing temps and while playing in the snow.
Facts About Spring Airsoft Pistols
Spring airsoft pistols are powered by strong coil springs that shoot the BBs out of the handgun barrel. The manual action of reloading, cocking, and firing spring handguns makes the fire rate much slower than CO2 and GBB pistols.
Spring pistols perform the best in springer battles where players can solely use comparable, single shot spring pistols or as an alternative weapon for CQB buildings and MOUT sites when you can often sneak up to other airsoft participants to get an assured one-shot-one-kill. In the latter scenario, a quick 2nd followup shot will not be required due to the fact that the other opponent is already struck and out of the game or moving back to respawn. When engaging a number of attackers because the weapon simply shoots as fast as you can re-chamber an airsoft BB by hand, be careful.
About Spring Pistol Efficiency
Spring pistols are remarkably useful under the proper conditions during airsoft games. Spring handguns can typically shoot up to 120 feet or farther with 0.12 gram BBs but accuracy decreases quickly.
Details About AEG Automatic Electric Airsoft Handguns
AEG airsoft handguns or AEPs (automatic electric pistols) are also an option to carry as a backup gun on the airsoft field. These automatic electric handguns are normally powered by mini stick batteries in the weapon’s butt. They function much like an AEG rifle and use pressured air pumped through electrically cycled gearboxes, pistons, and cylinders to propel airsoft BBs out of the barrel and very quickly at that.
AEG pistol mags usually hold about 20 to 30 airsoft BBs. The pistols can shoot airsoft BBs up to around 300 FPS using 0.12 gram airsoft BBs or 200 to 250 FPS using 0.20g airsoft BBs.
AEG Handgun Quality and Performance
AEG pistol quality has risen significantly in the last few years. The earliest gen guns were a bit undependable and questionable, however the newer designs have the issues resolved and make effective airsoft secondary guns. They can be upgraded with increased magazine storage capacities along with accommodating more powerful batteries.
A massive benefit of using an AEG pistol is that you have the capability to rewire the adapters to use a larger battery. Depending on the AEG handgun model, you can gain a sizable increase in functionality by taking advantage of a 2 cell Lipo battery (like an 2S Lipo) instead of the stock AEP battery.
Which Airsoft Handgun is Best for Me to Buy?
If you have over $100 to spend on your airsoft handgun, check out a GBB pistol or automatic electric pistol. If you have around $50 to $100 to invest, review a CO2 handgun or less expensive GBB handgun. If your gun budget is lower, you can still choose a long lasting airsoft pistol to use for the pistol games by checking out lower end pistols and by shopping the used gun market.
